As the one attributed to Obama...nothing! Absolutely nothing. I just am curious if those that are burning the barn on one side will burn the barn on the other side. Benefit of being a fence sitter. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The commercial where it shows the Mom, getting up early to get the kid to swim practice, watching from the stands, until the child is in the Olympics really gets me misty
Obama's comment doesn't have that type of cool commercial hype |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It reminds me of a recent Daily Show bit, where Jon Stewart was calling out one side for complaining about the other side doing things that they had recently defended. And of course, predicting how when they were in that position again in the future, they would again defend it. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I do think it's cute that MSNBC (aka Obama campaign HQ) is trying to manufacture a "you didn't build that" moment for Romney. I think it's a far stretch to compare President Obama making an argument that the wealthy should pay more in taxes and stop thinking they’re “just so smart” or that they “worked harder than everyone else” realizing they could never have build their business without the Government. Where Mitt Romney reminded the athletes to be grateful for the parents and coaches who loved and supported them. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Completely different statements, even in context. "If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that, somebody else made that happen." means a whole lot different thing than "You Olympians, however, know you didn't get here solely on your own power,” Pretty easy reading really. |

They sound very similar but they meant 2 completely different things. |

"If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that, somebody else made that happen." means a whole lot different thing than "You Olympians, however, know you didn't get here solely on your own power,” Pretty easy reading really. Except that's not what Obama was saying. In context, he was saying business owners didn't build the roads and bridges they depend on for their success, somebody else built them. The same way olympians didn't 'build' the support structure they depend on for their success.I find it funny that one guy takes a quote out of context and twists the meaning and then the other guy attacks back by taking almost the same quote out of context and twisting the meaning. And then we wonder why it seems so hard to address serious issues... |

Maybe they did not build THOSE roads but they are maintaining them and paying for the next set of roads. Obama's message was political and about the rich paying more in taxes. Romney's wasn't about politics or taxes. It was about the support structure for athletes. Apples and wheelbarrows. Edited by TriRSquared 2012-07-24 9:58 AM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TriRSquared - 2012-07-24 8:57 AM Obama's message might've been political, but it was the same - if you're successful (whether as a business owner or an olympian), you got help along the way. If you want to say he's putting too much emphasis on that help and not enough on an individuals initiative, that's fine, I think you can support that interpretation, (and you might even get me to agree). But to cherry-pick a single line and use that to say that Obama thinks individuals play no part and gov't is responsible for 100% of everyone's success? I'm not buying that. But they did, via tax dollars. Maybe they did not build THOSE roads but they are maintaining them and paying for the next set of roads. Obama's message was political and about the rich paying more in taxes. Romney's wasn't about politics or taxes. It was about the support structure for athletes. Apples and wheelbarrows. Both sides are twisting words and taking things out of context here and we're all falling for it. We get outraged about some unintended or twisted meaning instead of actually having the candidates talk about the real issues. Instead of twisting Obama's words to something he didn't mean, why doesn't Romney go after him for the meat of what Obama was trying to justify - that the rich should pay more in taxes? It's something Romney has a different view on and surely he could come up with some coherent arguments against it. That would be a debate worth having and could maybe even teach us something about both of the candidates rather than this manufactured outrage which just distracts us from the real issues. |

Agreed. Is this news? Wow the left is really grasping at straws for damage control to Obama shooting his mouth off. |

Another key difference is that our Olympic team funded by voluntary private donations and sponsorships. Seems ironic to try to beat up Romney with this when he was speaking to a group that manages to exist just fine independant of the government/taxes. |
