I got the new Van Halen album recently and it has been my go-to for the last couple weeks. I was listening to it while running yesterday and thinking about how great it sounded. Eddies guitar sounds completely awesome. That guy could make a guitar do anything. Daves voice is the perfect compliment. They just seem to really gel. For the time I was listening it seemed like all was right with the world again. I like Sammy Hagar, and the stuff Van Halen put out with him as the frontman was generally good, but it still pales in comparison to Dave IMO. It has been a long time since I have gotten a new album that made me want to listen to it like this. Perhaps I'm waxing nostalgic a bit for good times I had listening to VH back in the day, but it is a really good album if you like VH music.

So wadaya think? Dave or Sammy?

Both are great...and I know it wasn't a VH tune, but on a Sammy note, I just couldn't get "I Can't Drive 55" out of my head on my ride yesterday.  That said, I don't think I'd want David doing Sammy tunes, or vice versa.

Saw both in shows back when VH was at their peak.  Dave was better.  I like Sammy too.  I would characterize the shows as follows:

Dave - much more spontaneous and you never knew if he was going to be on or not.  I like that about live shows.

Sammy - Clean tight show, probably a better singer.

One of the best concerts I have ever attended was VH opening for Black Sabbath back in the late 70s. Roth singing for VH and Ozzy with Sabbath. I can still remember that this was the first time I had ever witnessed an opening act steal the show from the headliner. Roth was all over the place...other than Axl I have never seen so much energy from a singer. I like Sammy....but VH was not VH without David Lee Roth.

I really liked Montrose. I really liked Sammy when he went solo. When he went to VH I thought that was a great choice. He certainly brought more "talent" to VH...BUT. They both seemed to loose their edge as so many bands do when they blow up. I never liked Van Hagar. And that is no fault of either... But Van Haggar never compared to Van Halen. Sappy watered down rock lite. Sure DLR has his problems, I can't even say he is really "talented"... but he has such a unique sound. He was perfect with VH and one of the best front men ever. Diamond Dave FTW.

I like Sammy a little more and I am struggling with the new album.  I also don't like the harmony as much on this album. Not sure if it is Wolfgang versus Michael or not. Don't know who they use in the studio. I have seen both in concert (not in David's prime) and Sammy was definitely better.

David for early VH, but Sammy for his own music and what he has done with multiple other artists.  Sammy is a musician/singer.  DLR is a front man that HAD great chops and show.

Ex-husband is a guitar player and a huge Eddie/VH fan, so I have listed to A LOT of VH over the years. Even though I know I'm in the minority, I always perferred Sammy over Dave. Although, I have never seen them live, so perhaps that might make a difference... But from the perspective of just listening, I'm in the Sammy camp.

I'm a VanHagar fan.  I guess it's when I grew up.  Dave is cool but with the leopard print spandex he was a little to glam for me in the 1984 album videos.  Hagar just rocked his red clothes.

The "Red Rocker" for me.  I even named my road bike Sammy (obviously the bike is red).

I love VH and really like the new album but Sammy will always be my choice.

Pshhh!!!  Really?  I can remember my babysitter bringing over VH 1.  I nearly wore the grooves off that record listening to it so much!  Pure magic.  NOTHING ever recorded by Van Hagar can come close to the raw sexual power on that album.  David Lee Roth.  Period!!!  I would sell my soul to the devil to be a part of something like that.  Hell, maybe those guys did...

Love, Love, LOVE the new album!  I think it's really cool that most of the tracks are based on the "archives" (like demos from the 70s).  There is only one track on the whole album that I skip over (sometimes - Bullethead).  I can't say that for many albums.

I dig them both, I'm a huge Montrose/Hagar/Chickenfoot fan, and I dig a lot of Roth's solo stuff.

But for Van Halen, I've got all the songs from the original VH w/Dave albums (minus 1984) and the Hagar era albums (minus Balance) and the new cd on my phone and have been shuffling through them the last 3 weekends over and over.  I find myself skipping over a lot more Sammy songs than Dave.

Pure singing talent?  Sammy.  Showmanship?  Dave.  Best mix for VH?  Dave IMHO.  Sammy's run had a lot of great tracks, but for my taste, got much to "ballady".  And if Eddie never gets on the keyboard again, it'll be too soon.

I saw that tour at the Cape Cod Coliseum, right up front.  VH was mind blowing, Ozzy was horrible, the rest of Sabbath were good.

Fast forward to the Women and Children First tour, same venue.  The worst concert I have ever seen. VH was so drunk that many songs weren't even recognizable. They "headlined" and only played 50 minutes. I left vowing that they would never get another nickel from me. They didn't until Sammy joined.

Now I don't think it's an either/or decision. They're different bands with some of the same musicians in them.
