Subject: Where do you guys get hill training in?

I'm potentially going to have to move my Sat  hilly ride with my group to SUnday. Keywords here: group ride and hilly.

I'm a newbie so I'm intimidated by riding on the rode. Only had my bike 1.5 months - but I do know what I'm doing and I'm fairly confident. And my sat ride is on roads - albeit country roads and I never get dropped (avg. 15mph)

So where can I ride that's hilly so I can get my hill training in?

(I've been fortunate to be able to start a legitimate side business and it's starting to flourish and I need my sat to meet with my clients. So I'm making this my long run day and sunday my long ride)

oh. I'm in decatur.

I like to do my training at Stone mountain. There is two options: the 5 mile loop around the mountain and another slightly longer option (i think its like 7 miles or so). It's pretty hilly and there arent too man cars, plus on the back end they have a bike lane with traffic only going one way. I have attached a profile from my garmin (repeating the 5 mile loop)

I COMPLETLY forgot about stone mountain. Thanks!

To the Newnan guy - lucky. I work in Griffin.

I think I could do it out my driveway too, but I'm just not that confident yet. And there is one road I would be nervous about

I live in Gainesville which is right at the foothills of the mountains.  My Saturday ride last week was 100 miles with right at 5000 feet of climbing according the route tracker here on BT.

We are planning on doing the same ride this weekend if anyone would like to join us.  Great back country roads, and we even ride through downtown Helen, GA.....anyone care for Ocktoberfest?

Latrina - I'll come ride with you!  I ride Stone Mountain or Buckhead (during the week).  I am planning on heading out to Silk Sheets for a ride in a few weeks (there is a 20 mile loop and a 30 mile loop).  I generally avg. 15 mph on hills.   The best way to get comfortable on the road is to ride more, as long as you take precautions and ride with others.  Stone Mountain is nice because it's pretty safe and there are always lots of people around.

The Roswell route is pretty hilly, but it's no where near Decatur.

You might want to give riding from your house a try.   I ride sometimes on Sunday mornings at 8 and the roads are very quiet.  It's the best time to ease yourself into riding with the Atlanta drivers.  Oh, but whatch out for the blue hairs on their way to church!

Stone Mt is the closest to you, but it get's kind of boring circling it. If you get bored with that route, consider Roswell as Brown Dog mentioned above. It's in Roswell, so not a bad drive at all, especially on the weekend... and it's very hilly. Like Mt Everest kind of hilly.. as far as I remember.

Yup, and let's not forget Cartersville. The Bud Plant rides are plenty hilly for me 5000 feet of climbing is, ummmm, more like torture

The Gaps!

Fallsrunner beat me to it.

One trip up Hogpen and you will have a new definition of "hill".

The link below is a hilly ride I do once per week. It's not the gaps or Kennesaw, however, it has some decent hills in it. Most of the route is in neighborhoods so the traffic is not bad. You only have to watch out for the section on N Highland. The section on Dekalb/College ave follows the path so you don't actually have to ride on the roads. Also, McClendon AVE is rather tight, but, the drivers in that area tend to be bike friendly.

When people bring up hogpen, I always flinch.  Everybody should have to do that climb once.

I recommend doing some group rides with any local bike shops or groups to get used to riding on the road.  If you catch some in the Roswell or Gwinnett area you can get some good hills too.

Stone Mountain works really well for hill training.  Just take the outer loop.  The only downside is that it is only 7-8 miles long so you will need to ride it a number times.

 Good Luck

On my ride last week we went right by the start of hogpen.  We turned around and went about 100 feet up Richard Russell just so we could say we started "going up" hogpen but decided to turn around sometime thereafter!

You can also complement the Stone Mtn route with repeats up Silver Hill:

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2272595

It's a nice 2 min climb that's longer than anything in the park. Depending on time of day and day of week there is little to no traffic.

Enjoy!

I ride around Buckhead. there's really not much traffic but you will need to get comfortable with some cars or you'll be stuck more on Stone Mtn, which is fine, but I get bored easily.

www.sadlebred.com has routes.

Silk Sheets is a good option, rolling hills and very rural.
