So, the swim speed thread got me thinking about everyone's swimming background. How it's difficult to compare people from competitive and non-competitive backgrounds.

Where do you fit in on the poll?

For me, I learnt to swim as a kid, did the distance badges ect, but never swam competitively. Started swimming again when I was 31, 3 years ago.

Let's take the 1500m distance as a middle ground. What's your average pace per 100 meters (not yards!) for an Olympic?

I'll go first. Around 1:35 per 100m for me.

Can hold low 1.30's

Played a bit of waterpolo but had a 4-5 year break from any swimming then got into triathlon. Swim 3x per week 1.5 hours each.

I was around 1:48-1:50 in my last race, but am much slower in the pool (more like 2:30)... my form definitely needs work, so I like when there's a good OW current to help me out.

Hey- I'm not in DFL category in this poll!!
Although I get discouraged sometimes, I try to keep in mind that I have minimal swim background & could barely do 50 last Dec.  Now I can do over 1mi straight, although slowly.

Seeing as how a good deal of people probably swim in 25 yard pools not meter pools it is going to be tough to figure out and will probably also skew a lot of numbers, especially as noted in the other thread as most people don't realize.

Closest I have right now to compare I did just a T20 swim and ended up doing 52 laps, was just going fairly easy and this was about 6 weeks back in the pool after 10 years. This was in a 25 yard pool so only ~1200 meters covered but that comes out to about a 1:40.

I'll do a 1650yards next week though at a good pace and see where I am.

Voting 135-140 was competitive for now since that is where it seems I sit. I'd probably be 1:20 range with another month in the pool and if I tried or was in a competition.

At my last race I did an Olympic relay. It was a 1640 yard swim and I did it in 20:09 for a 1:14 pace. I swam for 4 years on a club team in high school.

1640 yards is exactly 1500m so about a 1:20 pace in meters, not bad.

I was always a "good" swimmer growing up, but never swam for time until my junior year of high school...and only ended up being a decent overall utility guy on the high school swim team (could stick me in any race or relay and I could at least compete/help the relay team).  Swam the 200 IM in sectionals but didn't come close to qualifying for State.

W/ that said, I hit the beach during an Olympic 2 weeks ago at 31 minutes (was not winded)...I was pretty happy w/ that.

I'm so glad to have received good training/instruction in high school b/c technique is king when it comes to swimming...

Just take your 100yard time in seconds and multiply by 1.1

1:05-1:10 Pace for 1500 meters.  But that's pretty much OWS with a wetsuit.  In the pool maybe a little faster but not much.

Are you asking race pace, or staright swim pace (i.e. workout)?

Other variables to consider:
Wetsuit or not
Pool or OW race (OW races are notoriously inaccuarate...I've had "1500" that ranged from closer to 1000 (YAY! I'm FAST!) to 2000.

Etc etc...

Well, this year I was 1:26/100 for my only oly.  But that was "current assisted".  I am in the 1:35-1:40 range otherwise.  No swim training/racing until age 35.

I learned to swim as a youth (swim lessons and life guard training) but did not swim competitively.  In August '04, I got back into the pool to attempt to remember how to swim at the age of 28.

My best 1500m is 22:26 and my goal for this off season is to knock that down into the 21' range.

i started swimming in January, never competed or even swam with any intent before that. my fastest Oly time is 19:56, i am usually in the 21-23 mins area with a wetsuit for an OWS, last night i did a 1500 in 23:45 with no wetsuit OWS.

Unfortunately, OWS vs pool vs OWS w/wetsuit vs Pool with flip turns vs OWS with Current will all vary greatly in time

but i love threads like these

Swam competitively as a kid... from 14-18 years of age. Kept up with it off and on after High School as well.

I keep a solid 1:40 per 100 METERS... no matter the distance. One speed. That's me!

I can keep the speed for up to 3 miles open water.

I swam competitively as a kid, and I go between 1:30-1:40 for an Olympic. Mostly because I can swim once a week and do that. I quit because of burnout, it's hard for me to get in the pool more than once or twice a week.

I still need to get a waterproof case for the nano, maybe tunes will help.

I'm assuming this is for ows? I'm probably around 1:35 in the pool, but closer to 1:50 ows in a race (I've only done four ows, including practice swims, and at the moment I like coming out of the water with my HR nice and low). I was a sprinter in high school though...

Curious, but does the wetsuit really help your time much?  I've read about the increased bouyancy but I didn't know if that really translated to speed.  I swim in bulky trunks.
