Subject: 3 Bikes a Week. Is It Enough?
Currently, I'm doing

3x runs
3x bikes
4x swims

A week. My achilles heel in triathlon is definitely the bike. So, I'm just asking, would it be better to change the 3 bikes to 4 and the 4 swims down to 3 for the week?

Also, where do you think I should fit in the extra bike? Here's my typical week.

Mon-
Swim morning
Run afternoon

Tue-
Swim morning
Bike afternoon

Wed-
Run afternoon

Thur-
Swim morning
Bike afternoon

Fri-
Swim morning

Sat-
Run morning

Sun-
Bike morning

I could do it on the wednesday, friday or the saturday. Which day would you do if you were in my situation?

Thanks.

There is nothing about what intensity, so I would not say "Make Friday your hardest ride" ...... but I do agree to add one on Friday if you could swing it, and lose the swim if you can only do one workout that day.

I'm guessing the swim is your strength????

Make the Sunday bike ride a long one - you don't have to race it, or go all out. Just spend a couple of hours in the saddle. With the bike, you can train past the distance required of your races without fear of overuse/injury - obviously make sure your bike is fit properly because sure, improper position could cause knee pain, etc, but in general, a 2+ hour bike ride, if you only do sprints, is going to help more than it'll hurt. It's not like running.

They say, "Train your weakness, race your strength," so adding more biking would definitely be a good idea. Friday looks good.

Can you commute to work by bike?

For me, I can make more time gains on the bike than I can on the swim so I would add another bike session and sacrafice a swim.

Agree with Rick that you don't mention intensities or specific drills in your workouts, so it's hard to say whether you need another bike day. However, if you're looking to add one in:

Seems the easiest fix (if you don't want to lose the swim) would be to make Wednesday's run your "long" run, turn Saturday into a brick day (bike/run), and then have Sunday be a long and/or recovery ride. That gets you 4 bike days.

If the bike is your weakness, you should train it.

Enough for what?  Sure, bike more if that's your weakness, but the question is kind of hard to answer without knowing what your goals are.

I think 3 a week is sufficient, but if you are to just do three you need it to have a substantial amount of intensity.  The year I made my greatest gains in cycling was when I had three group rides a week.  At one point or another group rides tend to be close to all out efforts.  If I was purely a rider, obviously I would be hitting the bike a whole lot more but would be doing a significant amount of it at lower speeds.

Maybe.

To make improvements, you need to increase your training load, which is a function of duration, frequency, and intensity. Since cycling is low-impact, you can get by with just a few large sessions and still get a sizable training load.

Why don't you just add a bike day while keeping the swim. That way, you get better at both That Wednesday looks good for the extra bike. That way, you are still keeping an easy day on Friday, but can do longer bikes and runs on the weekends.

Hard to say.... Your logs don't show us how long and at what intensity your current workouts are. How many miles per week are you riding now, and what distances are you training for?

My goals are to race 2-3 olympic races in the upcoming summer (New Zealand). I have done a few short races so far and always seem to get passed by people on the bike leg, really I just want to get better because the most time gains I feel can be made on the bike when I race.

My swim workouts are anywhere from 4-5km and are a mix of drills, freestyle and speed work. I swim in a squad so just whatever the coach tells us to do.

My runs are currently 3x 40 minute (I started at 30min and am building up 5 mins every week until I get to 70-80 minutes)

My bikes are currently 1x hills (30-40km), 1x medium distance (40km) and 1x longer distance (50km). Every 2 weeks I add another 10km to the medium and long ride and will build up to about a 70km and 80km week.

If I was to add another bike, should I add another longer distance ride, hills or just a light 1-2 hour spin sort of ride?

Thanks.

Sounds like your intensity on all your bike rides is about the same. hard to say on the hills as hills can be ridden at many different intensities.

Your performance on the bike is going to be affected the most by your speed/pace/power at your lactate threshold, so working on raising that, through a variety of means should be a focus of yours.

While adding another low intensity ride as a 4th ride WILL give you additional training load, and will, to a very small degree contribute to increasing your hearts pumping ability (and allow your heart to deliver more oxygen to your muscles) you can get more bang out of your buck by adding some higher intensity to your biking.

Are you doing any HR testing or training on your bike rides, or going entirely by effort (or feel)?

over the next few weeks I will start a thread for anyone looking to increase their funtional power over the winter. I will post suggestions, ways to do testing, sample sessions and if I gather enough interest I'll start a challenge thread and we can make it sort of like virtual group training. Anyone with a power meter or a HR monitor is welcome to join and play cuz I'll post suggestions to train both ways

Is 3 bike sessions a week enough?  Yes!  Take a look at one of the Olympic training programs available on this site.  Just adjust it to your needs.

Starting a thread for anyone looking to increase their funtional power over the winter.

I definitely look forward to this. I would like to move my bike along. Smile

Consider me interested.  I avg 20mph over 56 miles and want to bump that up to 22mph over the next year.
