Subject: Which Calf Gets Marked? (Needed for Tattoo!!)

I finished my first tri (a sprint in Tyler, TX) this weekend, and I am absolutely HOOKED on triathlons.  That's surprising, as I really struggled with some major stomach cramps during the run.  But I figured I'd enjoy it, as I love swimming and cycling, and I'm starting to actually enjoy running.  (Weird!)  Anyway, I'd like to commemorate the event with a tattoo on my calf.

So which calf are they supposed to mark with your age?  I thought it was your left, which would mean that my tattoo would go on my right calf.  But they ended up marking our right calf, and that would mean the tattoo would go on my left calf.

So which is it supposed to be?

Marking on Left / Tattoo on Right  -or- Marking on Right / Tattoo on Left

Thanks for the info!!

-Joel

It doesn't much matter, as if you have a tattoo on your right calf, at the next race they would just mark the left one anyway.  They wrote my race numbers on the front of my shoulders, since the sides of both have tats.  The volunteers will find a way to creatively mark you, no matter how you've marked yourself.

I've done many races with race number on one calf, and age on the other calf.

Maine Rob - 2008-09-23 11:31 AM I've done many races with race number on one calf, and age on the other calf.

Most of my races, they put my age on one, and the race distance (if there are multiple) on the other.

It makes no never mind.  If they need to write on that leg, they will write over, around, under, wherever.

Let me tell ya, it's fun trying to figure out where to put the number on some guy's arm when he has a full sleeve...

What? The use of a double negative?  Have at it...

He can't not.

Get your Tat wherever you want. If you get it on the back of your calf they will put the number on side or vice versa. What are you getting?

Either calf... doesn't matter.

The real question is this... do you want people who are passing you on the bike to see it (left calf) or do you want people you are passing on the bike to see it (right calf).

If I get a tattoo I'm getting it on my right calf so when I pass folks on the bike on the left they can see it....I don't want folks passing me to see it as much.

It doesn't matter each race is different as how they do body marking. I've done lots of tris and done body marking at races from sprints to IM.

What are you getting?

This is the one I'm thinking about.

Tattoo Idea

I did a quick search for "Triathlon Tattoo" on Google Images and found it.  It a little more the style that I'm in to than some of the other tattoos I saw.

I'm planning on going to the tattoo parlor this weekend to check things out and get an estimate.  Before I go, does anyone else have tattoo ideas?

I'm not a tatoo guy, but that one is pretty cool. I guarantee you most people (especially non-tri'ers) will look at it and not know what it is, and then say "Oh!...Cool!" when you tell them.

I have my left arm from shoulder to elbow and my left leg from foot to knee. At every tri/du I've done they go to write my number on my left arm and theres like no room so they write it on my forearm, and when they go to write my age on my left calf they always have to ask someone where to put it. It's pretty funny actually.

I am still contemplating a tattoo. Just can't figure out what I want. I love'em. Wife has two (one with my initials...trusting gal).

My only thought is that you may want to just wait a bit. Getting a tri tat after your first is like tattooing the girl's name after the first date Just my thoughts.

I've thought of that too.  But I'm confident that triathlon is definitely a sport for me.

Since I was a kid, I've been horrible at organized sports.   I've always enjoyed water skiing, biking, swimming... all sports that are dependent on me and no one else.  Triathlon is definitely one of those sports!

And for me, the tattoo isn't just a symbol of something that I'm involved in.  The tattoo will be a reminder of something great I accomplished.

Most will mark the right calf, but there's no specific rule about it.

That's what I was gonna say! Only once out of 5 tri's have I been marked on the left calf though, FWIW.
