Subject: Team in Training?
Anyone have any experiences with a Team in Training, especially the fundraising involved?  I was looking into it as a way to get involved with a running group and train for a Marathon.

I am a little skeptical because I am a terrible rundraiser and I have heard that this requires quite a bit.

It always looks like a fun group and you get a lot of support.  However, I do think you have to raise a pretty large sum of money.

I love Team in Training! It was one of the best experience's of my life, and made some of my best friends during my training. The fund raising is tough, but there is a good team of people to help.

Great charity.  I know they're very active in training people.  They have several group workouts.  Here's three observations:

1) They do require a lot of funds raised. ($3000 for entry at some events)

2) The majority of the people training seem to be MOP/BOPers.  Which would be perfect for me, but if you're a stud, you might want a faster club.

3) They're really annoying at events because they only cheer for each other "go teeeeeeam...yay teeeeeam..."
Someone pointed that out to me prior to the Marine Corps Marathon and as I ran the race, it got more and more annoying that the TinT runners or supporters weren't lending any support to runners not wearing purple.  I on the other hand ran for Team Semper Fi and even the amputees were running-along cheering for other runners when they started fading.

4) If you don't have a club to work-out with, they seem to be pretty darn good...

Glad I'm not the only one that thought this at the last race I was at...

It REALLY depends on the chapter of TNT on how your experience turns out.  Some chapters have great coaches and great staff.  Other chapters are fighting to get participants and don't provide a decent coaching or support base for the team.

Typically  halfway through the "season", you can determine whether you will be able to raise all of the funds and you are able to back out with no accountability attached.  If you sign on to raise those remaining funds, you are bound to that agreement.

If you have more specific questions, feel free to PM me.

Really don't want to threadjack but this is a funny TinT story.  A friend of mine ran Longhorn (you were probably there) and she was so aggravated by them cheering only for each other that the day after, she sent a letter to the local chapter.  She received about 8 TinT post cards per week for the rest of the year... I guess they were trying to tell her "You can't beat-us, join us!"

Again, it's for a great cause in the end.  But I wonder what their overhead/direct benefit ratio is with all the direct advertising.  Team Semper Fi is 98.5% to help wounded vets.

I LOVED Team in Training. I did the Women's Nike marathon with them in 2007. I agree with the other posters. hearing "Go Team" a million times was annoying. Last marathon there was a TNT gy handing out red vines, I tried to take one, and he said it was only for TNT people.

There are many long threads here on TnT, their cheering habits, fundrasing efforts, and overall training.  They tend to turn into very long posts, might be a good idea to search for those posts rather than bring it up again.

x2.

Search the forums, and you'll find a several threads with a variety of opinions re: TNT.

My opinion is a little biased, because my mother is a lymphoma survivor, and the stem cell transplant that saved her life was the result of research partially funded by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  This is my second year of racing with them, and I've done 3 events so far with 1 more race in August.  I am also a mentor with them this year.

Feel free to PM me, and I'll be glad to share both the pros and cons of the program and organization.

That wasn't my experience at MCM with TnT at all last year!  I was running awhile with another TnT runner and we were towards the back.  The coach did come back mainly for her, but was talking to me and being encouraging as well.  He was doing it for a lot of the runners just before the bridge cutoff.

I can't imagine how this should be held against TnT.  Would you expect your family/friends/supporters who might be prepared to hand you a treat on the course to have enough to hand out to any athlete who wanted one?  I just don't see how TnT should be expected to provide for everyone.

Excuse the ignorance...What are MOP/BOPers?

eh, it bugged me....We're all struggling on the course regardless if we are with TNT or not.... I loved being with TNT overall though. I think TNT should encourage EVERYONE out on the course. I liked that there were a few TNT coaches that would find us out there a run us into the finish line, that was sweet. I really did get tired of hearing "Go Team" though......

Certainly I can agree with the idea that they should encourage everyone but providing support with things that cost money (Red vines do cost and would be significant if provided for any racer who wanted one) is something different.

Just finished the Philly Triathalon with the Southern Ohio Chapter. Being a Lymphoma survivor, without a doubt I loved the cause but never would have excpected the coaching I recieved. They even told us about the perceptions and purple menace banter and running the race, I could see were people could get the perception honestly. We, did very well and had 3 of the 6 of us finished in the top 25 of our age group and were very, very prepared by our coaches, on everything and we even got etiquette beat into us. Some Chapters have cheerleaders, and some chapters like ours we had Drill Sergeants for coaches. Bar None Best Expierance of my LIFE, and it is a great, great charity. They helped me so much with my battle.

I had a similar experience at a half marathon last year. After crossing the finish line I aksed one of the race volunteers for water and was told they'd run out of cups. I walked a few more feet and saw a huge Team in Training table covered with cups of water and asked if I could have one. They said the water was only for TNT runners. I told them that the race organizers were out of cups and the TNT guy just said sorry, too bad. I get that it wasn't their fault that the official folks ran out of cups, and in general I'm fine with them giving their stuff only to TNT participants, but a cup of water? Really? (I ended up grabbing one anyway when no one was looking. I was thirsty!)

That's been my only negative experience, though. In general I've found TNT folks to be very fun and cheerful and supportive of everyone.
