On a completely non-political note (well, unless you support the Empire). I see that Disney has bought Lucasfilms and is planning a new Star Wars movie, along with a plan to release a new one every couple of years (or at least until the franchise stops making money).

What ideas do you have for the next movie? Would you even go to see it? I would pay to see them show us the permanent end of Jar Jar Binks (perhaps for crimes against the franchise?). Should they show us more of the years between the emergence of Darth Vader and the rebels? What about what happens after the battle at Endor? Maybe reunite Luke et al as they are 40 years after the events of the first movie (kind of like the last Indiana Jones movie)?

Wouldn't Star Wars 7 just be based on the book, like the other 6 were?

My husband said he read all the books and the last three are just terrible...once vader dies it gets silly.  (He is a huge sci-fi geek)

Yes.  And furthermore Lucas made sure that the books did not trump the story lines for 7/8/9.  They will be original plots.

I'm on the fence about this...

On the one hand, I'd rather they just left the series alone. The 6 that are out there now are... enough. I've even come to accept episodes 1-3... in much the same way I accept other "bad" movies as good. (Looking at you Nicholas Cage films)

On the other hand... IF we must have more Star Wars films... I'd rather somebody other than Lucas gave it a try. We can only (New) hope Disney doesn't screw it up.

But this also puts the possibility of a Pixar animated Clone Wars movie on the table.  Now that would rock.

(For those w/o kids there is a cartoon series called the Clone Wars that takes place between movies 2 and 3.  It's very well done.)

I love Star Wars (my sons name is Luke) and I love this move. Lucas has totally strayed from the original formula and is not capable of making the movies IMO. He will have some sway over the story lines of the next 3 movies but it will be written and directed by someone who I hope can make it a real story again and not a slap stick kiddies movie aimed at his Lucas's kids.

Fingers crossed there are some cameos by the original cast...or better yet, more than cameos.  I'd love to see Han and Leia as parents to young Jedi.

I've read/listened to a few of the follow-on Star Wars books. Some would make good films. There's even one in a zombie theme!

Frankly, I think SW should have started and ended with 4,5, and 6. That's it. The one exception I could possibly see is the Brian Daley books. Would have loved a movie out of those. But only Harrison Ford can be Han Solo...and he's a bit long in the tooth to be playing a pre-ANH Han.

I am a huge fan...but an old school fan, and a traditionalist.

Agree.  But, I would be happier with a non-animated Clone Wars.

What franchise has ever had a longer life than Star Wars?  Since 1977...  35 years and counting!

Movies, toys, games, franchise, marketing...  $22 BILLION and counting!

I still see people in Star Wars Halloween costumes this year and EVERYONE recognizes them and knows them.

There's still a lot of life left in it.  Movie possibilites:  The origins of Han Solo and his criminal, smuggling history.  The foundation and development of the Jedi (a YOUNG 100-yr--old Yoda as a padawan).  The early days of the Sith and Darth Sideous.  Life after the Death of Sideous - the reformation of the Jedi, the hunting down of the last vestiges of the Empire.

Star Wars could easily go ANOTHER 35 years and go 3 or 4 generations long.

... So long as there's money to be made - someone will want to do it!

Bond. James Bond. 50 years since Goldfinger. Connery, Moore, Lazenby, Dalton, Brosnan, and the best of them all (for my money), Craig (And David Niven if you want to count the non-canonical 1967 Casino Royale parody).

Yup.  I stand corrected.  Great catch!  Although James Bond has probably only earned about a quarter of what Star Wars has brought in.

My prediction.

Luke turns evil and kills Han, and the theater erupts with cheers as he kills JarJar.

Yoda, Obi Wan, and Anakin follow him around in spirit form and heckle him.

Based on Luke's rescue plan from Return of the Jedi, I don't think he will be very successful as an evil ruler.

Probably.  The Bond movies have brought in $5 billion in ticket sales, but no where near Star Wars merchandise sales.  In comparison, Star Wars, combined, only has $4.5 billion in ticket sales.

But I'd enjoy a Lego Bond video game.  Speaking of which, both franchises have had great video games made - Goldeneye was the best game in the N64 era.

ya but Star Wars has 6 and Bond has 22. I would bet if Star Wars has 22 movies they would surpass $5 billion.

Apparently they've already leaked the initial version of SW7:
