Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've just finished a very good 3-book series by Linda Castillo - Breaking Silence, Pray for Silence, & Sworn to Silence. They're actually billed as an "Amish Thriller Series" as the main character grew up Amish but left the culture and became a police officer, then years later returned as the new Chief of Police. I found them to be well-written and the characters are very compelling. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It really does depend what you're into, but for nonfiction: "Dove" by Robin Graham (yes, it's old, but it's good!) or "Maiden Voyage" by Tania Aebi. Both solo sailor stories. Or "Long Way Down" by Ewan Macgregor if you'd prefer motorcycles For fiction: Gregory Maguire is quite good, Terry Pratchett is one of the best authors ever. |

Let's Pretend This Never Happened, by Jenny Lawson (the blogess.com) - hilarious memoir |

Ready Player One was excellent. Daemon and Freedom(tm) by Daniel Suarez were also very good. anything by Neal Stephenson is a good bet. |

Cryptonomicon was one of the best novels I've read in a long time. Pretty long but the multiple story lines are intertwined excellently. I never did attempt his Baroque Cycle trilogy (Quicksilver etc..)... any good? |

So many options out there! The Stainless Steel Rat It's a series by Harry Harrison. 11 books and one short story inside a series of short stories. It's... well... Think anti-hero that everything just happens to work out right for and he ends up being required to render his services to the galactic good. Just funnier than hell and you really have to suspend your disbelief and enjoy the moment. Edited by DanielG 2012-06-18 6:44 AM |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. Kahneman is a Nobel prize winner in economics. He invented behavior economics. This book is a popular lit version of the science of decision making. It is very interesting book if you ever wonder why people do what they do. It is not written in a stilted academic style but its not a murder mystery either. The author is not talking down to his readers. The Paris Wife by Paula McLain. This is a fictionalized account of Ernest Hemingway's and Hadley Richardson's marriage and divorce. It is well written. I am reading both right now, actually just started, but I like them and will finish them quickly. For me that's the true measure of how much I like a book. TW |

I read A Moveable Feast a long time ago. Hadley is the narrator of the story, but McLain, perhaps unconsciously, mimics Hemingway's writing style. The mood in the first part, where I am, is on the upswing. The American expats are hard partying, brilliant, original people. Pauline is not on the scene, yet. Let you know tomorrow. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Olympic Dream by Henry Rono. It was incredible to read the story of a man who broke 4 world records in 81 days, and find out he was a raging alcoholic. He went into depth about how before he set those records, he would get completely wasted the night before and was hungover while running. He talks about running against Alberto Salazaar, etc. I stated in another thread, I can't imagine the times he could have posted if he was sober. Great man, and he is actually trying to take another go at running. |
