Subject: TV will be the doom of us all
So, last night I came home and unline other nights where I just don't care for it or have time (or the tv set's actually free), I sit down and watch television. My roommates have some stupid setup where we basically have a computer hooked up to the tv and can download stuff and watch it on the tv. It also enables us to record shows and save them on a harddrive. This being said, there's only one tuner, and when something is recording, we basically can't watch anything else. Anyway, so I turn on the television and see that something's recording. Oh, someone's recording So You Think You Can Dance. Eh, it's probably my roommate who freaking literally records every single freaking thing. So I cancel the recording and think nothing of it and channel surf for a while. A couple of minutes later (probably after he heard me flipping the channels) he comes out of his room and stands there looking at the TV, obviously confused and somewhat pissed and asks me if I stopped his recording. I politely go back and continue the recording and am thus forced to watch on our other tv set, uncoveniently located in the other room where it's not as easy to watch tv and eat dinner.

Like, honestly, I know he had the f***ing time to watch it in the first place (he sat down and started watching after I went to the other room), but was probably being lazy and wanted to skip all the commercials. But seriously, is this what our world has come to? Maybe I should quit my day job and sit on the couch at home, watch TV, and become a fata$$.

I watch 2 hours MAX TV PER WEEK. I just don't care for all the stupid retarded shows these days. I know most people on this board don't have much time to watch TV with all the training and such.

Oh, to add more background to the situation; the reason why I watch on that TV so much to begin with is b/c back at our old place, my roommates would ALWAYS be playing Halo on the other TV. You guys with families are lucky you don't have to put up with this $h!t.

End of rant.

so you canceled something he was recording and you were pissed?  He was in the other room, why didn't you ask him if you could stop recording?  What am I missing here?

I'm guessing that you're missing the part about suppressed resentment and extremely poor communication.

I wouldn't worry about it. By the sound of it, you won't be living there much longer anyway. I DO however, LOVE how you managed to impress upon us that you don't have much time for TV what "with all the training and such"

Dude, if you'd seen the conflict that my family (four kids, two tvs, everyone wanting to watch something different) got into over tv, you might reconsider that last bit about families being lucky. At least you're dealing with an adult instead of a cranky 8 year-old.

My parents had the perfect way to deal with this.  Every Sunday, when the new television guide came in the newspaper, my sister and I had to mark all the shows we wanted to watch and get them approved by my mom.  We were only allowed to watch 2 hours total each week, so we had to make it good.   No conflict.

Now, strangely enough, when I go to my parents' house, they have their televisions (all three of them) on all the freakin' time.  They'll watch anything that's on.

I am amazed at people who complain that they don't have time to do things, but yet still somehow know who won on So You Think You Can Be a Japanese Game Show Idol, or whatever it's called.  I wonder if they actually turned off their tvs how much free time they'd discover sitting around.

That said, I can't judge people for their television selections.  I love some of the dumbest shows and look forward to watching them.

Get your own place! Why do you live with roommates when you don't like what they do around you? Even in grad school when I lived off $800/month (before taxes!) I had my own place, a tiny efficiency apartment, but I didn't need to share things with people I didn't care for.

That's not lazy, that's efficiency. If you can multi-task by doing something else while the show is recording, then skip all of the commercials, you just saved 15 minutes out of a 30 minute show.

But yeah, the general rule with roomates is to ask before you do something like that.

Yes, I realize my fault in not doing this. But as I stated above, he's the type to record 15 different shows in one week, hence my assumption it wasn't important.

You try having a roommate who sits around at home all day watching tv.

And I don't think it's too much to ask for one hour of TV per week whereas everyone else gets like 100 #$#$#*&! hours.

Could be worse. He could spend all day laying pipe on your girlfriend in your bed. Or he could spend all day smoking crack with money stolen from you.

Well, I'll be living there for a while to come. Funny though, considering the past 5 months of training and always being over at my gf's place, it didn't even seem like I lived there at all.

Uhh, did you forget the sarcasm font?

Bingo on the supressed resentment part. You show great potential as a psychologist (don't know what your day job is). And there was no communication to begin with, as was my intent. I think me channel surfing was communication enough. I mean, it did get him to come out of his room!

But you have no choice but to put up with it, cuz they're family. I would be just as annoyed, but if it was me, hey, it's my fault for having a family in the first place. I'd be expecting it, and nothing less.

Oh, I was pissed about why he couldn't record it on the OTHER TV, which has TWO tuners. Or why he couldn't just watch it LIVE. And yes, I eventually went and watched on the other TV to let him record/watch his show.

He made the assumption I would watch in the other room, which I clearly haven't been doing for the last, say, 5 months.

We both made assumptions, and hence we were both at fault.

May I recommend Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death? If that's too heady, start with Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

Solved that problem at my house every room, but the kitchen, including bathrooms (some one in this house likes to take relaxing baths watching tv, not me) has cable.  I even have a 27" in my garage just in case I am training out there.  No more discussions on what to watch.

I actually think you did him a favor by turning off that ridiculous dance show. If my roomates came home and I was watching that...I'd be immediately flipping the channels  like it was the time my parents walked in on me watching porn (not that that has ever happened)

GAWD DAMM HIM for recording while you were out and then decided to choose to watch T.V. at that time that he was recording.  Selfish bastage.
