If you're in Madison you can sign up in person, standing in line.

Volunteer at the race the day before. Your name will be put on a list where you can register early Monday morning. From what I understand.

That's my plan!

X2. Madison's volunteers are amazing - so volunteering there I think would be a blast.

Plus, as a result of the awesome volunteers and so many other factors (the course is awesome), it is definitely worth it to make a weekend out of it and volunteer and then get to sign up in person.

Good luck!

It made it online last year and likely will this year due to the economy, but it's a very popular race and always sells out fast. I got in by volunteering and signing up in person, but when I volunteered I didn't know we would get priority sign up until I got there. I did it to experience the race and see what I was in for so if you're close enough and have the time to spare, I can't recommend it enough. I learned so much from that experience and it will make race day that much better.

From my experience at IMAZ, your name is not on a list.  You just wear your volunteer shirt from the previous day.

I was watching IMWI this year and almost laughed when it sold out in about 20 minutes. My guess is if you get in line in person, even without volunteering, you'll get in for next year.

They created a list at IMWI due to people wearing others' shirts and/or signing up to volunteer and then not showing up. You had to check out at the end of a shift in order to make the list. I think it's pretty sad that people would cheat the system with fake volunteering. The lines were long but everyone who was there on site got in so it's just about being patient and waiting.

Yup... I volunteered (with LazyMarathoner!) last year and they came around after the shift with a list asking if you were signing up for next year. Last year I said "no" but this year I'm saying "YES!"

This would be my guess too.  It seems like IMO, that the economy crapping out has made IM registrations stay open longer than normal over the past year or so.

Here is the deal.  There are 3 of us from MS wanting to do IMWI next year.  Realistically what are our chances for getting in the race online if we are sitting at the computer waiting when the bell rings.  Our other options incluce IMLou and possiblly IMFL but we would rather do the MOO.  We could pick an independent also but wanted to do a branded event for our first IM.

Last year everyone on site got in and there were slots open online if I recall.  The nice thing about volunteering, besides helping out and getting psyched, was that the volunteers got to go in and sign up first.

That's nice if we lived in Wisconsin, its a long drive and expensive flight from MS.

x2 From Alabama.

So my plan is to be sitting at the computer when registration opens with credit card in hand.  I'll try to get in on-line.  If I don't make it in, then my fall back plan will be IMKY.  Based on 2009 sell out, that will still be open.

IMWI '09 will be my first.  I signed up myself and my hubby online.....typed fast and had us both in within 10 minutes.  It was closed in 16 minutes online.

IMLP has not gone online in the past few years- you had to be onsite. But, this year things have changed a bit. The economy, of course, but also- you now have to pay onsite. You used to be able to get a voucher, then sign up with the $$ a few weeks later. Now, you give them your cash/check/visa onsite. This is another factor in why races aren't selling out onsite. This is only my opinion, but seeing as how IMLP went online, I believe IMWI will be the same.

I was thinking of volunteering and signing up Monday, but the travel costs more than going the community fund route.  A ticket to O'Hare for that weekend is double what it cost me to fly there in June.  Go figure.

Their is a lot of stuff to fill out online prior to hitting submit.  I'd make sure I was online a few days earlier and already have an account set-up.  Then the day of, be online about 10-15 minutes earlier than the registration time and start trying to submit.

For IMFL last year this worked for me.  I was in 5 minutes prior to their official opening time and the race sold out 5 minutes past their time.

OK, so since this will be my first IM I am going to try and sign up for...do you just go to the IMWI website and register ahead of time?  I REALLY want to do this one as it is a halfway point between Minnesota (relatives) and Illinois (me) and we could make a family reunion out of it.  I will be in California when the sign up opens so I have to do it online...also if it does sell out is the other route a sponsership/charity slot?  Does whoever sponsers you get to write it off for charity?  Just trying to think of options in case I get shut out!!

Thanks for any replies.
