Hi! I just started training and I think it's going o.k. I plan to do my first tri in September. Unlike all of the other newbies, swimming is not my problem it's running. I'm starting slow. Running one minute walking two, but it's coming along. I love this site, it's been a great resource. Thank you.

Actually, I do have a question, is there a glossary of terms somewhere to help me? What's a brick? What's a blog? Am I stupid for not knowing these things?

Welcome Amy!!! You will love this site--lots of friendly helpful people with lots of encouraging words. What tri are you training for?? My first is in August, but I'm already looking for one to do earlier than that--- I hope to do 3 sprints this season, if it all fits in my schedule.
Good luck with your training. The running will come---I too started with walking/running and finally the running took over and now my short runs are 5 /8k and my long one is 10k. My swimming however remains a struggle and my least favorite sport.
Cheers!

Welcome and good luck with your training!  Hmm....there must be a glossary somewhere.  A brick is doing 2 of the sports back to back (like bike then run).  A blog is computer log where you ramble on about whatever you want - on this site it is also your training log.

Keep us posted!

Thank you. Like I said before, you guys are a wealth of knowledge. I just got back from running and weight training and I must say, the running felt easier. I was not clock watching as much as I have been.

Hello.... I'm new here as of yesterday (or the day before, I dunno), too. I'm also doing my first tri in Sept. AND if that weren't enough, I'm also a good swimmer and a crap runner. I've read people on here knocking themselves for running 8, 9, 10 min miles. That's FAST in my book! LOL!

Anyhow, welcome.

That's pretty funny, I too think that's fast. Right now I'm trying to run at the pace of a 10 minute mile and can only make 1 minute, so welcome to the club. Maybe together we can encourage each other!

Well I'm right there with you! I'm a strong swimmer... usually exiting to T1 as one of the first people out of the swim... but then the bike... and I notice people starting to pass me... (I had a mountain bike last year...big heavy tires.) then the run... and who-ever didn't drown on the swim or catch me on the bike will definitely pass me in the run... Most of my training this year has been run related so far... Working on my endurance and a little on my speed...(and again, that's a relative term!) We water babies need to stick together... Good Luck on your training... it will all come together in the end! LW

That's precisely how I imagine my first tri. I'll get placed in an early heat and then watch everyone pass me until I stumble (crawl?) across the finish line! LOL! *shrugs* Oh well, at least we're doing it!

Amy,
Welcome and congrats on getting going on your Tri training! You've already taken the most important step...believing that YOU can do this. You can and you will!! I'm already envious of your swimming ability so you've got a big leg up on many of us here. Just be patient and your running will improve with time. Good luck and most importantly, HAVE FUN!

From one newbie to another...welcome aboard. And I consider myself in the "bad runners" club I too would be ecstatic to run a 10 minute mile. Guess we'll all just have to really kick butt in the swimming and biking

Anyway, welcome and good luck!

Hello Newbie from another newbie. September will also be the beginning of my tri-experience...the bike part actually nerves me a bit...one question...do most people use bikes that you need to use bike shoes or can a beginner use their running sneakers? That may be silly questions but oh well.

Welcome to the site -- you will find that a lot of us are running-challenged!! But we soldier on and even walking the course is a lot more than a huge percentage of the population does!! So hang in there -- you will do great.

One does not need specific bike shoes, and in fact, you will probably save some transition time as you will not have to change shoes for your run. As you get better at cycling, chances are that you will want cycling shoes, but until that time, I say use your running shoes. You will have lots of opportunity to shell out as many dollars as available as your triathlon career continues!

Thank you for the advice...I have not been on a bike in a few years, so it is intimidating, the swim training is going well...and the running ....well I will have to get back to you on that one And the bike is my mental training

thank you
