The original was one of my favorite movies as a teenager, so they have some big shoes to fill.

Yes, and my wife's current celebrity flame in Patrick Swayze's role.

I'm sure this will be a future date night special.

When the original Red Dawn came out, I was 11. My mother felt it necessary to take me to see it. Yah, she felt it NECESSARY that I see it. I've always loved it, though how I interpret it and its meaning has changed as I got older.

I've been looking forward to this new version since it was first hinted-at a couple of years ago. They've run into a lot of problems with production, and then public perception of its potential message. I'm just looking forward to seeing how well the producers and director adapt the original concept to a contemporary setting and culture.

Let's admit it. The original was ridiculous. But that was why we loved it. I remember seeing the first ads on TV for it, and losing my mind because it was the first new film to get the PG-13 rating. I was 12 at the time, so right on the cusp. I think I was actually 13 by the time it hit theaters in my small town area.

As it was completely a cold war relic, and now really really dated, I would imagine the entire premise and back story would have to be much more sophisticated now. Meaning, they actually need a back story and premise this time.

Don't get me wrong, I get all nostalgic too, but I'm arriving at that point where I look at the 80s schlock and remember "oh, we loved this not because it was awesome, but because we were adolescents and this was all we had!"

That said, Visionquest in an unquestionable masterpiece that totally holds up today, and it is a crime against film that it is not yet on bluray. I still want to drop enough weight, and gain enough strength, to climb the peg wall.

The original was ridiculous.

BLASPHEMY!  Any film with Lea Thompson is awesome.  Well, except for Howard the Duck.  That was definitely sub-par.

Gonna be hard to do justice to the original.

Funny about the foreshadowing with Charlie Sheen's character going all wacko...

I have always had a thing for her since  All the Right Moves. What a cute booty she had back then. I'll bet it's still pretty decent.

Do you think Jennifer Grey ever watches the original and gets all nostalgic about her original nose?

I'm so sick of remakes. Does anyone in Hollywood have an original idea anymore?

Loved the original.

I have had this fear for some time that Goosedog does not really exist, but is in fact, my own Tyler Durden. Have I been asleep and posting under another name?

This thread makes me think I may be on to something.

BLASPHEMY!

Howard the Duck was awesome! I hear the actor who played Howard got into some bad stuff in the 80s, did some weird furry porn before going to rehab and is now working as `Donald' at Disney. He must've had a good quack to straighten him out.

Back to Red Dawn -- it didn't need a back story -- we were so scared of Russia back then we would've believed anything about them, especially the `They came up through Mexico' bit.

Exactly. It didn't need one, because we WOULD believe anything then. I'd like to think that with our world shrinking as it is, even the most over-the-top action movie based on a US invasion would need some pretty good backstory to make it sound reasonable. Of course, I am thinking of the same audience that made Honey Boo Boo an idea worthy of selling ad time. So, I'm probably expecting too much.

Wasn't so much as problems with production, more that their parent company/studio went bankrupt .  It's a MGM movie and they've had basically no money since 09.  Same reason the latest Bond movie, Skyfall, has taken so long.  There was even a worry that Quantum of Solice would have been the last Bond movie

When they were filming it, it was China invading.  But in the last 4 years, I guess MGM got too much Chinese money, and worry about the Chinese box office, so it was changed to someplace American movies don't get watched - North Korea

I showed the trailer to my wife last night and she couldn't remember the original Red Dawn at all.  So after I got done beating her silly, I looked up the old trailer to show her and wow, the special effects were horrible  haha.  I remembered it as the most epic movie ever and um well.

I heard the back story sort of picks up where Team America left off.

one of my favorite movies as a kid.  many of it makes sense though.   If you could you would run into the hills and hide if you could.

I am sure it will be all screwed up.  Partly because I think remakes never seem as good as the originals.  To me there always some good parts but they add in some cheesy moments that just seem to take me out of the spirit of it.
