I want to do my first IM in 2010 and am trying to figure out which one. I am leaning towards the Beach2Battleship. I live in Upstate NY so I don't want to travel cross country. Something within one day driving. Anyone have other suggestions? I don't care if it is official Ironman or not.

I just did IMLP as my first IM.  It was awesome!  Loved being able to train the course a few times ahead of time as well.  I paid for community fund spot last year.

I am liking your choice of B2B. Chesapeakeman would be my second followed by IMWI.

You still have 14 weeks and 4 days for B2B this year..... why not make it this year?

I had two friends do Beach2Battleship last year.  One friend told me just yesterday how he really loved that course.  The other friend nearly froze to death literally on the swim

I would bite the travel bullet and go to IMFL.  We got a little condo (not on water, .25 from start) for $69 per night.  Great course, beautiful setting, great 1st IM.  I'm a 50 year old, slightly overweight, mother of five kids, and I made it, so it must be a good first course . . .

I noticed that B2B was still open this year and was tempted to sign up and get the IM monkey off my back. After thinking it through I decided to wait until next year. When I started this journey I was over 320 pounds and decided I needed to make a significant lifestyle change. I chose this sport as the vehicle and really love it and what it has done for my mental and physical wellness. I am still learning how to pace (truthfully I have only learned how not to pace so far, but am working on getting it right). I think I will benefit from another year of training before jumping into it this year.

JohnnyKay,

Please let me know how you like your IM next month. I saw this one on trifind.com and was thinking about it.

Skippy,

Please let me know your thoughts on the race. I am leaning in the B2B direction as it has already received the all important spousal support.

I have done IMAZ and IMFL.  B2B this year.  IMFL is a great course (flat) for a first IM.  I'll let y'all know after B2B, but from RR it seems like a good choice as well.

From a curiousity point of view, what does a community fund spot cost vs. a normal IM cost? I know the HIM I'm doing this weekend is like $225. Maybe I'm afraid to know.

Yes, I was thinking it was somewhere in the $1200ish range.   Can't exactly remember since it was a year ago.  But I will say it was worth every penny.   I am so glad I did it.

I can't help but laugh at this. If I ever paid $1100+ for one race I would have the check and the bib hanging on the wall. That's just crazy.

I think this year community slot is less than last year. For '09 races many still have community slots open so maybe that effect price for '10. I believe the cost for community slots in '08 race was $1000 then for '09 races it went up to $1300 and on Active the price for IMLP is $1100 when I was looking Monday...$600 is a donation so you can write it off on your taxes.

Yah I agree it is a lot but in the scheme of what an IM costs the entry fee is nothing.

We have 6 people flying from MA to WA, renting a car for 10 days, staying in hotels/houses for 10 days, coach, tri bike transport..all that stuff is well over $5K this is for my Ironman Canada.

  • If that is why are planning on doing it then perhaps it isn't something you should be doing. I hope you have better reasons.

who cares why chevy wants to do it?  it's his/her deal.  lots of people do it as a bucket list item.  whatever chevy's reasons, it's not for any of us to judge.

This post actually made me sign up.

I agree, everyone has a different reason for doing something.  As long as they want to do it, who cares?  Heck, I just made the decision to start training to do an IM.  My 12th marathon comes this fall and I am looking for a new challenge.  Since I already cycle a good bit I want to do a tri.

Actually, I need to find a different thread to figure out if I should do a IM or a HIM first.  My guess is if I did an IMFL in 2010 I would be ok training wise and could toss in a couple shorter races along the way to get the feel of things a bit.

That is spot on. Travel cost is the main driver.

    Hotel at least Wed-Sun @$100/night
    Food, gas, expo
    B2B registration was around $350

I am sure the cost increase even more with a flight added in (ticket cost, bike transport cost, airport parking, transportation after landing, etc.)

Let alone any additional equipment you might need (e.g. travel box for bike, wetsuit, etc., etc.)
