So I'm interested in doing ironman FL next year.  I see that ironman Lake Placid sold out 'on site', which I assume means that you had to be there for the 2008 event to get in to the 2009 event.  Does anybody know whether IM FL works the same way?  More generally, any suggestions for getting in?

There's been a lot of discussion regarding this in the Iron Distance Forum.

Short answer is: The best way to make sure you'll get in is to be in Panama City Beach the day after the race.

And, if you're going to go, you might as well volunteer.  The volunteers get a free t-shirt and get to register before everyone else the day after the race.

After IMLP I bet a lot more races sell out on sight. Word will spread and everyone will start going to the races to sign up at the bigger races anyway. I know I am but I was already planning on Volunteering as a learning experience anyway.

Wonder if this is a deliberate ploy of NAS to get more volunteers?

I was dismayed when I logged on the LP website at noon and saw that they sold out completely onsite. I wasn't going to sign up this year, but I am always dreaming of it. Now my dream is going to cost me alot more money, because I'll have to travel there two years in a row. I think it's extremely unfair, and locks out anyone new from being able to try an IM. I think they ought to reserve a percentage of the spots for online only.

I'm waiting for the day when you need to be on site to sign up to VOLUNTEER for the next year so that you can get in the line to sign up as a volunteer for the NEXT year after that!! Tongue out

I already have started talking about volunteering at LP next year so I can sign up for '10.  It is a must do if I want to get into the race.

Just to preface that I have NO plans to sign up for an IM in the next several years, if ever, and I don't normally respond to any threads having to do with IM because I'm not NEARLY at that level.

But I think it's kind of annoying that you have to go there to sign up for one. I mean, that's expensive and for a lot of people, maybe not possible, esp. since dropping several hundred bucks on registration may be all they can really afford. I know most triathletes have the cash, and I understand that they probably want truly committed people signing up which is why they make it difficult, but you can still be committed to the sport and not be able to afford to fly to and stay in FL, AZ, etc...the only one I could get to on the cheap is LP (since my parents only live a couple of hours away from there), and there is NO WAY IN HELL I'm ever gonna do LP.

Here's a newsflash: LIFE ISN'T ALWAYS FAIR!

Its not likely to change either because NAS, like any other business with a highly successful product is in the driver's seat.  Supply and demand baby, supply and demand.

Unless you are really wanting to volunteer.  I'd look into two other options. The community fund.. It might be cheaper to not fly down, get a room with a min. night stay.

the other is the two 70.3 races that NAS puts on. In california and florida that you can get slots for the regular IM races.

Yes, I understand that - but still. It's kinda lame.

If you want to gamble with online registration, and then you lose out... although it hurts the piggy bank you have at least a few days to get a community fund slot. Happened to me for IMLP just like that, and I'm mostly over it, though it hurt the first time someone mentioned to me that I would be paying $10 mile on race day.

Looking at the IM situation as a businessman. I would raise the price of entry. If the supply of slots can not be increased, and demand exceeds supply, the price goes up. Don't know if all the community slots sell out, but this is also a good indication that people are more than willing to pay a high price for entry. Look for $1000 entry fees in the near future and the return of on-line entry, with a possible discount for those who volunteer.

But if they have to replace the current "forced volunteers" with paid workers think about the impact on margins...

Also think about the new spin to potential host venues. Not only do you have 1200 Triathletes plus family, typically at a bad time of the year for your tourism, but you now also get 200 or so "volunteers" who have typically been locals who will now travel interstate and fill hotel rooms, buy dinners etc.

Well, I don't mind volunteering. Glad to.  I don't live that far from the IMFL venue, so it isn't that expensive to get there for me, and I have family in the area.

I can barely justify the normal entry fee to my wife.  I certainly can't afford the community fund fee, even if I could convince my wife to plunk down that kind of money for a race.  As someone said, it's their race -- they can do what they want.

Anyway, thanks for all the helpful replies.

And that's my gripe about the IM-brand name. As much as I want to do another race, I'm not even going to try to justify to my wife that we need to coordinate a vacation this year with registration for a race next year.

As a business, NAS is in the perfect situation.  With the race selling out, you guarantee that you make your profit.  Why would they not sell when they have the chance.  In reality if it makes some people mad, it doesn't matter because they are full.  The only time it could impact them is if they don't sell out and then those people who are mad may not come back to sign-up.  And that is unlikely to happen.  Maybe a better idea is to continue to expand the races.  I know they added IM - Cozumel.  Maybe we'll see some new sites opening in the future.  Seems that they could use some more sites in the mid-west.  Maybe IM - Austin or IM-Lincoln (Nebraska),  How about IM - Chicago?

With that being said, I probably will not ever race that long, so....

See you there as a fellow volunteer--I'll be buying my tickets to fly sometime this week or next using some "points" I have.  I figure it'll be a fun vacation, I will get to cheer on several of my BT friends, and I get an idea of what to expect for the next year, and that's important to me.  I've already volunteer signed up online too, don't forget to do that!

The international expansion is interesting. There is always the classic case study presented in MBA programs debating the 'brand extension vs. brand dillution' dilemma. It is my understanding that the international IM don't sell out. But if you are trying to get as much exposure for your advertisers and sponsors, a world venue is important. Entry fees and volunteers are an important aspect of the IM race, but the money comes from corporate sponsors. The more desirable or prestigious an event becomes, the easier it is to get big sponsors, and the more they are willing to pay. The threat to NAS is not other events, or high entry fees, or people disgruntled because they can't get in, it will be when doing an IM event no longer is seen as a 'life goal'. It is imperative to them to keep up the hype, and image of an 'ultimate achievement' that, not only takes an unbelievable amount of training and preparation, but to enhance that by also requiring a rigorous effort just to get in.
