Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think a lot of the fear of dogs (same with snakes) that I hear about is unfounded. The thing that actually got me to thinking about starting this thread was two really big dogs that chased me a really long ways in Madison Sunday while their owner was screaming at them to stop (like they were really going to listen. My point is while dogs chasing bikes in the country is fairly common. Dogs actually biting a cyclist is very rare. Since there are so many people on this site, I thought it would be a good way to show how rare it is that someone actually gets bitten. I bet more people wreck while being chased than actually get bitten. Who on THIS SITE has actually been bitten by a dog while riding their bicycle? I would also bet that we have a lot more broken collarbones on here than we do dog bites. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've been chased by many dogs- mostly on the Bud plant ride in Cartersville. Never been bit until this year when we were riding the new route (65) and got lost. We missed a left hand turn around 40 I think and came to a 'T' in the road with no markings. As we were circling in the road trying to figure out where the turn might have been, a pissed off chihuahua came sprinting out from under a car parked in the driveway we were next to. It was howling/screaching like it was possessed and on the downstroke of my pedalstroke, he latched his jaws onto the side of my foot/shoe. It was more funny than anything b/c my foot (size 14) was almost as big as the dog. True story. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have been bitten twice..once a nip and the second was a nasty encounter. I have learned the water bottle squirt to the face just as they get close stops them dead in their tracks. I agree somewhat the harder you try to get a away the harder they try to get you. If you keep your head, you can avoid a bite. However, you never know when you will get the mad dog that is determined to get some, thus the general fear of the attack. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() When dogs come running, it is not being bitten that concerns my but the dog getting under one of my wheels. Their herding instinct tells them to go for the points that touch the ground, which naturally draws them to either wheel ... and if it is the front then you are in trouble. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have not but unfortuately found out a very experienced female cyclist was bitten by a pit bull on the back of the left thigh area very recently (she posted a nasty facebook picture). I'm assuming it was out in the Cumming area. I have encountered way too many country dogs in that area and cartersville. I cannot understand people who do not care, not only about the safety of others, but their dogs! They are running into the roads. I guess they feel they are disposable, which is sad. I like to get my training done quickly so I prefer to just ride out my door through Vinings/Buckhead and avoid the canines. Given the responses, it appears it might not be so rare.. Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Interesting ... I have been riding a modified version of the Reality Bikes ride through the greater Cumming area over the last two years and have yet to encounter a problem, much less alone have I seen a pitbull. There used to be one or two yappers (including a chow off of Mount Pisgah) but nothing of significance. In Cartersville, however, some of the dogs are storied ... for instance, the freakishly fast three-legged dog that hides behind the bushes and then springs out on the old 67 mi route. Hope your friend recovers well. That said, I'll take the risk of dogs over that of texting drivers in the Vinings/Buckhead area any day! Shoot, it is often not safe to walk around there much less alone ride ... bboston88 - 2009-08-06 10:38 AM I have not but unfortuately found out a very experienced female cyclist was bitten by a pit bull on the back of the left thigh area very recently (she posted a nasty facebook picture). Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My husband. And because it happened while we were riding through an Indian reservation (in AZ) and no one would own up to owning the dog, he had to go through a month of rabies shots to the tune of several thousand dollars (even with insurance, rabies shots in our area are only available at the ER so you get whacked with ER fees every time). |

They are running into the roads. I guess they feel they are disposable, which is sad. ..... I do not think that is the case with country people. Many of them care VERY much about their dogs. It is not that they do not care. They do not feel that you are in danger nor their dog. They just have a differnent paradigm than people raised in the city. Your animal gaurds your house. If he is on a chain, he can not guard your property properly in their opinion. He can bark, but often there is no one there to hear it. My point is that they do not feel, and to a point I agree with them, that their dog is not in danger just because he is chasing you in the road. There is not as much traffic in the country to endanger them. While on the Covington Century last week, Doug and I saw a dog lying in the middle of the road on the yellow line resting. I have seen that several times in rural areas. Maybe we can start a thread about how many dogs get hurt while chasing cyclist. I bet that number is even less than the number of cyclist that have been bitten. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() so if I've never been chased by a dog, does that mean that I haven't been riding enough? All the ones I've seen while riding just watch me go past. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think i've never been chased because the dog doesn't feel like it's a challenge since i'm not going fast enough to give him a good sprint. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Other than the crazy ambush dog on the Cartersville ride, I've never even had a dog chase me on my bike. Running, however, I've been chased a bit. I find that a firm, loud "NO!" (or two) works very well. Most dogs know what "no" means. |

He was even faster then and was VERY sneaky. That spot was hard to get away from him too b/c it was at the bottom of a little, but lenghty rise. I have got to think the reason he has 3 legs now is b/c he finally got hit by a car while chasing someone. |

I have been riding a modified version of the Reality Bikes ride through the greater Cumming area over the last two years and have yet to encounter a problem, much less alone have I seen a pitbull. It was Cheryl (Mrs. Reality Bikes) that got bitten. She was mid-climb... and the dog didn't let go very easily. The fact that she remained upright and continued pedaling with him chomping down on her thigh is a credit to her bike handling skills (and I'm sure the adrenaline didn't hurt). I suspect that her injuries could have been significantly worse had he been able to pull her off the bike. For those of you keeping track at home, this would be one "hit by car" and one "bit by dog" in their household this summer. Oy. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The Fuller Muller household is not having good luck this summer are they?Good thing Cheryl is a Cat 1. Neal, I disagree about the country folks and their dogs. I was born and raised in Ohio so I'm not a city gal. It's a different mentality a lot of times and regardless, letting them run loose is a danger to themsleves, others, and irresponsible in my opinion. I've done several rides and races out there and there's a good bit of traffic on many of those roads. And it only takes one to flatten Fido. But again, that's just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions.... I'm like a dog magnet on those rides, it does kind of ruin the experience when you're paranoid about being perceived as a juicy hotdog. And I seriously never have issues (crazy driver wise) in Buckhead/Vinings as long as you avoid the major roads. Edited by bboston88 2009-08-06 1:34 PM |

I'm like a dog magnet on those rides, it does kind of ruin the experience when you're paranoid about being perceived as a juicy hotdog. That is actually why I started to thread. I am actually pretty surprised at the number of people on here that have been bitten even though it is a very small number so far. When they chase me, I usually slow down instead of speed up, look at them and shout "no" a few times. If the dog seems vicious instead of just following his instincts, I unclip that foot so that I can kick at him just in case. It does not bother me to have them chase me though. Maybe it will if I ever get bitten while riding. I hear people talking about the dogs all the time. I was hoping that this thread might ease the fears of those people, but probably not. I just do not think that 99 percent of the dogs are as dangerous as people seem to think. As I said earlier, I bet a lot more people on here have broken collarbones than dog bites and I never hear people saying they are afraid of breaking their collarbone. (BTW, my broken collarbone hurt a LOT worse than my non-biking related dog bite. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Don't unclip Neal, you can't sprint fast enough unclipped ![]() I just recommend riding like hell and the waterbottle squirt. It's worked for me so far. My 5 minute sprints have reached a max on my powertap on some encounters so maybe I should look at the bright side of this. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Neal this is an interesting topic as I pretty much refuse to ride Cartersville anymore due to the dogs up there. For me it's not about being bitten (although you really never know anymore about some dogs) its the wreck that the dog is going to cause and the broken collar bone or shattered hip as a result. The owner of Outspokin in Woodstock told me about a friend of his who was riding with a group out of Ellijay and crashed as a result of a dog chasing them and shattered his hip. The guy is in his early 30's and had to have hip replacement surgery and of course the rednecks who owned the dog have no insurance and nothing to sue over so this poor guy is stuck with an artificial hip and a pile of medical bills. All because some a-hole couldn't keep his dog under control. And what about that dog on the corner of Cox and Wiley Bridge? He chases us every Wednesday night, sometimes coming out in the road. All it takes is a car coming toward your subdivision on Wiley Bridge and he is toast. |

Now those two about 100 yards down from there that stay in the 6 foot fenced property, I am not so sure about. I get the feeling they may be trouble if they got out. Edited by nealphelps 2009-08-06 3:47 PM |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Are you kidding me? That stinks ... Like I said, though, I have been riding that route for quite some time and have not had a problem ... maybe it is because the faster Cat 1 riders are takig care of them for me. I want you to know that I literally laughed out loud when I read the part about the Chihuahua, I know exactly what dog you are talking about because he runs out into the road to chase me every time I come to that T intersection. His name is Cha-Cha lol, I heard the owner yell his name one time when they happened to be outside watching him chase me. A couple days ago he caught me off guard and almost caused me to wreck, so I kicked like I was kickin a FG in the Super Bowl, but narrowly missed him....oh well. And also I am in the camp where if I am so paranoid about dogs that I can't even enjoy my ride, then there is no point in doing it. Cartersville is notoriously bad for that, but it hasn't gotten bad enough to make me stop riding there. It actually hasn't been toooooo bad lately, except for ol' cha cha of course =) |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have been bitten, right on the butt. It was painful but didn't do too much damage. No rabies shots needed, thank goodness. I do have four permanent teeth marks on my butt though. It shows when I wear a swim suit. However the dog is no issue for yall, I was bit down by Macon. We have a local 26 mile ride that has it's fair share of dogs. So far this year I have been bit and there has been one crash. Other than that all of them seem to be all bark and no bite. I was the unlucky one I guess. |
