Subject: Jean size

Ok I have gone from a women's size 10 to a 3 junior's. Should I be afraid of size change? I have NEVER in my life been this small. I have always worn a 14 or higher in women size jeans. Please tell me if this is something to be concern with!  Thank you in advance!

Sorry I wish I had pictures but I don't. I wish I had a picture of when I was 250 now that was a picture!! I believe I wore a size 22 in pants. That was when I was 19 or 20 years old and I lost it one time in a month went down to 119 and my doctor just about died. The reason for the visit to the dr was because I could not stay awake. He said I lost the weight too fast and that I needed to start eating again NORMAL not the way I was doing it. I am an what do you call an emotional eater. BAD THING TO HAVE!

2 yrs. and 50ish lbs....doesn't sound too bad to me.  Without knowing how tall you are, you're probably probably at a healthy weight to maintain.  How many calories are you eating per day?  Do *you* think there's an issue with your weight/size?

So, I'm confused.

Are you asking if it's a bad thing that you've lost weight?

My answer would be that it's entirely dependant on HOW it happened, and why.

Are you trying to lose weight? Are you following an exercise plan? Are you following some sort of diet plan? Are you eating balanced meals? --- if yes, then good! You have been successful.

Are you starving yourself? Are you eating and throwing up? Are you engaging in excessive (compulsive type) exercise? --- if yes, then you have been successful in your quest to lose weight, but you are probably ill in another way that will require treatment.

Are you not trying to lose weight at all? Did this just happen accidentally? --- if yes, get yourself to a doctor. And quick.

I think we need more background.

Good Luck.

So, I'm confused.

Are you asking if it's a bad thing that you've lost weight?  No I was just wondering if I lost this too fast!

My answer would be that it's entirely dependant on HOW it happened, and why.  It all happened after I took up running.  The reason why I don't know why! You got me here!

Are you trying to lose weight?  No  Are you following an exercise plan? Yes  Are you following some sort of diet plan? No  Are you eating balanced meals? Sometimes I try to follow but I lose it. --- if yes, then good! You have been successful.

Are you starving yourself? This is something I have to say No too because I eat what I want I do not hold back.   Are you eating and throwing up? No  Are you engaging in excessive (compulsive type) exercise? Now this one I have to say I don't know I run 3 to 4 times a week with a total of 16 to 25 miles per week.  I try to get to the gym but does not seem to work. --- if yes, then you have been successful in your quest to lose weight, but you are probably ill in another way that will require treatment.

Are you not trying to lose weight at all? No  Did this just happen accidentally? No  --- if yes, get yourself to a doctor. And quick.

I think we need more background. Female 5'1" I believe I am 120lbs. age 49 and holding!

Good Luck.

SIZE 2 IN JEANS!!!!

5'1", 120 lbs size 2 is fine for some women. I'm the same size (though a smidge taller) and that's what I wear. I'm 28, but still - petite women who are in good shape and naturally somewhat lean tend to stay that way. Or at least it's possible and HEALTHY. Just because half of the population is grossly overweight and a size 14 is now "average" for someone who's 5'3" doesn't mean it's healthy or normal. As long as you are eating right, exercising and your doctor says you're healthy, don't worry about it.

You can check your body mass index here:

http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/

I put in 5'1" and 120 lbs - your index is 22.7

BMI Categories:

* Underweight = <18.5
* Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
* Overweight = 25-29.9
* Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

You are in the normal weight range. You can find out more about BMI and its limitations here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_mass_index

I don't know much about the speed of weight loss, I believe the general heuristic is about 2lbs a week loss is acceptable.

My wife thought I was underweight when my BMI was 21.6. I told her statistical studies said otherwise but she did not care about the statistical studies. She much prefers 22.9 to 21.6 (21.6 being too "girly").

There are, of course, other things to be concerned about. See:

I've lost no weight in the past few years but maybe shifted some fat to muscle. In that time I've dropped about 6 jean sizes, and maybe fit into a 0. I know I changed body shape enough to maybe drop a few size shifts, but not nearly as many as I have actually dropped.

I'm convinced it's called 'vanity sizing' and yes it is stupid.

WOW!  It also doesn't mean it's NOT normal.  I know quite a few people that are in this size range and could kick our a$$es in road races, bike races and triathlons. They are extremely fit.  Let's not judge here.  Can't we all get along??

FYI, I'm 5'3" -107 fightin' pounds and swim in a size 2 jean yet get my butt kicked regularly by these "supposed" unhealthy individuals in ultramarathons and other events.... just sayin'.

Did you see the HEIGHT that I put to that size 14? You can be a big woman, fit and strong and a size 14, but the odds are pretty good that you're taller than 5'3". If either you or I were a size 14 at our height, we wouldn't be fit and healthy. That is NOT taking into consideration the bigger, taller, thicker women who ARE in good shape.

The women on this board are an EXCEPTION - they are trying to take care of themselves. That is admirable. That's not what I'm talking about.

Here's the key: "have always worn".. a size 14.  The clothing manufacturers have been quite busy lately vanity sizing all the clothes. I lost 50# two years ago and was overjoyed to find that I now wear size 4. I'm 5'9" and never wore size 4 - even back in high school when I was on the varsity basketball team and ran track. I still have a junior size 9 skirt from that time period (yes, pack rat) and don't fit into it.  I guarantee that a 2009 size 4 pair of jeans is not the same as a 1999 or a 1989 size 4 pair of jeans. So you can't really compare even a few years ago sizes to now.

I do some sewing, and the clothes patterns are sized only by measurements. I am one size bigger now than in high school, for all measurements for patterns, but in ready-to-wear I am usually 4 sizes smaller. Go figure.

Oddly, my size varies so much from brand to brand that it has become truly annoying to try on clothes. Depending on the brand and store, my pants size can vary from a size 2 in Brand A to an 8by someone else. And my husband wonders why it takes so long to "just buy a pair of black pants".

Crap - I hate that thing! I'm 5'4 and 150 lbs, and yes, can kick alot of people's @sses lol BUT, was a size 10 in high school in 1984 at 108 lbs, and am a size 10 now. Makes NO sense!!!

Then again, I know I could lose about 10 lbs easily, if not 15-20.
