It gets very quote in the water. Swam 15 yards past the bouy by mistake last race and all of sudden it got very quite, I knew it was time to pick my head and see what happened.  did a quick turn and got back on  course.

Lesson learned: look up more often when nearing a turn

I think the word you were looking for was "quiet".   *yep, I'm smarmy.*

At least you noticed.

In my first triathlon I was just chugging along when I feel something tap the top of my head.  I look up and a guy in a kayak says you are swimming way off line.  I look up and I was about 30 yards off the course.  I decided it was smart to sight the rest of the swim.

Its not necessarily quite when your off course. I ended up in the middle of a rectangular course once, I was following four other people! Didn't realize the guy at the front of the line was sighting the second turn buoy when we hadn't even turned past the first one!

I thought this was going to be about missing the wall on flip turns in the pool...now THAT is embarrassing!

My first year of racing I didn't have contacts or corrective goggles.  Plus I was ultra slow swimming. I would routinely drift 20 or 30 yards off the course until the kayakers would catch me.  The quiet just meant another wave of racers had passed me by.

Oooh! Me! Me!

Have you ever tried to stretch your toes really, really long?

I've also did the off-course number. I claim I was trying to swim to France.

Yep done that one.

Then again, I've also almost fallen asleep when doing laps.  I'm serious.  Last year, was my second year swimming and I did the swim early in the am (5:30).  It was during the warm up (a 400 or 500 I believe) when I realized that my eyes were closed and had been for at least 6-7 strokes.  Interestingly enough, I even bi-lateral breathed during this little "cat nap".

Actually almost did it on the trainer once on a very early morning ride this past winter.  But I've never come close to it on the run.  The wife thinks I'm crazy that I almost fell asleep in water.  Exercising.

I don't think I'll ever be disqualified for swimming inside a bouy.  Now if there are disqualifications for swimming over a dam then I'm screwed.

My goggles were fogged up and all I could see was a person in a kayak and faintly see the buoy about 10 yards to the right of the boat. As I got closer I lost sight of the buoy and headed for the Kayak...the person in the kayak started backing up as I got closer to him. I ended up over shooting the buoy by 25 yards!

A favorite local sprint that I've done several times is in the TN River.  You swim diagonally across/down the river and then diagonally back/down the river.  The problem is, there is a pretty good current in the river!  So if you aim for the buoy, the current will sweep you down river and when you finally close to the buoy you are down stream of it and have to swim back up river to get around the buoy.  You have to 'aim' way upstream of the bouy to account for the strong current.

So to answer the OP, 'If you look up and see people swimming in the opposite direciton that means the current hase taken you down river and you are in trouble!'

...When you notice that the swim course seems awfully long.

Happened to me once in a triathlon. I was only supposed to swim one lap of the swim course, but I accidently swim two laps. My only thought while I was swimming was "Gee- this course seems a lot longer than I thought it would be!".

A couple of weeks ago the #3 swimmer in a time trial start race came out of the water after the first lap of a 2 lap swim. He had to go back in and do his second lap. He lost the overall race by less than 8 seconds
