Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I decided to help my wife and two teenage kids get into better shape and adopt a more healthy lifestyle. We found a local gym and signed up. They have a variety of classes and since this was our first night, we just picked whatever was available after work/school. The class was called "Body Works" and the description of the class said it was a "total body scupture". I was excited for the family. Before the class my son asked, "Hey day, how come were the only guys in the class?" I chuckled and shrugged. I figured the class would be a piece of cake for a tough ironman like me. The instuctor told us to get steps, dumbell weights, and rubber band jump rope thing. Feeling pretty cocky, I got the heaviest of everything. Oh....my.....gawd! For a solid hour we worked muscles I didn't even know I had. By the time we were done, every muscle in my body was quivering. What a humbling experience! I just thought I was in good shape! ~Mike |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() That's funny. A few years ago, while in the Army, I went to a step aerobics class feeling pretty cocky, too. I could run very well and always scored in the top 10% of unit physical training tests. The instructor told us to get one step for basic, 2 for mid, and 3 for advanced. Guess how many i grabbed...3! I almost didn't finish the 45 minute workout...and I puked afterwards! N00B! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LOL! My wife use to ask me to join her in some of the classes at the Y. I have seen their torture in action, they always make it a point to bring the guys down to their knees begging for mercy! I'd rather do an LT test... |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have been to a couple of body pump classes with my wife. I don't dare put as much weight on as the female instructors...they will KILL you! My conclusion is that women are much better at higher reps and the guys are better at heavier weight and lower reps... That is my story and I am sticking to it. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() In 04 I went to a pilates class with my wife. I literally had to roll out of the bed the next morning, I couldn't sit up. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm not that impressed buy the ladies' classes. Dont get me wrong - they definitely can work hard, and if you are strong, fit guy who can place AG in races but never do their motions, you're going to be in for a rude awakening. However, I find that with 2-3 sessions, I can easily outperfrom the instructor in most endurance-based activities with a good run/bike/swim base. Kind of life going weightlifting at moderate intensity if you haven't done it in months - that'll also humble you, but give it a few sessions, and it's not as big a deal when you're on it regularly. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm a believer in all-around fitness. I hope you (and wife and kids) go back until you can do this kind of workout too. (I might pick out the low step next time.) It's all good.

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I completely hear ya.... my wife is a boot camp instructor/pilates/trainer... her camps scare the crap out of me. Whenever she makes me take them, I'm usually pretty humbled - and sore for a couple of days. She tells me it's good for me though, whatever that means.. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Triathlon, specially bicycling and running is a very one plane(sagittal) oriented movement. You can be very sport specific fit ,but oxygen demands of the muscles that you do not use during running and bicycling(side to side moves) will kill you. That is why being sport specific fit and being healthy is two different things. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Funny, my wife did that to me last summer - signed us up for a twice a week Tae-Bo class. Dude teaching it seriously kicked my arse, but we both had fun with it. I'd go back next summer if she's game. |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Funny I spent the night at the Y taking a Zumba class with my daughter for much the same reason you stated. They need to be active and no soccer this winter. I'm not a dancer type person and sort of inhibited that way. Now we go and wiggle around, doing all this crazy stuff...I feel a bit like a klutz but they love it. I pick out the athlete folks vs the girls that took dance lessons as the type move differently. Good news my husband and youngest daughter want to go. I started going to Pilate classes and found it challenging but not in my core more in my legs which puzzled the instructor...especially the outside part of my thigh below my hip. I was quite surprised not to wake up the next day wicked sore..I wasn't sore at all. Thing I realized up and down movements I can do as we do that all the type s/b/r the movements that have circles or outside the plane of movement we do is much harder for me. These classes are humbling...but fun way to do stuff with my kids. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh yeah, when I go out and visit my fiance's family I usually take a Body Pump class at his sister's studio. She is a big time runner and also teaches all those Body Pump classes. I always feel like jello when I leave, and I'm using like 1/3 the weights she uses (and I have a prettty well developed upper body). This time she schooled me AND she was pregnant with triplets at the time. Now THAT is humbling. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This is all Sooo funny, and yet Sooo true! Like the guy above me posted, I think for most women they jsut adapt better at lighter weights/more reps. Several months back, during my recent comeback to weightlifting ... and a time in which I was reaching all time new highs as far as how much I could lift, I stayed after a regular aerobics class one day to do the 30 minutes of "body scuplt" class that came afterwards. Okay, so here is this 250 lb. dude who just the other day was bench pressing 10 reps at 205, 8 reps 225, 6 reps 245, 4 reps 265, 2 reps 285, and a 1 rep max at 300 lbs ... but when working out with 7.5 lb dumbells in this class, my arms turned to rubber and I wasn't able to finish. I had to go change out for the 5 lb. weights and then eventually just use my arms only ... no weights at all in my hands!!! Also, during the aerobics class, I have no problem at all keeping up as long as we are doing straight forward and back movements, hopping, bouncing, etc ... but as soon as they throw in the lateral and side to side stuff ... or moves that require suddent stops and starts, etc .... I get totally put to shame .... Anyhow ... it may be just more sport specific and cause I'm not trained in those particular movements and for endless reps of weights .... but I still think that the way women's muscles respond to light yet repeated reps is different than for guys.... for one thing .. I have about an extra 10-15 lbs to move just in arm mass alone ... that should count for something ... don't ya think?

Welcome to how I feel doing triathlons. I can rock it out in those types of classes and I try to run a few miles and I'm slooooow. Good for you! Especially initiating getting the whole family involved. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tonight I decided to do Yoga for the first time ever. My friend came over and brought his p90x ( which he is doing... i'm not ) and we did the "Yoga X" for 1:30. The first half is .. vinyasa yoga?... lots of warrior poses and leg stuff... then the last half is balance moves and some ab/core stuff. It was quite a workout and i have new respect for people who can contort their bodies in some of those ways. i think i am going to incorporate it sometime once a week into my routine. That along with the ab ripper x 15 minute session from the program would be great total core stuff. -andrew |
