I might seem like a martian for asking this, but what type of coverage will there be of Kona on October 15? Will it be on NBC, OLN? What time does it start? For how long?

Live coverage the day of only via : http://www.ironmanlive.com

It is taped, and will be shown on TV sometime later, after lots of editing in of the personal stories and such.  Check schedules and listings or just pay attention here.  Good chance it'll get posted about when the schedule is announced.

I know of the edited, personal story, etc. part. I saw it last year, but I am surprised that there is no TV live coverage. Isn't it considered a major sporting event?

True, but not particularly exciting for those outside the sport in an unedited form. Even marathons are very seldom shown in their entirety (the Olympic Marathon and a few others being exceptions). Imagine 9-10+ hours just for the pros to finish, and 17 to get everyone in. I wouldn't envy the commentators who have to fill that. I'd love to be there and soak up the atmosphere, but I'm not sure I could stand to watch that on TV for that long.

Sadly, our sport does not lend itself to TV coverage.

Yeah, its too bad. But I was hoping they might show the last hour or so, and recap on the earlier stages of the race.

Can you imagine how BORING it would be to watch all 17 hours of the race? I just want the hightlights and the feel good stories thank you very much!

Isn't the Tour De France shown live? It can be pretty boring to some as well. I think OLN should pick it up.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't the time difference make for a pretty ridiculous time slot?
And if your not watching it live you would be better served watching it chopped up with highlights and the human interest stories.

The time difference would probably help... Eastern time it would start around noon and the pros would wrap up around 8-9 at night, instead of pre-race coverage starting at 3 am EST.

The Tour also only picks up at the end of a flat stage or before the first climb of a mountain stage. Some of those stages are 6 hours long and they don't show the whole thing. I can say from a personal stand point that I like watching NBC's coverage much better than the ones they show on OLN.

I'm not saying they should show the whole race,. You're right, talk about watching paint dry! But like the Tour de France, they can show the last few hours and recap on the earlier stages of the race. They would have plenty for at least a 2 hour show.

True...however some years the winning time is down under 8:30 or less while here recently it has been in the 8:40's so you would have an undetermined amount of possible dead air. It would be a production nightmare.

Triathlons are not very spectator friendly. I would hate to watch the last 2 hours of live coverage before the pros finished. It would be a bunch of people running. If I wanted to see that I would watch a marathon live.

I personally like the NBC coverage of Kona. If it were up to me, I would like to see more of the age groupers race and a little less feel good stuff, but that's just me.

Totally agree with you. There has to be some feel good stuff, but there is a limit. I think they went overboard last year with the girl friend talking with her hair stylist coworkers. But we dealt with that in a thread about 6 months ago.

I guess I have to admit that live coverage wouldn't really work, given the nature of the sport. Its too bad that the sport can't get the visibility of prime time sports.

I also think it would get boring just because of the length of time. Our local TV station had two local races on TV, Tri for the Cure and the Boulder Peak (but didn't see anybody from BT) They broke the Olympic race into 30 mins pro and 30 mins amateur and featured some interviews and clips during the race.

I think I read that actual coverage won't hit TV until November.

I guess that a lot of BTers would. I know BT is popular but I don't think the TV networks would be too pleased with the ratings!
