Subject: Phoenix swim Coach
Looking for a good coach for my girlfriend and I, anybody know of anybody great. We live in Glendale but are willing to drive. I think there is a big differences in coaches. We worked with one guy who didn't help us much, then another guy at the gym worked with us for free for about 15 minutes and helped us so much in just those 15 minutes. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the time to coach. We are middle pack swimmers 35 - 40 min 1/2 im pace. I was thinking of contacting some local high school coaches and asking them. We have memberships to LA fitness.
We would be willing to pay around that $35- $60 /hour range if they are worth it.
Thanks for your help

I found one guy who I was told was very good I never was able to make it but one day (when I care about swimming again) I plan on using him. His name is Warren Miller (yeah like the ski guy) I cannot remember his rate but I think it was $60 and he will travel to meet you at a convenient pool. For what its worth LA Fitness does not allow coaching to take place on their property unless it is with one of their coaches.

I did not know that LA Fit even had swimming coaches.  Are you sure you are not refereing to those sales guys pretending to be trainers that sell you a $1200 pre-designed plan that they just put your weight and name on?  If they do have swim coaches, how do you know who they are?  Thought I would ask as you are in the know!

She's just saying that unless you specifically work for LA Fitness, you can't coach there or have someone from outside LA Fitness come in to coach on their premesis.

She's telling him that, because he belongs to LA Fitness and wants to find a coach. (We're assuming he wants the coach to come in to LA Fitness to coach him and it would not be allowed).

I caught that and was also looking at needing a coach (as you know ) and belong to LA Fit.  Therefore, in of my greedy way, I was hoping for the same info!.

I don't think LA fitness has swim coaches. If they can't provide one I would assume I can bring my own. A while back I seen a guy that was not a LA member coaching a lady. I would bet none of those La Fitness trainers are certified swim coaches.

Are you looking for one-on-one coaching?  I would think that a Masters' swim program might work for you.  I'm not sure in Glendale has a Masters, but I know Brophy has a Master's group (ages 25 - 92) and there are a few more in Tempe and Scottsdale.

It is their policy to not allow this to take place. If you can do it discreetly I am sure you would get away with it. But if you ask about it they will tell you about their "policy." I had hoped to have Warren train me at LA Fitness. If the coach is a member I doubt they could enforce this at all.

No, they do not have swim coaches persay (I was saying it as Chris explained). However since it is their property any outside training is not allowed. They will tell you that your "cardio" can consist of swimming in which one of their *cough* trainers will *cough* coach you. *rolleyes*

As silly as this may seem, even though I live in Tucson, I use a couch in your neck of the woods.  I don't know how far you are from Scottsdale but I have had an EXCEPTIONAL experience with Camelback Coaching.

http://www.camelbackcoaching.com/

Bill and Anne are the coaches and Anne does a great job with the swimming.  I know several folks who come up from Tucson for them.   I found it a great investment.  It has helped me focus my time and energy much better...

Good Luck, Emerson from Catalina (Tucson)

Yikes! $200/month is pricey. What exactly are you getting for that kind of money?

My cost is $150 a month but I get a custom training plan, access to an excellent coach, threshold testing, etc.  When I added up how much time and money I put into this sport.  The cost of a good coach to be effective, reduce injury and enjoy it more has been money well spent.  The annual expense is about what I will spend to do the Big Sur marathon.  And I did seven other races in the last year better with the coaching...

What can I say, I value the time and effort I put into my training.  I read a bunch of books but it was not as good as a coach.  I am a very satisfied customer...

I don't know if he still does individual coaching, but Chris Aikman is a great coach.  He taught me how to swim, and I learned as an adult.  He also coached a friend of mine who also did not know how to swim and now she is a 2x ironman.

He is at Arrowhead Country Club.

What a small world! I just spoke with David Tait about Rio's youth swim team looking for information on getting into competitive swimming for our 12 year old son.  How interesting he also coaches adults.

I had a great experience with Bethany from Swimotion. She is based in North West Glendale, 75th Ave near Deer Valley.  She did a underwater video analysis, and it was a ton of help. She's easy to talk to and really interesting.

Here is her info.

OH and John (tkdteacher} coaches. He is on these boards and I know some people have used him (heh heh). Not sure his rates or where he coaches (a few locations) but I am sure he, or one of his users can jump in here.

I second that.  Chris is the best.  Patient, a great triathlete and a great coach!

Chris is great.  If you are looking for a group setting he is coaching the Sun Devil Maters at Cactus Pool Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at Cactus Pool in Scottsdale at noon.  If nothing else give him a shot to see if you like him in the group setting.

FYI -- Chris Aikman also runs a Masters Team at Arrowhead Country Club -- Mon - Fri. 6AM, Mon - Thu 6PM.  He also does one on one coaching and lessons.

He is patient, knows what he's doing, and he is a triathlete, so he knows the challenges we face and how to coach you specifically for the distance race you are targeting.
