OK, since I've had several requests, here is my Ironman tattoo, left bicep below the mermaid. I had thought of putting it on my leg which I'd seen several others do, but I wanted more than just the M-Dot and didn't think the chain link design would look good there. I came up with this creation myself, and a tattoo artist in North Conway NH did the work.

Cool Jeanne...can't wait to see it!

does it hurt?

From the sign at Kelly's Tattoo in Lincoln, New Hampshire; "Of course it hurts...don't ask!"

LOL...depends, some parts of the body are just more sensitive than others. When I had the mermaid done on my shoulder a few years ago, I thought "Man this is gonna hurt big time!" Turned out, that was the easiest one. The Ironman tattoo was not too bad, though the knot work on the underside of my arm caused a few grimaces. You sort of get dulled by the discomfort after a while, and you build up a feeling of resignation that "Oh well, it's not the most fun thing in the world, but it could be a lot worse." I kind of compare the sensation to when you dig at a sliver with a sharp needle. It also depends on the artist, and how aggressively he digs into your skin. Some are better than others at keeping your discomfort level within reason. I have a rose and dagger on my right upper arm and the woman that did it took longer and caused more pain than the guys who did the others. The mermaid was done at Kelly's Tatto ( http://www.kellystattoo.com/) and the M-Dot was done at White Mountain Tattoo.

I have seen quite a few on the ankle too...that was where I was going to have mine!

The one on my boob didn't hurt at all. Soft tissue. The one on my back near my neck? OUCH! Everytime he went over the bone it sucked. I love his work tho. The one on my boob? Well I really don't like it at all.

Nice Tattoo Max.  I've contemplated the M-dot after the 06 IMCDA.

Ummm nope no pics of my Tats. They are pretty personal things. They have a religious meaning so I don't whip em out too much. Don't want to push my faith system or be accused of it in any way. Well the one on my back you can see in most of my running clothes. The one on my boob is my "Wait, you can see the tat, the neckline is too low" water mark

I do like the idea someone mentioned in another thread about a Tri tat tho. I know myself pretty well and that would be something I would wear with pride the rest of my life.

Yes they hurt. The thinner the skin the more it hurts - have fun with the ankle. Also women should avoid tats at certain times of the month when skin might be a little more sensitive.

Anyway it's no worse than a cigarette burn for most people and some people don't seem to mind them at all.

I have found there is a lot of pressure having an IM tat. I showed up at a beginner's tri to stretch out my legs and when I got out of the car this girl said "Oh, I didn't think this was a serious race, maybe I shouldn't be here" I told her I wasn't racing and that it doesn't matter who else is around, just do your thang" After the race, my wife and daughter overheard a conversation where "I was just behind the IM tattoo guy" and "I beat him out of the water, but he got me on the bike" and "I caught him on the run". Before I would just show up and participate, now I feel I have to represent. I've never been fast but have a lot of endurance and most people think if you can do an IM then you must be able to win your AG in just a sprint.  I know I'll get over it but it's weird having all of this attention over a tat.

Max have you had the same experiences?

Tom

Not yet Tom....but trying to get into the Timberman Sprint....hope it doesn't come to that, cuz I couldn't win a Sprint Age Group if there were two people in it and the other guy had 1 leg!

I don't think I have ever seen a woman with an m-dot tat at a local race. I'm not fast, but I have the endurance thing like you...Maybe it will push people to do better becasue they want to pass me "the m-dot chick"? I'm not overly competitve because I can't "represent" and always get my "Chipolte"-kicked in races, well after the swim. The tat is for me to remind myself of how far I've come and what I did. A couple of days ago I signed up for the Great Floridian in October! I'm addicted to the Iron distance races!

I love taking my triathlon accomplishments and utilizing (spelling?) that inner strength in the rest of my life and that is what my tat is all about word.
