Subject: Women's Hockey Silver Medalists

Caught the very end of the gold medal game last night and the medal ceremony.  As the U.S. women were having their silver medals presented to them, it seemed like almost all of them looked significantly peeved, angry, sad, disappointed.

I'm not quite sure what I think about that.  On the one hand, they're silver friggin' medalists in the Olympics and that's not too shabby, so they might have at least been a little more grateful and gracious.  On the other hand, they had just lost the game, which had to be a huge disappointment for them and they didn't really have a chance to process those emotions before the medal ceremony.

What does COJ think?

I noticed the same thing.  They looked like they didn't want to be there.  Can't say that I blame them, though.  That is one of the difficulties of having the medal ceremonies immediately following the game.  There is not time for the brain to process the loss and reach the point of being grateful for the opportunity to have competed at that level.

They played well throughout the Olympics and should be proud of the results that they achieved.  It's okay to be disappointed that you lost but should enjoy the experience.  (I would imagine that they will when they look back.  Probably just a bitter pill at the moment.)

If you look at the talent gap between the Canadians/Americans and the rest of the world in women's hockey... it is a tremendous gap.  So much so in fact, that the chairman of the IOC is talking about dropping women's hockey from the Olympics unless other countries step it up a bit.  The Canadians and Americans beat everyone else by a combined 86-4 at this tournament.

The Canadians and Americans were absolutely expected to get to the gold medal final, without a shadow of a doubt.  So I can understand why the team members do not view a silver medal as much of an accomplishment.

It'd be like the Colts and Saints in a league with all the ACC football teams, and whooping it up because they finished second in the league.

wgraves7582 - 2010-02-26 11:02 AM The lady announcer from canada said it right - they lost their last game.  Bronze still won their last game.  Big difference!

Plus they lost to the Canadians - their rival.  Sorry Opus/Jeng/Calgary Runner and all the other canucks out there but you are not our friends come Sunday when we play for the men's gold!

Even though you guys are going to win - we awoke the sleeping lion - watch out!

This is what I attribute it to. They just lost the game.  these are top level players who are driven to win so it would be hard to be happy right away.

I love the trash talk that CTV played before the game!  They really are rivals. Whoa.

What is the problem with their celebration?  Who cares if they did it on the ice, in an empty arena, instead of in the locker room.

Much ado about nothing.

I think the bigger issue is that at least one of the girls on the team is not of legal drinking age. If she was indeed drinking and they have pictures of it, I see at least her being sent home.

I think the bigger issue is that, in at least one picture, I saw a girl drinking a Coors Light. You just won a gold medal, drink something better than that!

Actually, the IOC is ticked they took it on the ice.  And what difference would it have made if she were in the locker room.  Again, much ado about nothing.

Oh, and the under age drinker, turns 19 in a month or so, legal age where they were, but legal age where she is from is 18.  In my mind, innocent mistake.

Now!  If you want to talk about the "taste" of what they were drinking, I'm all for that.  Good lord.  COORS LIGHT?!?!?!  BLECH!

They won the gold so let them celebrate.  They were smoking Cubans also (from the rumor mill of course I have no substantiated proof of this claim!)

The last place I am going to blast someone for drinking under age is at a Gold Medal Celebration.

Cubans are legal in Canada.  But smoking inside is definitely not ...

I actually like most of pictures. It's really nice to see them enjoying themselves and being a little silly.

I think you are right.  I just went back and looked at the shots.  When I first saw it, it looked like the Silver Bullet.  But now, I looked again and there is a huge Maple Leaf on them.  I think they are Molson Canadian.

Better choice.  Not the best, but much, MUCH better.

The majority of the girls were drinking something with a big maple leaf on it, which I assume is Molson. I only saw one girl with a Coors Light. I just thought that it was funny.

Sadly, the only two types of beer you can buy at all Olympic venues is either Canadian or Coors Light.  I don't like either, but I suppose Canadian is the lesser of two evils.  GM Place - $8 for a 14oz beer...

At least the girls didn't have to drink the draught that Joe Public have to.

I personally could care less that she was drinking, and if she had done it in the locker room or back  the Olympic Village there probably wouldn't have been an issue. But when you are photographed doing something against the law in the host city, intentional or not, there is a good chance that you are going to be sent home.

I personally don't are, I just think that is what will end up happening.

That is part of the issue......What some of them were doing was deemed Illegal.
Personally no issue with celebrating like they did, but there is some of that act like you've been there as well.
Some of these girls have won silver/gold medals for the last 4 Olympics.... Optics are a big thing.
