I'm racing it. it will be the 4th race of my tri career. doing my 2nd sprint this july 4th then an oly in august followed by miami man.

I'm really excited about miami man because of what I've read about the course and the race directors and such. somewhat nervous about the amount of people kicking and bumping during the swim and the run will be my longest so far.

anything you think a newbie like me should know about the course in general to keep me out of trouble?

Angelo

by the way, that's a sweet looking bike you've got there.

I might do this race too. I rode almost the same bike course at the nautica south beach tri earlier this year. That was a 20 mi bike, and you whent over the causeway bridges 8 times. The bridges are small, and you get alot of speed going down them.
How does the swim start work? Is it really a mass start for 1,000 people?
That would be ridiculous, but thats what the website says...
I am really looking forward to swimming from a island through the bay. Sounds like alot of fun!
Any info from people who have done it would be great!!

The swim is one of the best parts of the race.  Granted, I like swimming and I am biased, but it's clear and not too congested.  You'll be fine.  The bike is FLAT!  No bridges, nuttin.  There can be some wind, but that's it.  The run is ok, not the best IMO.  You go though some back entrance dirt road,  a bit through the zoo and through and around a parking lot.  The biggest limiter will be the heat and humidity, which if you live down here you should know about.  It is a HOT race.  Train for and plan to hydrated and pump your body full of electrolytes.

I am planning on the half again, but haven't pulled the trigger...something is holding me back though - not sure what.  If I don't decide soon, I will get closed out.  It's a great race, though.  Very easy to get around, nice atmosphere and a pretty pleasant course.

Oh, and I never have used a wetsuit in the 3 xs I"ve raced down there.  It's usually right on the cusp and legal.  Jaimie is just a wimp   JK.

The swim is great...it's a crystal lake...the start is in waves and not a mass...and yes!!! use wet-suits....I have done 3 times without it and it's cool and I will use it this year...the bike course is flat flat....but the challenge here are the winds...they usually come from NE...and sometime are gusty like last year...you need to save energy to go back to the Transition Area...cuz...you will have headwinds/crosswinds....and the run is very fun...you will run inside the Metro Zoo looking all the animals....

I recommend to all the people that have not done this one to do the 2 Orientation Bike Rides...2 weekends before the race...these bike rides will be posted in the MultiRace Newletter that they send to all the participants....

I did this race two years ago.  The lake was beautiful - clear and I didn't think it was too cold.  My only advice for the bike is don't be last.  It is a long, lonely ride when you're last, trust me.  It's not so bad being last on the run because all of the crazy 1/2 Iron people are doing their second laps while you're doing your one lap - so at least you're not alone.

I was thinking about doing this race again this year to force me to do something, but it's hard to justify the price tag when I really never train!

This is going to be my first one,

I've done a few olympics before but swam in a pool, this is going to be my first open water experience ever (with this many swimmers)

Yes....I'm a little bit nervous about the water.....I've never swam on a lake before, only on sea, without or with very little waves but the water was crystal blue, never that dark as all lakes are, you never get to see what's at the bottom of the lake....

About the bike, the only thing that troubles me is if there are any U turns on the route, maybe I'm afraid I won't be able to make them right..(.I've fell before turning in U)...of course I know I'm not doing it right...anyway I still have time to practice....

And abuot the running course...that's what I like the most....actually I can't wait....

that first open water swim is pretty intense. part of that is definitely the fact that there's nothing to see looking down into a lake and then when you sight you're looking at a mass of swim caps and churning water. a lot of people talk about the tendency to hyperventilate, which I did in my first race, so staying calm is really important. by my second race I was able to easily control my breathing and had a much better swim. you've picked quite a big race to be your first..good luck to you.

hey velorider....you doing the orientation rides? I'm hoping my work schedule allows me to ride one of them....not sure if I can keep up with you but maybe we can start together =)

Which distance are you doing??? 1/2 Ironman or Internationa??? The 1/2 Ironman doesn't have U-Turn...and the International has 1 U-turn in the mile 11 to go back to the transition area...and...it's not hard...I'm sure you can do it...and...you have plain of time to practice...

I'm racing the international distance. It will be my first try at this distance after having raced three sprint distances this year. I'm very excited about the longer swim and bike... nervous about the longer run.
