It's here.

Better. Faster...umm...Routier.

The main improvement is speed when loading. Routes should now load 3 to 5 times faster than they had in the past. I personally found the wait associated with loading some of these to be painful to the point of being embarrassing. It's much better now.

Here's what else we've got for you:

  • Editing previously saved routes. Click on the E button in your Route Manager and you'll be brought to the map page where you can edit the route as if you were creating it from scratch.
  • Change the sport of a route. Say you created a long route and realized that you created it as a run, but meant to create it as a bike. You can change that now at the Save box. This only applies to routes with one leg.
  • Draggable markers. When creating or editing a route, you can click and drag markers. The Distance value will update as you drag, the Elevation values and profile will update when you drop the marker. This is nice for testing different scenarios for a route eg. "what if I turned left here instead".  It's also useful if you have OCD and absolutely have to see the markers lined up just so.
  • Better handling of the USGS elevation service being down. If this happens your time spent trying to create the route doesn't get wasted. Which is nice. And which also leads us to our next item...
  • Reset Elevation button. In Create/Edit mode, pressing this will reset the elevation values for all points, and the displayed values, and reset the elevation profile graph. If you have a route saved with 0 for overall climb, try this in Edit mode. It's fun.
  • Cue Sheets. yup. Cue sheets.
    • When creating or editing a route, click on a point and a balloon will pop up with 2 tabs.
    • The front most tab accepts directions for that point eg "Turn Left On Main St."
    • Once directions are entered, a button called Cue Sheet will become available on the left side of the window.
    • Click on the button and a new window with the directions formatted for printing will pop up.
    • In View mode, the directions are displayed in the balloon.
    • Any points with associated directions or images will be black to make them easily identifiable. Wait...images?
  • Yes, images. In the balloon described above, the 2nd tab accepts a url for an image in create/edit mode and displays it in view mode.
  • Viewing single legs on multi-leg routes. When viewing or creating a route with more than one leg, a control will appear that lets you view and see the elevation profile for . distinct legs. This also results in slightly better performance when scrolling/zooming. Etc.
  • The line color on the elevation profile now matches the line color on the map so you can distinguish where one begins and ends on routes with multiple legs.
  • Less clutter with distance Markers: higher zoom levels result in fewer markers so it's easier to read.
  • Viewing a Route. You can view a route in 2 modes: Points or No Points. This is governed by a drop down box under the Distance Markers selector. The default is No Points. This was done for performance reasons. It's much faster to load a map and just display the one line with no markers and sometimes you just want to see the line.

Enjoy, play with it. Let us know if you run into any issues. Over the next few days I'll be looking at some of the upload things that people have reported.

Thanks to the bear, saling4, Mike 45 and Ron for helping out with the testing. Their assistance was invaluable as were the "suggestions" to include the ability to change a sport.  If you do find any bugs, blame Ron. The other guys all did a great job.

These are great!  Draggable markers are wonderful for when I'm running a regular route with some variation and want to know the overall distance without mapping the whole thing again.

Fantastic!  And I liked the Routes V1 but hadn't used it very much, so now that I know how much more effort has been put into V2, I'll dive back in.

Great work, guys!!

Mike,

Love the cue sheet ability of the Routes V2.  I was wondering if it would be possible for the cue sheet to show cumulative mileage instead of mileage between segments.  The cumulative mileage would be more helpful on the bike when using the mileage on the cycle computer.

Thanx
Dave

How about cumulative in addition to segments?

Ok, fine. The cue sheets now display the segment distance* and cumulative distance for each direction.

It's so hard to say "No" to you guys.

* The segment distance is now actually accurate, displaying the distance from the previous marker with directions and not just the previous marker.  I'm surprised no one caught that.

What exactly does this mean?

In Create/Edit mode, pressing this will reset the elevation values for all points, and the displayed values, and reset the elevation profile graph. If you have a route saved with 0 for overall climb, try this in Edit mode. It's fun.

Are you saying elevation change will only be the difference between two consecutive dots?  If this function is not used, does elevation get measured by summing up the elevation for every dot from the 0?

I tried to "reset" in edit mode, but it bogged down my laptop.

This is the map I'm working on... it doesn't seem right that my elevation gain should be 1200 ft for a 19 mile ride?!  It is hilly but not that hilly?

When you click 'Reset Elevation' the elevation and climbing values are zeroed out and the USGS service is queried for each point on your route. The raw elevation for each point is set according to the value returned and the climbing value for that point is recalculated as well as the overall climbing value. It then moves on to the next point.

If you have a long route with a lot of points it can take some time.

I took a look at your route and did some spot checking. The numbers I looked at matched the differences in elevation from marker to marker. Is there a specific place where it seems that the numbers jump? it

I love the cue sheet feature.... this is GREAT..  this was my one thing i wanted from gmap.. Great job...

OK when i was trying to create my first cue sheet, it seemed most of the time in the drop down box i was gettin End At.  I wasn't getting the other selections, i guess it thought my map was done, when it wasn't.  I would double click the last point to say "bear left" but instead i would only see "End At"  I don't know if i was doing something wrong or what it was...

You guys do great work.... thank you so much.

i think i figured out what i was going wrong... say i was going down Main St, then turn right on Apple Lane, if i was it hit the maker at the intersection on Main and Apple it was give me "End At" but if i turned right on Apple Lane, then went back to the intersection point i could then choose "Right"...    does that make sense?

I get it. It was designed to have "End at" as the only option for the last point on the route. This works fine, except if you're adding directions as you create the route, you only get "End At" for the current marker. I was creating a route and then adding in directions later so this didn't come up.

It's been changed so that all "End At" will be included with all of the other options if it's the last point on a leg.

Not sure there isn't a bug in the elevation profiling ] total climbing calculation - I created a route and have left it public, "Crow Hill Climb" in Mt. Kisco, NY - it's a short route as I wanted an idea of the grade % for this one hill - while the elevation graph shows the top of the hill at 74 ft, the total climbing comes up at 288 ft . . . not sure I am reading/understanding this correctly, but it just doesn't seem consistent - I would think the climbing for essentially one hill should be the same as the altitude change between the highest and lowest pts on the elevation graph. . . has all of my training made my brain foggy?

ps - all in all, love love love this website and the training plans, articles, performance member services, etc . . . love this route mapper and elevation profiler so I just want to ensure either I or it are working correctly!

Looking at your route:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/map.asp?routeid=15930

Is it still showing 74 ft at the peak?  I see it's 458(peak elevation)-215(starting point elevaton)=243ft high releative to your starting point.  Hovering on the top of the hill shows the 243 relative height.

Using the hover tool on the points as you start climbing the hill, you can see the % grade...it's a good 30-40% grade to the top.

Does this help?

ok - so I looked at another route I was mapping and it seems the elevation graph is still charting in meters while label is indeed feet - am I able to fix this on my own? the public route is Pat Griskus Olympic Bike in Middlebury, CT . . . (i.e. I fear that all of the routes I have charted are going to come out this way . . .)

thanks

Hi Mike,

When I go in to edit some of my routes the distance is double what the distance should be. For instance, the link is to a 50 mile or so route but it listing closer to 100. Any ideas?

Thanks,
