Subject: 50m vs endless pool

I am signing up for a swim membership at either the Y or local gym.  The Y has a 50 meter pool w/ 8 lanes and the gym has 2 endless pools that aren't used very often, especially the time I would use it.   Membership costs are relatively the same (close enough that its not a factor) and both are just as convenient.

 So which would you choose?

Is this a trick question?

Would you rather only run a treadmill?  Bike on a stationary?

Hehe I am putting a Swimex in my house.... The convienence will rock. But then we have no YMCA or local gym or well anything so ya. I would go with the YMCA probly if I were you due to having more options, raquet ball etc. I would also recommend swimming in the endless pool before making up your mind. I think the water stream is somewhat narrow in those, so you have to "aim at the water jet." Mine is side to side current so that makes it easier. But again for me it is an only option... well the lake is 55 F and dropping so it is at least a much warmer option and closer than 50 miles away.

I would definitely pick the 50 meter pool. Why would you want to swim on a treadmill?

I'd rather swim in the river or lake, but it'll be frozen soon enough. But, I preferred the lake and river over the pool I had use of this summer.

So your saying doing flip turns every 50m is better than continuous swimming like OWS?

BTW, thanks to all in advance for your advice

Do you plan on continuous swimming for every swim workout?   If so, the endless pool would be fine I guess.  Flip turns aside, the lap pool offers the option of a variety of workouts.

I'd go with the 50 m... during the summer our masters swim changes the pool to that and it is so sweet.

I can't speak for the endless pools since I've never been in one, but I"m curious how you would get feedback on your stroke, or if swimming in one is different since you are trying to stay in that stream, or on your catch phase of the stroke how different it would be... I guess you could do your interval sets on a time basis instead of distance

Pool, and open water when its warm enough to do so.

The continuous pool really hinders your stroke mechanics as the water is pushed over you instead of you pulling through it.  It also inhibits your ability to establish pace, you learn to keep up but never really get a feel for the water.

Total immersion chapter 13 addresses the use of continous (for any interested readers out there)

If all else is equal go with the pool!

Good luck!

Just to throw in a wrench...

I would be wary of the local Y.   I ended up canceling my Y membership in favor of a much more expensive Lifetime membership (and a 60 foot pool, by the way). I couldn't deal with the kids, water aerobics, busy lanes, etc, at the Y.

Is there a third option?  Can you try each out?  Regular pool is obviously the right choice, it's the Y part that pains me.

X2

Isn't this a no-brainer?  And, it's a 50m pool to boot.  Many of us, myself included, would love the opportunity to train in a 50m pool.

Go for the pool. You can touch-and-go instead of flip turns, but the endless pool would be running at a steady rate. In a pool, you can sprint when you want to sprint and glide when you want to glide. As mind-numbing as counting laps can be, I can only imagine the dull drudgery of keeping pace with the spigot. If you're feeling strong, you'd have to stop, break rhythm, and turn up the current. I would do an endless pool, or a tether, if that was the only option, but ONLY if it was the only option.

Me too!  However, I've thought of getting a Fastlane for the garage in the winter, but just too much $$$.

My vote - the pool

The swimspa I am getting has a program for interval work, you can do a speed workout with up to 9 diffent speeds per workout and run different workout patterns. So you warm up at 1.5 mph for 10 min, then get into a grove at 2mph or whatever for 5 minutes then go wherever you want from there and drop a cool down at the end. It has 99 settings up to 4 mph in equal gradations. Anyway I will put a post up once I get it and try it out. It sounds like fun to me, but it won't be OWS. But then there will be ice on the lake in a month or so, brrr.

Using the mph of the water and time swimming you can calculate distance based on the speed settings. I am not sure how sophisticated your gym's swimspa is.

For you I would think the access would be key and the feel (like to do flip turns or don't, get boored easily or don't, like to just get into a grove and go forever or like the feedback of the end of the pool). It all comes down to your preferences.

While in the Navy I had access to numerous 50 meter pools and they rock!  Now all I have is 25 yd vs 25 meter pools, some even less than that.  An endless pool would get boring very fast, ask my neighboor who has one!  I like mixing up my swim workouts and if only I could find a 50 meter pool.  An added benefit for me is the social aspect of swimming, and I can't avoid at times competing with people in other lanes.  This is a great way to build speed and endurance.  Also, many tri's have mass swim starts, and you need to get used to having others swimming around you.  As difficult as it may be to share a lane with multiple swimmers of verying ability, it is excellent training for a tri.

Also, make sure you verify the Y TRULY has a 50 meter pool, as I have even asked lifegaurds who thought it was a 50 M pool when it really was not.  Its a sad truth..

Ooo, I would much rather have access to the 50m pool.  We're always saying on here, "Train like you race."  I think the conditions in the 50m pool would be more like a race.

as i kid i grew up in a 50 meter pool, then as a teenager went to a 25 meter pool (diving pool) and now i swim in a 25yd pool (sucks), 50 meter pool all the way, just the fact that the endless pool bring up so many questions im sure you'd hate after 4 weeks, instead a real pool, is just water, no jets, no streams, no settings..... blah blah

I have swum in an endless pool during a swim lesson as it allows them to video you easily but they are not nice to swim in. The current is fairly narrow and as the speed increases becomes very turbulent so messes with your nice smooth stroke.

Advantages of them are you do notice when your form is bad as you get pushed to one side or suddenly move backwards so they encourage good technique. Also no need to keep stopping for turns so more like an OWS in that you cant have a quick couple of breath rests each lap.

I agree with most of the above though I would love a 50m pool to train in so go for that. much easier to guage your progress as well as you build up distance.

I swim in a 50m pool and as many lake swims as I can get. I much prefer the lake swims. I feel like I am cheating with flip turns and that the distsance does not translate to OWS. I have not had the chance to swim in an endless pool so I cannot say for sure.

I would think you could change your stroke just as easy in both and adjust the flow if you want to to intervals or something. With all that in mind I would rather have the endless pool. You can set up the mirror and work on good form which is a plus. Not to mention not sharing a lap lane. Unless you are going to be doing races that or pool swims.

Also, don't be suprised when the pool is NEVER set up for 50 Meters but instead is set up crossways for 25 Meters all the time! This drives me crazy!!
