Subject: The thread announcing the New Niagara Falls Half Iron

We are really excited to be giving everyone a sneak peak of the race we believe will become known as the fastest and most iconic Half Iron in Canada. On a fast and flat course, athletes will have an excellent opportunity to race towards a personal best, while friends and family will have plenty to do before, during and after the race. Prepare yourself for one of the fastest and most iconic Half Iron races in Canada.

In the near future we will be posting accommodation and attraction information that will help make this a fantastic and fun-filled weekend for you and your friends and/or family. In the meantime, the Niagara Falls Tourism website has plenty of suggestions and ideas. From family fun at Marineland, Great Wolf Lodge, to the beautiful views of Niagara Falls. There is plenty of adult fun too, with the Fallsview Casino, local outlet shopping centres, and of course the wineries of the Niagara Peninsula. September is also an ideal time of the year to visit and race in Niagara Falls. By the way, the historical average daily temperature and rainfall in September is 22C or 71.6F and 76mm or 3 inches of rain.

We know you will want to understand how this race will work so, for now, we have only added the pages which describe this amazing new race. We will be adding more information in the coming weeks and months with registration scheduled to open in early summer 2013. Race date is September 21, 2014. You can start with the Athlete Guide. The new website is www.niagarafallstriathlon.com

Please let me know what you think.

I read about it in your email newsletter. Sound pretty exciting. The logistics of multiple transition zones will be interesting but sounds really cool.  Awesome later season option!

I was just visiting the website this morning!  Looks to be a great race!

I noticed the website says the swim starts in Welland with T1 being there but that they recommend you stay overnight in Niagara and take the shuttle bus to the start in the morning.

I haven't done too much research but is the start close to the same start for the June sprint in the Welland tri series?

I remember there being a hotel right there on site... just curious.

John should be able to clarify, but it looked like T1 would be the same as the welland tri (or close to it).  I'm guessing they are recommended Niagara falls hotel as there is more for family to do in Niagara and that way you don't have to take a shuttle at the end of your race. (Also a lot more hotel options in Niagara Falls).

Looks similar to the Global 11 layout. I wouldn't do that race again. I hope you guys are on point with the logistics. Last year late September was SUPER cold too.

See y'all in Binbrook.

We have successfully produced two point to point races with two transitions in Collingwood and they were flawless, according to our customers.

I do not want to be harsh but I did hear that things did not go well with 11 Global. I can tell you unequivocally this is in no way close to 11 Global nor will it be as far as race execution. I think if you read the athlete guide you will see we are prepared to make sure you have a great race experience. The 11 Global race finished BEFORE you got to the Falls. Our run course goes by the Falls twice.

Hi Jen,

Yes, we are very excited about this race as well. There is no other that will take you past the Falls twice on the run. We have successfully produced two point to point races with two transitions in Collingwood and according to our customers, they were flawless. I hope you join us for the race,

Hi Marcia,

You can certainly stay in Welland and yes the swim is the same start as in June. The Best Western is across the canal and only 1km from the race site.

The reason we recommend Niagara Falls is twofold.

1) There is a lot more to do in Niagara Falls and we are anticipating very good accommodation rates for athletes. Even without reduced rates there are so many hotels in the Falls that you can fund something to fit any budget. If you stay in the Falls, park at the Shuttle area, take the shuttle on race morning you end up in the Falls after the race about 800m from your car or a few minutes from your hotel.

2) If you stay in Welland you will need to have a friend or family member drive you back to Welland post-race. Given the gap in finishing times 4 hours to 8+ we will not be able to run shuttle buses continually back to Welland. Of course if you have someone to drive then staying in Welland is certainly a good option.

I hope that answers your question.

Thanks for the info John.  All good points.  I have lots of family in the area so lots of options open to me.

Having cycled the area a lot as a teen - it would be a fun adventure to do a HIM on the same roads!

I've long thought Niagara Falls had (all? a lot?) of the requirements of an ironman town- lots of hotel rooms, some touristy things, ample country roads for riding, a history hosting big events, large population base within a day's drive, etc.

Hi Jean, Don't worry the race is not until 2014. Lot's of time to get those injuries healed.

You will most definitely be able to do that. We want this race to be just like our series......athlete friendly and FUN! However, you do have a year to get that swim up to par :-)
