Not sure I would call that a rookie thing. I have been biking my whole life and I constantly get that pretty mark on my legs.

wear the grease with pride!  No matter how experience I feel with working on my bike I always wind up with markings of my cassette on my forearm somewhere.

I typically always get gear marks on my shorts/pants i wear while I carry my bike upstairs.  I have to carry it on the inside so it doesn't scuff up the wall as I turn the corners.

I'm not a rookie, and I get chain ring marks from time to time. :-)

I always get those when I unclip to early to stop and put my foot down. I get the good stamp of grease on my calf. All the time

I love that look. I can always tell when my son is near my bike because he gets the same mark on his shirt and shorts!

Nice!  I get grease on my legs all the time, but it's not usually that pretty.  It's often just a black smudged circle

Several hours later I discovered another mark on the outside of that same leg.  Not sure how that happened?

I read somewhere that this is a sign of a rookie as they don't yet know how to do regular bike maintenance and keep things clean (me).  Glad to know I'm not alone, though.

Nah, "rookie rub" is called that by roadies because rookies are usually the ones that can't manage a track stand at a light, and/or can't keep their leg out of the way of the chainring when unclipped.

Around here, we call it a "Fred Tattoo". Amongst roadies, this is a MAJOR faux pas.
As much as Triathletes are concerned with their gear, roadies are concerned with their 'look'.

Hello

When I get that mark on my leg I leave it for a day.  Then the next time out on my bike I clean the chain after the ride.

We all get that!

I'm still a roadie at heart and I swear, if I ever got that mark I would run straight into the woods and scrub with leaves (or something) until it was gone.

Her's a link to a great article...

Ha. Great article.  Seriously, though, is looking good really that important even if you can't "ride good"?  Cuz while I don't ride good, I also don't look good.

In roadie circles, it is better to look fast than to actually be fast!

Of course it really doesn't matter how you look and much of this is said in jest. I love to play both sides here... snobby roadies and geeky triathletes. I have a foot in both camps. (I'm not much of a roadie or triathlete, maybe more of a snobby-geek!)

Yeesh. I've been known to get a greasy chain mark even when I ride on the trainer.

I'm not a rookie. Just a dweeb.

That's why you unlip with the left foot - so I've been advised...  But I don't.

I get the series of punture wounds on my calf when the big chain ring smashes into the back of my leg.  that doesn't wash away that easily....   BTW, this is more common than you would think in MTB...
