Subject: Bike v running
Not sure If I have this In the right place so sorry If not, I have just been told by the Doc that I have to give running up Frown for a little while, due to a knee injury. But I can still bike and swim If I do not get any discomfort that Is, what I would like to know Is If I do extra biking how much of a substitute would It be to running and how much running fitness would I lose.

Excellent question. From what I've been able to read on the subject (admitted tri-noob here), if you keep the total TIME of your weekly aerobic workouts the same, you shouldn't lose much.  You'll probably lose some running, but it will come back quicker if you're maintaining the aerobic base.  So if you currently run 3x a week for an hour at a time, say, split those 3 hours up among biking and swimming (2 biking, 1 swimming?) and you'll be able to maintain your base.  Then, when you get back running, you'll be able to regain any lost fitness pretty quick, because that base will still be there.  Make any sense at all?

Ask your doc or a sports PT if aquajogging is contraindicated with your specific injury - it's non-load bearing and you will reap more as far as maintaining fitness.

Just from my personal experience, I would not count on maintaining any of your running fitness if you are not running.  All that the cycling will help with, other than increasing your cycling fitness, is a bit of general aerobic fitness that can carry over to running.  Did your doctor have anything to say about running in a pool?  I know that a lot people have used pool running as an alternative when injury keeps them off the road.  You might also ask this question in the 'Injury & Health' forum.

Sorry about your knee! How much running fitness you'll lose depends on how much of a running base you already had and how much time you'll have to take off.

Biking doesn't really sub for running.

Depending on your type of knee injury, you may want to look into water running (aqua jogging) which can be an excellent substitute for running.

Azzuri, I did for 2 months, but then even the anti anti inflammatories stopped working and the size of my knee got bigger, so I gave In and went to the Doc.

Never push through an injury, and it's always wise to seek medical advice first.

There's a function at the top right that says Search Forums ... if you click on it and use "aqua jogging" as your terms, you should come up with some good stuff. Maybe also try aquajogging and "water running."

Good luck!

If after consulting with your Doc that you do in fact need to give up running for a bit take the opportunity to become a better cyclist and swimmer. I have been in a similar position giving my achilles tendon a break from running for the past couple of months and have focused intensely on cycling and swimming and have made great strides forward in those disciplines.

X2.  I ran all of 26 miles in June due to a injured calf and I am still having issues running.  Bike has been fine and I did not increase my bike mileage so maybe that is part of it but running is total suckage right now.

x2 on aqua-jogging, though it takes some getting used to, and I at least found it extraordinarily boring.    There are others things that are better (than biking) for approximating running, but are a little harder on the knee than pool running (such as Nordic track, elliptical).  Ask your doc.  But, there's no perfect substitute for the real thing.  Good luck with the recovery.

AQUAGJOG!!!!!!!!!!

Feel free to PM me with any questions.  It'll help you maintain RUN fitness better than biking, elliptical, etc. It's not boring, I've done plenty of aquajogs in the 2- to 2.5-hr range. If you do workouts, the time flies. I find the treadmill (even with music and/or TV) a lot more boring than aquajogging.

I guess don't count on it, but it may help.

Here's my anecdotal evidence.

I ran a 10km after training. Next year, I did not run once, bike alot and ran the same 10km race and got a time within 1 minute of the time I ran when training. So I still had some run fitness. However I hurt a lot more after it, than I did the year before.

I found using an ellipical trainer was a good substitute for running and actually helped the knee problems I was having that was preventing me from running.

Ditto, not cool.

I'm about to start back running after laying off for about 2 weeks. I know it's not as good as running, but I'm going to try the eliptical machine.

Aerobically, running gives you the most bang for time invested. Cycling will help maintain a base, but sad to say you will quickly lose any speed you had. The good news is that if you maintain a good base on the bike and stay healthy, when you return to running you may be surpised to find how quickly you can build up to your previous level.

Sounds like a great opportunity become a monster rider and swimmer.

AQUAGJOG!!!!!!!!!!

x2. I remember that in highschool while my team practices in the pool, a track coach trains a track runner to aquajog with the team in order to (from his point of view) to minimize (or lack thereof) impact on the shins and knee. This said track runner has qualified for our state and I believe placed in the best 5 in his race. Ideally, he used to aquajog for 1.5 to 2 hrs every other day as part of his training. IMHO, it definitely helps since water serves as a resistance without so much as straining the knee. Highly recommend.

And you can pee without having to leave to a bathroom, like on a treadmill.

/chuckle. so true. just make sure there's enough water consumption as not to discolor and be obvious in the water when the deed is done.
