Subject: Do you ride to the gym?
I have been wanting to ride to the gym, swim/weight train, ride home instead of drive to the gym, swim/train, drive home, change then ride.  My problem is that I just invested a few grand into my new bike and didn't feel comfortable leaving it locked at the bike rack up front.  So, when I was at the gym yesterday I asked some people in charge if it was an issue bringing it into the pool area with me.  I have never seen anyone do it, so I thought it would be forbidden.

I explained the bike was a bit expensive, even thought I told them I am sure there are more exp bikes then mine here, but I would feel better if I could take the bike in the pool area.  They told me it would not be a problem to bring it in, but I would have to keep it at the deep end of the pool by the fence.  I am totally cool with that.  What an awesome gym.  The workout area inside even looks out at the pool area where I could still see it from the ellipticals/weights.  Yay!!!

I ride my bike to the gym because 1) it's only four blocks away and 2) I don't have a car.  Haha.

The weirdest thing though is trying to ride your bike home after spinning class.  The feeling is pretty strange.

i don't go to the gym since i don't have a membership, but i do always ride my bike to the group ows that i participate in.  the pool is only two miles away, so i should ride my bike, but i usually end up taking the car or motorcycle.  i also always ride to meetup with the guys i do my group rides with.  it's roughly 4 miles from my door to the meetup point, which is convenient.

I usually ride to the gym.  I ride a beat up 3 year old hybrid that I do all of my commuting with so I have no qualms about leaving it locked in the bike rack.  That's cool that they let you bring yours inside!

No, because:

1. the gym is only a mile away, but I live in a city and there are stoplights every block... clipping in and out is a PITA
2. baltimore drivers are crazy
3. not allowed to bring my bike inside

dolphin: very cool that they let you bring it in the pool area !

Great idea, why not.

I live in LA and it always cracks me up when I drive by a gym and see people jockeying for the parking stalls closest to the front door! I mean, come-on people... why not stretch the legs a bit and warm-up a bit on your way in?

Just two nights ago I went out to dinner with the family... they took the car and I ran the 3 miles to the restaurant. My wife ordered for me and the food was ready when I arrived. It was a Fresh-Mex place, not particularly fancy, so the fact that I was a little sweaty didn't really matter.

You can apply this concept to lot's of travels.

I am thinking about doing this as well. the Gym is a little over 7 miles from my door, and there is a good bike path/lanes most of the way there. I will probably have to invest in a good lock though since I wont be able to bring the bike inside with me.

Our rock gym is on the way home from work on my bike commute, so sometimes I will ride there. I also rode to and from my yoga class (before it was cancelled) and I frequently walk (used to run) to and from Masters swim class. Extra bang for the buck!

When I first read the post, I was imagining the bike inside the pool area at an inside pool!  That seemed odd   I assume it's an outdoor pool with a fence.

I ride my "commuter" less nice bike to the gym on occasion, so I lock it up outside.  I mostly swim at the gym, so the number of showers can get silly.  One when I arrive to swim, one after the swim, and one again when I get home.  Depending on the outside temp, and which gym I ride to, I can certainly work up a sweat on the ride home.

If I could bring it inside and lock it to something solid or put it behind the front desk, I would. Otherwise, definitely not for me.

I don't.  I usually go to the gym after dropping my daughter off at pre-school.  Not really an option.

yes I ride to the gym, i like it.  makes it even easier to get all the time in, and bonus--->practice transitions, workouts in tri-suit/short combo.  win-win!

My friend and I have been doing this once a week..we ride the 2 miles to the indoor pool at 5:30am and then swim for a bit and then ride home and add quite a few miles to our ride home to get some mileage.  Works great!

I run.  If people will bust a window to steal 50 cents out of a car I'm not going to trust leaving my $3500 bike there.

I do sometimes.  It is close to my house, on a relatively flat road, and the traffic isn't too terrible.  They allow me to take mine in....they know I'm obsessive.

Edited, because dammit I have butter fingers tonight and can't spell

X1000!!!  We constantly have car thefts at my gym, so there is NO WAY that I'm locking a $3,000+ bike in the bike rack outside.  I've asked about bringing it inside, and was told that if they let me do it, then they'd have to let everyone do it...so basically, that was a polite way of saying "no".   Might look into a "beater" bike for instances such as this.

I run to the gym... my bike would probably be more at risk in the gym than locked outside lol
The sad thing is it's not even a joke.

No.  I ride my bike to work, then ride my bike directly from work to the gym, where I go to spin class.

I have at times but I take my old hybrid bike not my road bike. It's only a 3/4 mile from my house so it's more hassle to lock it and take the saddle off than to drive and I usually go either on my way to or on my way home from work.

JC5066 - 2009-08-13 2:52 PM I don't.  I usually go to the gym after dropping my daughter off at pre-school.  Not really an option.

Simple solution: throw bike on back of car, park car at pre-school, ride to gym, ride back, put bike back on car, drive home.

It amazes me that people don't think of these things. My boss and I were talking about how she's jealous that I'm riding in now, and she wishes she could, but she has to drop the kids off. I told her this solution - she already knows I only commute about halfway. I could see the excuses rolling, but I'm really hoping she considers it!

I love the idea of riding my bike to the gym, but I am also afraid of locking my bike outside. And my bike is only a $500 road bike, but it is the only one I have and I'm not sure the type of person who might steal it is really going to care. Plus, the bike racks are around the side of the building where there are no windows to see it from inside the gym and pretty much anyone could get away with anything over there. I also drive to work and during the week I stop at the gym on my way home. Riding my bike would only work on the weekend. I have thought about riding my bike to work, but have no interest in riding in the dark after work or after the gym.
