Subject: What makes a triathlete?

So a friend of mine and I had a discussion over the weekend about this and I wanted to get some other opinions on the matter:

I completed a super sprint triathlon in August of this year...in my mind that makes me a triathlete...all be it a new, and not nearly satisfied one

My friend says that I will not really be a triathlete until I do at least a full length sprint.

What are other people's thoughts?

IMO, you are a triathlete.  If you think you are then you are, why do you really care what other people think.   But for arguement sack what makes your friend think a sprint makes you a triathlete, I could kind of see where he was coming from if he said you had to do an IM but not a sprint.

Do you train in the three sports of swim, bike, and run?  Then to me, you're a triathlete.  You don't even have to race.  It just makes sense to race if you like stressing over transitions and want to get the buzz of competition!

Train & finish!

Now, I want to do an Olympic Length, so I cannot work on the same day as the race, so I can leave it "all out on the course".  Then I'll feel like a REAL triathlete.  (But those are my feelings, and shouldn't apply to anyone else).

What makes a triathlete? A swim, a bike, a run and a finish line.

Can your friend even define a 'full length sprint'? The term 'sprint' is a very fuzzy idea to begin with. Olympic, HIM, Ironman all have very specific definitions, but there's no standard for what a sprint is.

Her definition was a 1/2 Oly...and I don't particularly care...I know what I have done and am proud of it...I was just curious as to what others thought.

Your friend is just sour grapes.  You're a triathlete whenever you think you are.

If you finish a triathlon, you're a triathlete.  It doesn't matter what distance it is.

What makes a triathlete is the pursuit of three sports in an effort to combine them into a single event for time, or a single feat of endurance.

You can fill in the blanks with whatever those parameters mean to you.

And yes, you're a triathlete. I've known a few that never toed an official starting line, but I'd never tell them they're NOT a triathlete.

"what makes your friend think a sprint makes you a triathlete"

Maybe because that's the distance that she'd done?

If you asked any of my children (5, 9, 11) if they were a triathlete they would each answer yes.  They have each competed in a mini kids triathlon.  They each experienced the stress, competition, and excitement of competing in such an event and in their minds they are each triathletes.  There opinion of this might change over time, but that is how they each feel currently.

tri-ath-lete
n. One who competes in a triathlon.

tri-ath-lon
n. An athletic contest in which participants compete without stopping in three successive events, usually long-distance swimming, bicycling, and running.

both from american heritage dictionary. but, nobody in this thread needed a dictionary to confirm that you are a triathlete.

Let's follow your friend's reasoning for a moment.  This is going to be like giving a mouse a cookie:

You did a super sprint, but it shouldn't "count", because it is too short.

So you do a sprint.

But you know, the standard for any sport is the olympics, so you should really only count yourself a triathlete if you do a standard Oly.

So you do an Oly.

Then your friend says "tons of people do olys.  That's like calling yourself a runner because you did a couple of 10k's.  You should really challenge yourself with a HIM."

So you do a HIM.

Then your friend says the distance most people associate with triathletes is the full IM.

So you do an IM.

But your friend says it shouldn't count.  The only "true" IM is Kona.

So you find a new friend...

There are obviously as many shades of opinion on this subject as there are members here, but I have to take mild exception to this one. I think it's not really fair to make the claim to be a triathlete until you've done all three disciplines in one continuous event. There are other aspects to triathlon besides swimming, biking, and running and it is the discipline of combining the three into a single endurance event (of whatever length) that--from where I sit, anyhow--makes a "triathlete." Otherwise, it is just cross-training...NTTAWWT...

Congrats!! You just followed my brother's thinking about my triathlon career. I can't find a new brother but then again...my brother can't run around the block let alone do ANY distance triathlon!! I do triathlon anyway no matter what they think!! Don't worry about what your friend thinks ...just go out there and kick some asphault!!

kromanowski: YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE (thats in Mike Reilly's voice..the voice of Ironman). Tell your friend to buy a dictionary and look up those definitions described above!!!

The fact that you trained and finished makes you one, IMHO.

In addition, the fact that your friend would choose to crap on your accomplishment in such a way speaks volumes about your friend's insecurities and inadequacies.

I'd ask, what makes a friend?  Good natured teasing is one thing, belittling someone's accomplishment is another.  Maybe when she helps to encourage you rather than keep you down?
