Jumping off of the AMA declares obesity a disease thread, what do people think of the whole Big is Beautiful campaigns, and the whole idea that we shouldn't be judge based on our size/weight?

I think the same thing I think about every other special interest group:

I don't give a damn who you sleep with.
I couldn't care less what plumbing you were born with or what type plumbing you have now.
I'm completely unconcerned about what race, colour, creed, national origin, gender, sexual preference, organic origin, inorganic creation that seems to be the most pressing matter at the moment.

I really have more important things to be concerned with, like washing my parakeet's hair. I don't want to have it blaring out of speakers, I don't particularly want to read about it on the front page of the paper, and I damn sure don't need to love big brother. Leave me the hell alone with it and I'll do the same for you.

I think more animosity is created by trying to out-victim everyone else than if people would just shut up about it and work hard to get whatever it is they are looking to achieve.

But other than that, I have very little in the way of feelings either way.

(edit) and as a parting idea to mull over, if you (not the OP, these annoying beings that ram this garbage down everyone's throat) keep pushing I'll vote against your latest victimhood just because you're that annoying. Has nothing whatsoever to do with my feelings on the subject, just that you're that grating.

I don't have a problem with it in principle. If people are comfortable and happy in their own skin and want to celebrate it, good for them.

One element of it that I do object to is the idea that only "curvy" women (which, face it, is often a euphemism for "overweight") are "real women". You see it in advertising and the media all the time. "Real Women have Curves". "The first jeans for 'real women'", "We asked 'real women' what kind of moisturizer they use...".

I totally get that there is a false impression of what a woman is supposed to look like that is created in the media, and that many women, and more unfortunately, young girls feel pressured to live up to that unrealistic standard. But there is a difference between pointing out, correctly, that the women you see in advertisements or in fitness magazines are often made up, photoshopped, or cosmetically enhanced, and saying that unless a woman is a size 10 or larger, she's somehow not a real woman.

Great post. All of it.

To the OP I read two questions in your post.

What do we think of the big is beautiful idea?

and

What do we think of the idea that we shouldn't be judged on size/weight?

#1 - I find many things beautiful that others may not, and I am pretty sure others see beauty where I can't.  So big can most definitely be beautiful to some.

#2 - Agree completely with this, don't judge people on size and weight.  there are so many other fun things you can judge them on: fashion, political views, what bike they ride, whether they completed the ironman race before getting the tattoo or wearing the shirt, how high their seat is, do they own a gun...see the list can go on and on....

It sort of depends on the definition of "big." Crossfit big is hot in my opinion but it's not for everyone. "Honey Boo Boo's mom" big will never be physically what I consider beautiful no matter how hard you campaign.

I agree with a lot of what you're saying, but there's a huge difference between favoring one component gruppo over another and feeling that one person is smarter or more honest or whatever as a result of their color/religion, country of origin, etc. That's a poor comparison to make, IMO, and really diminishes the significance of actual discrimination.

I agree with a lot of this.
But as someone else mentioned, I think there's an underlying motivation to let girls/women know that starving themselves to look like the photoshopped images in the magazines is NOT healthy and NOT beautiful.

I think the message is, or should be rather, more of an "inner beauty" message - which I agree with.

I would rather see the message of "Healthy is beautiful" - as "healthy" can come in varying shapes and sizes.

I'm not sure if I will say this right...

BUT, making judgments on appearance is natural and always happened and will continue to happen.  I would prefer not being told what I personally think is beautiful or not.  That's up to me.

I also think that what people think of me motivates me to some point.  I want to be attractive to others, especially my wife.  I don't want to be an embarrassment to her.  Whether it by hygiene, weight, odor, whatever.

However, if you can't look the way you want due to medical reasons, or simply don't want to put in the effort, then your only other choice is to accept it and be happy with it.  I had to finally accept I will probably NEVER have 6pack abs and I can accept that.  If you constantly beat yourself up based on what OTHERS think of you, that's a "you" problem.  Like most things, change yourself or change your acceptance of yourself.  Don't expect society to change their perception of beauty just because you are insecure.

Oh, and more than size, I think humor and confidence is beautiful.  Not that fake confidence, but the real thing.  I have been attracted to people that are probably far from conventionally beautiful based on that.  Oh, and Asians.

The bottom line of the message is self acceptance.  That's an important thing for everyone of any size or gender.

However, there's a very fine line between acceptance and complacency.  If an overweight person is unhealthy, which is the case more times than not, could a campaign like this help push them further down the path of avoidance and denial that their bodies are actually sick?

Like Lisa said, what we need is something that refers to HEALTHY as beautiful, and healthy comes in lots of different shapes and sizes.  That type of campaign would show women (or men) of all different varieties.....

.....but perhaps not those grossly overweight.  You can love yourself but yet still know that you absolutely need to change for your own well being.  Keeping yourself sick because you're unable to change your behavior is not a beautiful quality.

Not in this society. You are wonderful just the way you are. Anyone who says anything different can be sued out of existence. Awards all around. No score keeping. The morbidly obese are just as perfect as the marathon runner.

It's the society that's been built ever since the first "creative spelling" paper was changed from a C to an A.

Nah, I like a girl who knows how to take her time and even go all night if she has too to get the job done. Maybe that is why I had a thing for many 100 miler footrace finishers. (had to add footrace so you guys did not think I was into bikers. ).

I think this is kinda BS. You can be unhealthy, and out of shape, and "complete" a marathon or olympic tri. You might even train for it for a few months and be in moderately better shape than before, but "completing" a marathon doesn't give you a free pass forever to say I just have a few extra pounds, but I'm healthy. This attitude really bugs me. You can never have done one of these things and be healthy, and you can have completed a marathon and be unhealthy.
