So this guy at work will not stop nagging me about this new "opportunity".  He is selling juice that is $40 a bottle.  But he insists he is not really selling it and it is not juice.  It is a miracle energy drink and even though he sent me a link to his website to buy it, he is not really sellling it.  Then there is a guy that gets money if he makes money and he is trying to recruit people that he can make money from but it is not a pyramid scheme.  He is talking in circles.  I looked the company up on the Internet and found an article on Newsweek saying it is a MLM and, although legal, it is a MLM.  I told the guy straight up that this is not something I am interested in and he got all pissy with me and said I have to go to the "tasting party" and get the whole story.  I'm not going but I was wondering if anyone else has heard of this "opportunity" and have you heard of anyone who has made any honest money from it?  What's the scoop?

Sharkie - 2009-05-27 4:41 PM Noni??

Too funny - I just looked up Noni and it sounds a lot like the one this guy is trying to push on me.  His is Monavie.  Hilarious that they sound so similiar!  Sell miracle juice and become a millionaire from your home!  I mean no disrespect if anyone here is involved in this.

Run away. That's at least a couple hours of your time you'll never get back. Do some hill intervals instead. Better for ya.

eta: I am not speaking from product knowledge. I am just speaking from a deep mistrust of MLM schemes proposals.

LOL - actually I asked him if he drank the Kool-Aid because his whole personality has changed over the course of a couple of weeks.  He didn't think it was funny.

I am evil!  I just sent the guy a link to the Noni website and asked when he is available to attend a tasting party.  I doubt he will see the humor in that but I think it is hilarious!  Not very nice, huh?

Whenever anyone starts a conversation with, "I am not selling anything....", I am fairly convinced that eventually they will want to sell me something.

My apologies, in advance, of any mental or emotional damage caused by my WOT.

I am always wary of pyramid and MLM scams schemes.  While I've never been personally involved, I have known many people involved in selling products in this manner.  For instance, one of my uncles was a fairly successful Amway salesman.  He hosted the annual family Independence Day BBQ during my youth and, to my recollection, we were always in possession of a few gallons of one cleaning product or another when we left.  My father would complain the entire way home about how he can't see his brother-in-law unless he buys something.  I also remember the "sales pitch" where he'd try to get my parents and other aunts and uncles to start selling the products as well.

This experience made me skeptical of such marketing schemes.  When a friend or family member starts talking about this "great new product" that will "change your life" I automatically change the subject.  After looking into some of the products, I can say that they all have a few things in common.

They make claims about "fantastic new research" that turns out to be unsubstantiated.

The "opportunity" is usually buying and/or selling a product that preys upon fears about issues such as aging, nutrition, vanity, etc.

The "promise" is that you will not only benefit from said product but that you will be helping others all the while amassing a personal fortune.

The reality is that the only people profiting from these schemes are the people that produce the product. Sure, some Mary Kay reps drive around in Pink Cadillacs.  But, the effort to earn such a  prestigious priviledge is monsterous and the effort to retain the keys is nigh impossible (it's a co-op lease and falling below your required sales minimums during the 24-month term will result in loss of the lease).

I can think of one simple way to earn money that will actually benefit myself and those who I sell to that will provide a comfortable living without imposing on friends and relatives; hard work.

I applaud your skepticism and your reaction.  Burn him at the stake!

Thanks for all the feedback.  It reinforces what my initial reaction was to this.

The best comment from the guy yesterday was when he was insisting that he doesn't sell juice and then he told me that he buys the juice for $30 a bottle from himself (he gives himself a $10 discount).  I said, "So you do sell juice...to yourself!".  He didn't have a response.  I think I will have a little more fun with him before I get really irritated and just cut off communication entirely - unless he gets deprogrammed and leaves the juice cult.

I remember a company called"JewelWay" was based in Arizona I think. It made its way up here. One of my uncles did okay with it. He was a banker, had alot of contacts, etc. But the premise was MLM as well. You buy "shares", but for every share you bought you also received jewelry that you could choose yourself. So the premise was that you received jewelry for your buy-in, but the shares earned you money when you had people signed up under you. The pitch to get people to come to your house was "exciting business opportunity",etc, etc as well. My father tried to get into it, but was unsuccessful as he isn't a good 'salesman' for grease. I was a late-teen at the time, and I remember hearing some of this stuff thinking "WOW this seems too good too be true." But aren't they all? Goji juice is popular up here right now. All the home based 'franchises'. Good times.

The money is made from the people you recruit. To become a member you have to commit to a minimum monthly purchase. A percentage of that money is distributed to the members above through several levels. The more levels of people you have below you, the more you make.

The only selling one has to do is convince people to buy an over priced product on a monthly basis. Then continue selling them the blue sky that soon they'll be making money too.

My uncle sold that a few years ago I think. He brought over a brochure at a family holiday and when my Mom and Sister (who are both Type 1 Diabetics) read the part about it curing diabetes (and cancer and heart disease, etc.), they laughed in his face. The sad thing is that I think he really believed it.

And that is the sad thing about some of these products.....Some may or may not have health benefits. But as an earlier poster said, these time of product tends to prey on ailments or financial promises.
If I had some type of disease, it would be great to find a miracle juice or drug. I would love to believe that it was saving my life, not just lining someones pockets. I remember seeing a Goji juice story on TV a while ago. Dateline or something like that. They went to the 'founders' home trying to interview him. They tried explaining the health benefits behind it, which may be true, but the guy came across as a greaseball, and therein lies the skepticism.
