Subject: Kitty cat discord

I have 2 female cats, Noelle and Molly, who are 4 yrs old (Molly will be 4 in a couple of months). I've had both of them since they were 9 weeks old. Spayed, declawed house cats.

I recently (2 months ago) acquired a male cat, Lorenzo, at around 12 weeks old. Lorenzo was rescued at 4 weeks from someone's backyard; he had virus that was blinding him and he was very weak. I'm happy to say that he is healthy and has regained his eyesight. He is neutered, declawed house cat.

Noelle and Molly are not accepting Lorenzo. Recently he has taken to sleeping in my pedestal bathroom sink because they won't attack him there. He has slept in my bed with me in the past, but Molly has attacked him and now he contains himself to the bathroom sink. Mostly, I think he's just getting his feelings hurt and is feeling unwelcome (by the girls). Last night he stayed in the sink almost all evening until I picked him up and put him on the couch with me. When I went to bed, I put him back in the sink which is where I found him this morning. Normally, he is the first one at his bowl but this morning I had to take him to his bowl for his feeding. I put him in the litter box then carried him back to his sink.

I make it a point to feed Noelle and Molly before feeding Lorenzo. I give the girls attention before Lorenzo. I allow them their pecking order.

I'm at a loss as to what to do to get my girls to accept Lorenzo. I feel bad for him, hiding in the bathroom and feeling rejected by the girls. He has a very cushy blanket that he sleeps on so it's not a comfort issue. I've only ever had 2 cats at a time and haven't had a problem in the past with the cats getting along. I don't know what to do to make the girls accept Lorenzo. I've been letting them figure out the pecking order and Lorenzo has been submissive to them... but they've got to stop beating him up! I don't think he feels safe in his own home.

Any suggestions?

Hmmm...I only have 2 cats (male and female) so I don't know how 2 cat react with a third.  But...my female (fixd and declawed) was 2 years old when I got my male- he was only 7 weeks old.  She hated him and would hiss anytime he got close to her.  Eventually she got used to him, and after he settled down (after getting fixed and declawed) and didn't want to jump and tackle her all the time she warmed up to him.  It took a few months though.  For awhile I was worried that I would have to find him a new home.  Now they cuddle up together and nap and you would never guess they never got along.  I would give it more time- as long as your new rescue kitty is eating, making it to the litter box, and is healthy then I wouldn't worry.  You know how caddy girls can be, and cats are no exception.  I am sure they are all just stressed out because a newbie is present   And once the pecking order is clear they should get along.

Awww... that's so sweet and sad...

Mr. Bob was an only cat for several years.  I had a "porch" cat, called Little Girl, but whenever she came inside Bob would attack her (ruthlessly).  Well, when I moved to where we are now, I brought Little Girl along and made her an indoor kitty as well.  It took a very long time for Bob to deal with her being inside.  And he still attacks her several times a day.  But she holds her own against him, and has been known to attack him once in a while as well.  And, I've even snuck into the bedroom and found them cuddling (when it was cold).

My parents have six cats (yes, they're insane).  Each new addition caused turmoil and strife for several months.  They just made sure each cat had a "safe" place they could hang out when they wanted too, and could get to the food and litter as needed.

Good for you for rescuing another kitty.  I'd love to see some posted pics.

I'll follow up the "time" claim with my own example. My 2 cats have been subjected to a smorgasbord of different animals throughout my travels, and while you would think they would grow somewhat understanding of other animals daring to be allowed to exist, whenever confronted with a new dog or cat they go absolutely nuts. They've been sent to my parents twice for varying lengths of time and every time they are confronted with their cat they lose their damn minds... for a few weeks. And then they deal. With time I'm sure they will grow to be more understanding...

As a side note, whatever you do, DON'T try and force them together. Not that I've done that, but IF I had, I would imagine that the conseqences are about the same as trying to give a cat a bath with out the benefit of oven mitts and leather jacket for protection (I bet you didn't know a declawed cat could make you bleed using only the pads on their front feet).

Sorry...I was trying to make sure I spelled your name right

Hey, you found Arcade Fire too, eh? Cool. The lead singer is from Texas.

Regarding cats, you know I hate cats. Especially those two furry balls of indifference in my avatar.

Anyway, the other day I saw a neighbourhood cat stalking around on my back deck. My cats are indoor cats. So, I figure it would be a good idea to show the outdoor cat to my indoor cats through the glass sliding door. So far so good.

Then I think, hey, wouldn't it be cool if they could hear and smell each other through the screen door. Well, things started to get weird. Chamonix started to growl and hiss, Winston looked unfazed as usual, however I closed the door and Chamonix kept hissing and growling at Winston for the next hour, as though they'd never met (let alone engaged is some seriously homoerotic mutual cleaning).

We have introduced other cats before, and while Winston usually enjoys the opportunity to sniff another butt, Chamonix hides somewhere and doesn't come out for about the duration of the other cats' visit (except to use the litter box, eat and drink). Both cats have been fixed, but I suspect the outdoor cat they met had not. My cats also have their claws, I am against declawing.

The same applies to small children and dogs, btw.

So, I would say that over time, once the new cat has spread his smell around, they will accept him, if never really dig having him around.

We had no idea that that would turn into The Arcade Fire. I just now finally found his CD and I love the whole thing. It just wigs me out hear/see him play. I'm so proud!!!

I guess you know that he and the rest of the band settled in Montreal. I think he married a Montrealer in the band. I was turned onto them by a friend who's a musician. Apparently they are making waves amongst musicians everwhere.

I would like to know how this turns out.  I have a five year old male cat, Darwin, who is a spoiled brat.  When my daughter came over for Christmas last year, she brought her kitten.  Well, Darwin was hissing and spitting something awful.  We could not get the big goof within a foot of the kitten.  I want to buy a kitten for my wife for Christmas and would like to know the best way to integrate the little tyke into the family without Darwin tearing him apart!

I'll send MURPHY dog down to play with him.  So far Murphy loves everyone and everything.  Can't guarantee he's cat approved.  Let me know.

I recently added a third cat to my household--didn't mean to, it just thappened. I know, I know, but he was a little malnourished thing someone dropped off on my front step and then there was Hurricane Ophelia--what, I let him drown?

Anyway, they get along now, but at first, I thought I was going to have to put my girl cat on anti-depressants. What I did was limit their contact for the first week or so. I have french doors to one of my rooms, so I kept the originals separated from the newcomer that way. They could see one another through the glass but not get at each other. Eventually the original boy cat and my newcomer were rubbing against the glass by one another, so I opened the doors. Girl cat pouted and got chased for another week, but now they all sleep in the same room and I've seen every version of grooming so I think we're good. The boys are better friends than the girl and the boy are, but everyone's civil and seems happy. Of course, I have three cats and my neighbors are calling me the crazy cat lady, so there's that.

It was only a little halloween hat- no harm done.  He no longer runs away from me when I get close, so I think he's forgiven me

KC was an only kitty for 10 years when I got Lexi.  He HATED her.  When she got fixed and had to stay overnight at the vet he was all happy because he thought she was gone.  When I brought her home you could just tell he was thinking "she isn't going away is she?"  and after that he just accepted her.  I think they were secret freinds when I wasn't araound.  When KC died and I got Charlie because I thought Lexi was lonely WRONG AGAIN.  She is still not fond of him but they are learning to get along.  I think they are also secret friends when I am not around.  They are very different cats and Charlie is still very much a kitten.

As Lorenzo grows up they will learn to get along but it does take a long time.  Make sure he has his safe place and do the best you can to give them all attention.  He can always have a play date with Charlie

Wow!  My cats did the same thing.  Annie tried to "talk" with an outside cat and Tiger hissed and fight, as if wanting to dash through the screen.  Then she started hitting Annie with her paw.  It's like she was mad that Annie is talking to the outside cat.  When the outside cat was gone, Tiger continuted to be mad at Annie.  My cats are sisters from the same litter.  Ever since then, Annie became aggressive toward outside cats.  I used to live on the first floor and when a cat passed by the window, both of my cats would be growling and hissing.

I started off with an only cat (Moko).  I decided he needed a playmate and brought home Drey.  There was much hissing and spitting and general crankiness on Mokos part...but after about 3 months Moko learned to accept Drey and there was detente if not love.  Fast forward 4 years and they are fast friends.  Curling up cutely together.  Then in my laid-off depression I decided I needed to rescue a 6 month old cat Kemu (also known as babycat).  Neither of the old farts like Kemu.  It started with much hissing and spitting, but even now 4 years after Kemus introduction she gets the cold sholder.  They snub her in her exuberance.  She is perfectly fine with that.  She doesn't want to be an old fatty anyway.

Basically they'll be fine...just give them time.  And when he gets hunrgy, he'll eat.  Regardless of what the others are doing...well unless they are keeping him away from his food.
