Subject: Olympic Distance Ready?
I have done 5 Spints so far, 4 of which have been open water. I am certainly a MOPer. I am looking around 2min per 100 meter, 17-18mph bike and a 9:00 mile runner. I avg. about 4-6 hours training a week, putting nothing but distance in, few intervals, little intensity. I try to run twice a week, with about 6 or 6.5 as my max run, bike rides are about 20 miles and swims are in the 1km to 1.4km in distance. Anyways, my question is, am I ready for Oly distance or should I get my distances up. It is hard for me to get more that 6 hours a week training with work and family. I respect DFL, but prefer not to be in that boat. Any advice on if I should move up, or what I should do to move up would be greatly appreciated. I am considering the Giant Acorn Intl. which is Oct. 3rd.

Sounds like your about in the same boat as I am... and I've signed up for the Giant Acorn. Should be a good race, and I would be afraid of being DFL, if I were you. Sign up, and do a few longer rides and swims between now and then (Theres some nice 25-30 mile routes utilizing 123 and 7100 which should set you up nicely for the oly distance), you'll have fun.

get up early (or earlier) and get in an extra 2-4 hours a week until then...
but if you don't, you'll probably be ok.
good luck!

My stats are almost identical to yours and I am with you all the way. I was going to do Giant Acorn too until I realized it was on my wife's birthday. Whoops. I think you are ready, as am I so will try to lengthen 1 or 2 workouts a week to get a longer bike, run or swim in occasionally until my Oly comes up. I think that is doable. I'll probably do the Patriot or Naylor's Beach. I am leaning towards Patriot because the course sounds easier. Good luck.

Stats appear similar to mine as well.  I've been holding back on registering for Williamsburg Patriot Int'l/Oly in Sep.  I'm pretty sure I can finish, but it is a bit of an unknown, especially as I'm still two weeks away from my first sprint.

Somewhat comforting to see others at my training level are considering this distance as well.

When I did my first Olympic, I had only done one sprint and, while I'd biked the distance and swam the distance, I had never run more than 5.5 miles at a time. I was slower than you too.

I did fine and I'm sure you will too.

Glad I found this thread 'cause I'm a midle-aged tri newb in  similar boat.
After a few years of serious cycling (4-5+k mi/yr inc mult 100+mi rides) last winter I decided to tri a local sprint tri this April (400M pool swim).  Last Dec I swam for 1st time in years & could barely finish 50M.  Worked on my swim since & had a blast in the Apr tri (despite much more contact in pool than I anticipated!).  Did another sprint last weekend inc 500M OWS (no wetsuit) & hilly bike/run course.   Had fun but felt I could have done more (i.e. faster or more distances).  Now I have a chance to do an Oly next month.  Current stand-alone times are 1500m swim ~40-45min, 40k bike ~65min, and 10k run ~56min.  I've done 2 sport bricks of Oly distances, but not all 3 together.  FWIW- My max swim distances in training have been ~1650-1800.
Goal- finish Oly in bottom 1/4.
Doable, or wait 'til next year??????

Ha!  I have not done any yet and my first will be an OLY.  Originally, I just set the goal to finish but I know I can do the distances now.  At this point, I want to finish and my goal jumped from "finish" to "finish" in the middle of my AG.

IMO, if one can do all the distances in a stand-alone effort in reasonable comfort, they can finish an oly.

My guess is that you could probably finish an Oly right now, but it would be helpful to add a couple more hours of training to your week.

This thread has given me great comfort... thank you!!!!  I've got my first Oly this weekend and while I KNOW I can finish, I'm a little hung up on making sure I'm closer to 3 hours than 3 1/2.   I need to let that go and just do what I can do and have fun.

Good luck this weekend!  I have the same type of mentality.  I start with one goal but then I keep pushing the bar up a little higher as I go.  It's tough to just "settle" for anything.  I think it's called drive so at the end, reflect on where you were when you started so you can appreciate what you have accomplished through the journey.

Thanks!  Perhaps obvious to the experienced, but useful insight for newb's or those bridging to 1st Oly.

This thread was helpful to me too.  I am hoping to do an Oly next year as I am completing those distances now also. I am a lot more encouraged to go ahead.  Good luck!!

I've never done an olympic, but "ready" means different things to different people, but you should be fine to finish.

I'd probably amp up the training volume more if I were you so you can comfortably do the distances.  I'd definitely get some longer bikes in or at least get some bricks in after a 20 miler to get your legs going longer.  If time is that big of an issue, than sleep 30 minutes less and workout longer or get some longer weekend sessions in early in the AM.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm doing a half next month and I know I'm underprepared, but it just is what it is and I'll finish it because I feel like doing a half this year and not waiting.

Good luck!  You'll be fine...

patriot is crazy flat - i'm racing it this year and i train on it all the time.  in the same boat as you and the OP with current speeds.  i'm looking forward to it.  the run is a little boring...i plan to have lots of people cheering for me on the parkway after they get out of church that morning!

Glad to hear it is flat meherczeg. I like the sound of that for my first OLY. Of course, I will tell all my non-tri friends that it was terribly difficult. See you there, I hope. I am still trying to get my ankle to heal from the spill I took at the Tavern tri.

for all your non-tri friends just saying "i got up at the buttcrack of the morning, swam 1.5k, biked 40k and ran 10k" will sound terribly difficult!!!!  someone at work told me my upcoming sprint (400m pool swim/11mi bike/5K) sounded like a reasonably challenging race....HA
