I have started taking the train to work.  It is relaxing not having to drive.  I thought I would be able to read, but the train rocks way too much and I really got dizzy.  However, I noticed a bunch of people reading.

Can you train yourself to read in a moving vehicle?

I can easily read in an airplane, but put me on the ground and naseua ensues in a matter of minutes.

When I was a kid, I could read the entire trip.  Now I can read an hour at a time before I have to give the eyes (and ears) a rest and take in the scenery (or sleep)

I can read it on a bus, I can read it with no fuss.

I can read it in a car, I can read it going far.

I can read it in a train, I can read it in the rain.

I can read Green Eggs and Ham, I can read it, Sam I am.

(I O'Ded on The Lorax last night, sorry)

Sometimes in a car, used to on a train (but would rather watch the scenery or sleep), but only been on a plane once so watched the movie during the time and talked with the wife and kids and looked out the window.

Yes in a plane or train.

No in a bus or car.

Not sure why.

I don't even like riding in the passenger seat in a car, I'm much more comfortable being the one behind the wheel.  I've never been a good passenger.  I can't read on a bus either, but a plane is OK.  I haven't done any train travel.

All good stuff.  Seems the populace is split.

Has anyone gone from being able to not read to being able to read?

Can I train my mind?  I have an hour commute and it actually depressed me staring out, since most of the route tranverses the poor (no way the rich would allow a commuter train to go through their pristine neighborhoods or even allow the opportunity for the poor to see how they live.)

For years I couldn't read in the car or on the train -- it made me sick to my stomach and gave me a headache every time.  One day, I tried reading on the train while chewing gum and I haven't had a problem since, as long as I chew gum.  I don't know why it works for me -- I can only guess that the chewing equalizes something in my ears that previously caused the headache and nauseousness.

Try it!

i can read on a car/plain/bus/train for a while with no problems.  After about an 1.5 hours or so i do get a headache and have to stop.   I think it is just fatigue from having to focus your eyes in a specific spot while your head is moving around.    No nausea or swimmy head, just a straight up headache.

No problem for me.  That's how I get through long trips - lots of reading.  I can sit forward, backward (like on a train).  Not one issue....

The backwards part is the kicker.  I can barely look at the window.  Need to be sitting the same direction as the train.

I read standing up on the metro every day, the only challenge is when the controller is very "touchy" with the breaks...and I go careening in to the unlucky person near me.

betsy - 2008-03-25 5:50 PM Plane is ok, car is pukey time and I do not remember the last time I was on a train...ohh wait the subway in NY but I get pukey if I am on too long, Like from JFK to the city..ack I want to barf when I am finally there.

Hey how about when we were on the Metro in DC!  I couldn't read the information about the registration while Patti and I were riding over there.

Once I was fishing on Lake Ontario in a rather small boat (14 footer) and the waves were about 3 feet high.  If I sat there and tried to tie knots in a fishing line, I would get seasick.  Otherwise, it didn't bother me.  When I was a kid, I couldn't sit on the swing, twist it up and then spin around as it un-twisted.  Made me sick every time.  I could never be a figure skater, as much as I think I'd look pretty cute in one of those outfits.

I can read in a car, while driving or being the passenger. It is much easier while being the passenger. Reading on a plane is easy, can't remember the last time I was on a bus long enough to break out a book.

It has changed for me over time.  I used to be able to read or crochet while riding in a car without any issues but it's getting where it's starting to bother me.  I must ride on a bus facing forward only now.  The train in Italy was different and it didn't bother me to sit backwards and draw while moving.  I think because it was more closed in like a plane which I have no problems with at all.
