I see some people going to 10+ races in a year, and spending Thousands on equipment.  Wondering how much people spend on race fees and travel in a year, then what is the value of the equipment you use at a race: bike, wetsuit, shoes, clothes, helmet etc?  Sorry to those of you who would rather not think of the total amount you spend.

Hmm this year

Running Shoes~$250 (more than 1 pair)
Bike~$2800
Wetsuit~$100
Clothing~$300
Race entries~$450
Gels and food~No idea

So this year somewhere around $4000

Granted the Bike purchase is a one time deal, and I didn't account for IM race registration if I decide to do it. It's not cheap, but it sure is worth it.

Once you make that initial outlay, though, it's really only entry fees (well, and travel, if you need to do that) that cost you any $$.

We started camping for races this year to save a little money.  The $80 I spent on a tent was less than the cost of one night in a hotel.  We also are building a kennel at home so the dog can stay by herself when we stay for one overnight.  Kennel costs are ridiculous!  One night at the cheap kennel is $20 and it seems that we always end up paying for 2 nights.  Other than that, we try to stay pretty local; within 3 hours.  Since both my husband and I race, we also make an effort to do the same races.  If we're driving to a race, might as well both do the race.

I'm one that doesn't want to know. I'll do over twenty races this year, several of them requiring overnight stays, and a couple that require flights to get there. New bike, new shoes, etc.

I have asked mdaddy to look into a financial accounting system as part of the training logs to keep track of tri-related expenses.

Been in tri's for 3 years.  Each year I spend more.  Probably average between 2-3 thousand.

ETA:  Theres way more than buy a bike.  Gas, hotels, entry fees, nutrition, gear, upkeep, ect...  A finance log would be scary helpful.

I spend more money the further I get into this. I seem to wear stuff out at a pretty good rate and when I replace I usually upgrade. This goes for shoes, tires, wetsuits, clothing (racing and training), etc. I will travel out of the area for at least four of my races this year (including Hawaii). Next year will be more races out of the area.

Adding to the expense is my wife and daughter who are developing in the sport and now realize that new and better gear is addicting. My wife can no longer shake her head at my purchases as she is right there wanting the same stuff. Double the expense but none of the guilt.

I don't know, and don't like to think about it, though I do justify that it's an investment in my health. And I certainly hope my wife never realizes it.

I have asked mdaddy to look into a financial accounting system as part of the training logs to keep track of tri-related expenses.

I don't need an on-line tool, I have several family members keeping tabs... there goes my college tuition...

I'm pretty frugal, some might even call me a cheapskate or a tightwad.  I've purchased three bikes (2 of them used) in 4 years of triathlon, a used wetsuit, "used" wheels, etc.  On an average year, I go through 2 or maybe 3 pairs of running shoes, but I've been lucky to have "normal" feet and purchase most of my shoes on the clearance racks.  I plan to buy one pair of bike shorts (bibs this year), one bike jersey, and one pair of running shorts each year.  T-shirts aren't usually planned and I've got about 6-8 white dri-wick shirts.  I do a lot of my shopping at the end of a season, so my running tights came in March.  I don't spend a lot on GU's or drinks (but I've been known to load up on powerbars when they're on clearance).  Even so, I'm probably spending $500 per year on "maintenance" stuff.

As for bikes, my tri-bike cost is down to $0.23 per mile and my road bike is $0.38.  My old road bike was almost a push as I sold it for what I paid plus a little for the new tires and aerobars.  I'm sure I can get them into the $0.10 range.

Once I started adding up all the little things I'd been buying for training and such along with the entry fees and everything, I realized if I'm going to spend this much on just the little stuff, I might as well spend a couple thousand on a nice tri bike now and make each one of these races "count" a little more (and boy am I glad i did). Haven't had time to add it up yet, but I'll probably do a spreadsheet on it soon.

I REALLY don't want to know how much I spend on this sport.  My wife and I both do tri's so everything is doubled.  Plus, we did an IM this year, which is a boatload of $$$.

Coaching, nutrition, travel, lodging, race fees, equipment....many many thousands

Travel to an IM and tri costs go way up with 4 of our 5 kids ...we have separate line item in our budget for triathlons..this year my husband started racing. We are over 10K a year....

averge CPR= $117
("cost per race" Tongue out )

7 sprint races entry fees= $400
first pair of tri/bike shorts and a bike shirt= $70
race number belt, misc tools, tire tubes= $50
2 new tires= $98
Gas- most of the races i go to are within an hour away, and i split the gas with a friend so maybe like $200 max including my coffees and breakfasts on the way Smile

grand total of $818.00 this year

(oh and i did buy a shiny new bike, with new pedals and new shoes, cages, saddle bag- ran me about $1500 total, but I am going to amortize that over the life of the bike, so it only adds maybe $25 to my CostPerRace Money mouth (and yes, I am a geek)

crap- i forgot to add in my new wetsuit.  It was $350, worth every damn penny, but I'm not counting it b/c it was a birthday gift from my parents.
(but I can also amortize that over the next 5-7 years too Wink

The key to successful equipment purchases is great gifts!

It's easy enough to spend a few thousand on a destination race alone.  as an example:

IMLP registration fee - $550 + active.com's fees
5 days min for hotel - $1500 would not be unreasonable
airfare for 2 - $1000?
bike transport - $300?
car rental -
food -

I have 2 tri bikes (cervelo P2K, P3c) and two sets of race wheels (Zipp 999 and Zipp 606) so I'm not stingy with myself.  I spend plenty on races (tris/mary/ultras) per year, but it's all worth it to me (and fortunately my wife) and at the end of the day, I have no regrets and am happy with how I spend my money.  YMMV.
