Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Under mouthing public opinion, Mayor Bloomberg just cancelled the race. I applaud the decision: people who went to hotels for heat and power were asked to leave to make way for marathon participants and fans. If even one poise, fire or ambulance crew are distracted from rescue for the race to be held, it's one too many. I'd be hugely disappointed, but it's the right move. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What an absolute clusterfudge of a decision to not cancel the race until now. It should have been canceled on Monday to begin with, and in some ways this just makes it worse, especially for anyone who may have been coming from out of town. NYC has much bigger and more pressing issues to deal with right now besides hosting a race. |

Most NYC marathoner's come in from out of state...many probably left this morning to find out that the race is cancelled. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If you or people you know are in NYC for the marathon, some local runners and triathletes are trying to organize marathon runners to help the relief effort. If you're here and you'd like to help, look them up or please direct your friends to their site. NYC Marathon of Relief--NYC MORE2012. [email protected] Nycmore2012.com Or look them up on Facebook. Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Will there be a refund to the competitors? Just wondering. Or do they just let the entries float till next year (no pun intended). |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Waiting until late on Friday to make the correct decision is crazy. Now you have a lot of marathoners in town on top of all the issues from the storm. I was very surprised when they didn't cancel it on Tuesday. The damage was evident and the resources need to be deployed to help people recover from the storm, not to help Marshall a race. Unbelievably bad decision to wait to cancel. |

THIS is exactly what should have been organized mid-week for anyone who still wanted to come in. I feel badly for those that trained, lost airfare, hotels etc but in the grand scheme of things go talk to my neighbor around the corner who is on day 6 now of now power and is looking at probably 10 more days without it. All the food in the fridge/freezer - gone (most thrown out not eaten) NO HEAT and it's getting colder and another storm possibly mid-week. Not everyone can afford a generator (or now fuel which is being rationed as it was in the 70's in NJ). It was absolutely the right decision. I can't get to NY to help, but have opened my doors to neighbors and friends to warm up, charge things and now do laundry as we were fortunate enough to get our power back. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i am sitting on my couch watching highlights from last night's knicks game at MSG and making plans to watch tomorrow's steelers game at NY Giants wondering why we are not all pissed off that these sporting events are carrying on in the face of hurricane recovery, resource needs, lack of power, etc. |

The marathon would have used 8000 bottles of water when blocks away, people have none. The generator for the finish line clock could power 7 average homes. It's beyond indulgent to hold the marathon in light of that. The arena events don't need nearly the resource that the marathon would. Oh, and to add misery to New Jersey; the Steelers will beat the Giants soundly! Edited by pitt83 2012-11-03 8:23 AM |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just an update: there are no fewer than four groups made up of marathon runners as well as local runners and triathletes who are out in the varies communities helping with recovery. Yesterday, there was a caravan of bike trailers carrying supplied that went over into Staten Island. This morning, a group of 200 triathletes and runners rode and ran from Prospect Park to Coney Island carrying food and supplies. There have also been a bunch of hastily-planned charity fun-runs of various distances with all of the proceeds going to the Red Cross and other agencies. It's been really cool to see the running and Multisport community respond to this crisis. |

Staten Island ferry packed to the gills with runners heading over to help. Someone should forward those pics to Congress so they would learn something about how people are supposed to act in times of crisis. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I realize that missing a guaranteed entry to '13 is not a big deal relative to what the folks in NY and NJ are dealing with. Hope they extend my guarantee to '14. |
