Hey all,
I'm looking into a gym membership and for my family at the YMCA near us, it's $95/mo for full use of everything. That seems really expensive to me - especially for the Y. Anyone else think this is high or am I the one that is high?

Cooooooooool colors man!

Its better than if you are single.  I pay $50 a month for one person.  They usually have child care included so you can drop the kids in the daycare while you workout.  My friends with kids say they can't beat it.  they have lots of classes ...and maybe a masters swim class for you too

Yeah... the Y membership includes lots of free classes e.g aerobics and yoga.  I pay $45 a month single membership.  You can't find anything thing else with a decent gym/weight room/pool.  Most $100/yr gym don't have a pool, and you've gotta pay extra for classes.

My Y costs 74/month and includes everything, including use of the other Y's around here. We have two within a about five mile area. It goes up a few bucks each year. They have pool, spinning, treadmills, ellipticals, weights, free weights, and endless stuff to keep my kids occupied while I work out. child care and kid rooms and teen rooms. They have exercise programs up the wazoo and group classes galore. Even a Seniors Group that meets several mornings for a low impact classes and socializing. I thought about ditching the family membership and making it just me since I was the only one using it, then my hubby got hurt and started swimming every day. when his PT is up, he will be in the weight room. and my kids have renewed their interest in going back. So it's worth it for us.

Seems reasonable for Y that is near a major metro area. I think the Y's here (in minneapolis) charges $85 a month for a couple's membership, plus some joining fee. Do you have to pay any joining fee? May be they have waived that for you. I remember Y's here ran a promotion this time last year.

It seems like a lot to pay but if it is for the whole family and you can enjoy all the facilities including the various classes offered then it is not bad. Take a look at your local university; sometimes they are much less expensive and offer the same, if not more, in the way of athletics.

I have a membership with Bally's.  I can use any club in the country, so it's great when I travel, and I can use all the classes/machines/whatever.  The best part...it's only $12 a month!!!

I've been with them for 3 years, so once I paid off the original like $1200 over thost 3 years it's $12/month for the rest of my life!

Sounds pretty standard for a family membership. Look at it this way, I'm paying $162/month for my (single) gym membership. Me thinks you have the better deal.

Something to consider: your Y membership is good at (almost) every Y in the US. (Ask if they participate in the AWAY program.

My Y membership is only $45 a month for just me.  I have access to all the equipment/facilities there and classes are free.  And...I can go to the other 2  locations in this area under that membership.

Not even sure to be honest.

I needed a gym memebership when I finished college so I went to Bally's.  I told the guy I needed a plan that would let me use any gym in the country because I travel a lot and he set me up.  It was originally like $1200 or $1500 financed over 3 years and then for the rest of my life it's just $12 a month.

I said it looked good but then I saw they were hitting me with like a 10% interest rate, so I said screw that and paid the whole balance off up front.  I didn't have a bill for 3 years and now I just pay the $12 a month.  I love it!

The City wide Y membership here is $45 for an individual and $61 for family.

I wish I could only pay for use of the pool and locker room because thats all I ever use. Especially now that I don't have any tris lined up for a long while.. i haven't even been in over a month.. (DOH)

I joined 24 hour fitness for like $900 upfront for the first 3 years, and then it'll be $49/year every year thereafter. The initial fee was a bit of a stretch, but now it's paid off and the once a year thing won't be bad when I have to pay that. It includes any of the facilities all over the country. Basically, it gives me the option of going to the one that's either closer to my work or my house, depending on what I need that day.

It has a pool and classes, and that's included in the general fee. Childcare isn't included, but if I ever do have kids it'll just be a small fee.

I work out at the university Rec Center and I pay just under $300/year, plus $35/semester for yoga classes, $10/semester for the use of the pools and probably some other stuff. I also pay about $100/month to a local yoga studio. Except for the yoga studio bit, which most people aren't interested in and really IS a luxury, it looks like I'm getting a good deal. And the yoga studio prices aren't out of line at all... just possibly an unusal expense for a triathlete.

(NOTE: I am employed by the YMCA)

I have a free membership because I work there. We also have free classes for members. Every single one is free. In addition, being a member gets you discounts on things like swim lessons and race entries (for events that we run). Plus, we have staff nutritionists who will set you up on a food plan for FREE, plus you get FitLinx computer tracking for free as well. But I think the big attraction of the Y for me is that the people there are always very grounded and more interested in working out than picking people up. The people that come to my Y aren't gorgeous and just prancing around trying to work out...they're ACTUALLY WORKING OUT. There's no way my 180+ self would feel comfy going into Bally's, especially after I interviewed there...blech.

Well, after discussions with my wife, I'm gonna sign up just for me. It's $56 a month for a single adult. The nice thing about the family plan is the free baby sitting - which is the bomb, but at $3/hr otherwise, I'm not sure I'll use the babysitting enough to justify the additional expense. Plus, my wife has a nice gym at her work so she probably won't be going to the Y.

Thanks for the thoughts all.
