Subject: Work Situation
Okay, here is the background information. About nine months ago, a coworker of mine was on the bubble. Our mutual boss gathered everyone up and took a vote of all things to see who thought that my coworker should be fired. In the discussion leading up to the vote, everyone was in agreement that he was a piece of crap and that he should be fired. Sooo the boss said, okay, all those that think he should be fired, raise your hand. Oddly, I was the only one that raised my hand. Everyone sat their quietly. Pussies. Now the office joke is "Did you raise your hand? Then shutup." whenever complaints about this fellow arise.

In that time the man's performance has been the same... Our boss gives him crap ALL the time. I honestly don't understand how the man can live under those conditions. It must be stressful.

Fast forward to today. I find out from another frustrated coworker/friend that he is now working under this loser. I laughed cuz I thought he was joking. Turns out, the company PROMOTED him to the head of networking/infrastructure and they did it on the QT. I can't wrap my head around this. Promotion? He knows nothing of networking. He knows nothing of managing. How does this happen? Where does this happen?

Fortunately, he has no influence on me (different departments).

So the poll, what would you do?

Chucky,

Man I love you. You've got a lot of pent up agression. Your situation sounds all too common unfortunately in American companies today. Inevitaable there are useless, nardowells, who usually end up in senior management doing, well God knows what? While the compotent people stay at the bottom rung doing all the work. I learned a long time ago that working in a corporate setting is not a meritocracy. It's basically anarchy where the rules are arbitrary doesn't really matter what your skills are as opposed to who you know and whose butt you kiss. I rarely find any senior management that actually knows a). what their subordinates do, b)., how to do what they do, c). how to innovate and lead. Yet there they are running things.

P.S. Laughed out loud the last choice as I assumed it was a joke, although I'd seek counseling if I were you and you REALLY wanted to do that!

Your boss needs to take a vote to fire someone? hahahaha I've never heard of such a thing. I think your boss needs to go....that's my vote. Opinions from other colleagues make sense, but taking a vote? The real question is...how did your boss get that job??

Also--the statement "everyone who thinks he should be fired, raise his hand..." is just wrong, and demoralizing for the whole staff, really. If your boss has a problem with you--would you want him to discuss it with everyone else, then vote on if you should be fired or not? I wouldn't want to work for a company that operates this way.

Just my thoughts...

Yes, I thought the same at the time. It made for an odd situation. It was almost as if he needed buy-in from the staff. In the end, it didn't matter. He didn't have the nads to fire the guy.

That sounds like pretty stupid management. Termination of an employee should not be a group discussion. Your boss has no backbone and nor does he have any sense.

I would just suck it up. Even after everyone knows he sucks, he still gets promoted, he must have some crazy pull in that department, so I don't think anything will change the situation. Plus, like you said, you're not reporting to him, so I wouldn't care so much.

No, he's the coworker that is now working under the man that we will now affectionately refer to as "the Loser". He's wishing he had raised his hand when he had the chance.

He is not a jedi. The force is not strong in him. He's tried the mind trick to no avail - "you will quit your job and jump in front of the nearest oncoming steamroller"

We can hope for divine intervention...

People get promoted when management doesn't know what to do with them. The firing process is long and tedious (to avoid future lawsuites) and they'd rather just wait him out till he gets tired and quits.... As for you my friend, you've already wasted enough energy on this loser... funny energy, but energy.  I get worked up too at work, but then I realize, if it doesn't effect me and/or I can't do anything about it, I leave it alone.

Loved the last option!!

If you don't like the popsicle option, try speaking in confidence to HR about the morale issue, your boss' behaivior and the "reputaion" the newly promoted bass now has.

Having been in Staffing for over a decade, what YOUR boss did was deplorable, was not fair to the individual who was "voted" on and ultimately lowers overall faith in the entire management of your company.

If I were you and sitting in a company that was so fickle and unprofessional, I would seriously consider looking for a new home as when good things happen to bad people, bad things usually happen to good people. Kind of like the force and the dark side... Remember how yoda was forced to live on that swamp world... and he was a master jedi, for heavens sake! Be carefull you don't end up on a swamp world too...!

That manager's behavior was textbook bad leadership and mismanagement. The fact that The Loser was promoted speaks poorly for the overall situation too. The promotion was someone's decision and it's highly unlikely that they're going to either come to their senses or admit that they made a bad mistake.

Your friend needs to get out from under the Loser and you need to turn your back on the situation. It sounds like the politics are decidely with the Loser for now.

Hmm.. I sense politics here.  If he were to be fired, the boss didn't want to be responsible.  If enough people raised their hands, the boss can eaily said "hey, ChuckyFinster and the gang thought the same way too....."

Didn't read others replies, so I don't know if this was mentioned already, but sometimes companies put people in jobs that they know they will fail in so they have a legit reason to terminate them.

Sounds like a crappy situation.  Best not to make waves.  You never know if the guy has pictures of the boss, or is dating his daughter, or maybe he helps the boss keep the budget under the "salary cap".  Who knows?

I worked for a manufacturing company that had a rather clueless worker.  When the company was bought out, he got promoted to "plant manager".  So he came walking by one day and my friend said "hey Ken, the plants in my office need watering."

Is it possible that this looser was promoted to keep him from filing some kind of suit for the boss having a group discussion about his performance and possible termination?  Kind of throw him a bone to keep him quiet?  I know that if my work performance was discussed between my coworkers and my boss, and it was voted on as to my future employment status, I would put the bosses nuts thru the HR wringer!  And...to echo what has already been said, your boss could use just a wee bit of management training.

I hope that creepy co-worker is not an intelligent ass#*%, because if that promotion doesn't work out for him and he ends up getting canned, he has a pretty good lawsuit on his hands. That little "group vote"? Highly unethical, you can't do it. Keep that in mind if it happens to you. Not that you'd be fired for being creepy of course, but if they'll do it to someone else, they'll do it to you.
