Subject: 2010 race schedule

I'm starting to think about my race schedule for 2010, and wondering what everyone else was considering. In particular I'm wondering about people from southwestern Ontario. Doing Steelhead with Matt and Stef, and Muskoka with Jeff, made those races much more enjoyable, so I'd like to pick races for 2010 where I will see some familiar faces and get to do some training with people prior to the races. Race registration is not likely to fill up soon, but good accomodations for races like Muskoka and Steelhead do fill early.

In June I could do a half (Cedar Point, Welland or Peterborough),  or I could do a couple of sprints (Milton and Leamington). I'm curious about the new races at Cedar Point and Welland, but a little shy about putting a lot of preparation time in for a brand new race and not having any idea if the race will be any good. I have done Milton and Leamington 7-8 times each, and really enjoy both races, so I will probably stick with them.

For the middle of the season I'm thinking about doing Steelhead again (4th time in a row if I'm allowed to count last year's DNF) or doing the Muskoka race. Muskoka usually conflicts with Leamington/Guelph so I have never done it. This year it is being moved to July because of the G8 meeting in June. If I'm going to do the 70.3 in Muskoka this would be a nice tuneup and help me get ready for the hills. However I'm pissed about the DNF at Steelhead and it feels like unfinished business. I'm leaning towards Steelhead again.

Late summer I don't see much to chose from. I had been thinking about concentrating on Olys this year, perhaps doing Guelph, Sarnia and finishing up with Wasaga Beach, however I really do enjoy halfs. So it looks like the Muskoka 70.3 again.

What is everyone else considering?

I agree, its alot more fun when there are people you know at the same races.

These are my goals:

Leamington - Sprint
Sarnia and/or Milton - OLY
Cedar Point - half IM

Although I might add more, depending on what my friends do

I'm doing Welland and Cedar Point.  That gives me an early start to the season and a full 2 months and change between the two halfs.

Remember that both the Welland and Cedar Point races are run by organizations that have a lot of experience putting on tri races.  It's not like it's a private group that is organizing it for the first time.  I'm not expecting significant problems.

I was originally thinking Steelhead again - but because it's only 5 weeks between Steelhead and Cedar Point and it's a bit of a drive - I thought I'd try something closer.

The only problem with this schedule is that I can't do Leamington - it's only a week before Welland....

I might do the Peterborough half as a relay team though - but I'd be swimming - and I can swim 2k a week before a race.

I thought that Cedar Point, Leamington, Welland, and Peterborough were on 4 consecutive weekends in June. Do I have the schedule wrong? I have done 2 halfs in a year a couple of times but doing 2 halfs within a month or doing a sprint right before or after a half is too much for me. This is why I'm not sure what to do in June, too many good races and too little time

I think that Welland will probably be well run, although running a half is a big step up for a race director. Also I thought that the people running Cedar Point had only done one race before?

Ok, my bad. Cedar Point is September 12, the same weekend as Muskoka and Wasaga Beach.

Rev3 put one on this year and have 3 scheduled for next year - with Cedar Point being the last in the series.  I imagine they will have worked out most of the bugs by then.  (I thought they had been around longer ... I apologize.)

Steelhead was a HUGE event for me - all my tris have been small town events.  I'm thinking that with a week between Peterborough and Welland - it will be a smaller field.  Cedar Point is close and flat.  I don't want to do Muskoka at this point - I would have to be mentally ready for that race and I'm not there yet.

Also - neither of these races have qualifying spots - so the fields will be smaller due to that as well.

I had originally planned on doing Steelhead again - but I think I'll try some different races and see...  I won't be able to do any other race in June if I do Welland - but I might do the swim portion of Peterborough (one week before) as part of a team.... Plus - if I race earlier in the year it gets me on an organized training plan with a goal sooner. (Feb instead of the end of March...)

I am a definite for Steelhead and Cedar point. Unsure of the Spring cause it is still up in the air wether or not I am going to Vancouver.

I would like to do Belle River (just to kill the swim demons)
Leamington is usually the 2nd week in June
Ther loaring Tri Saturday, July 17th good tune up for Steelhead me thinks
Rondeau good to shake the cob webs out before Cedar point

I would love to do the Muskoka 70.3 again....maybe 2011 as a tune up for Florida

Sounds like everyone is doing Cedar Point. This is going to be a tough decision, Muskoka is such a great race, and my family really wants another trip to Muskoka. I agree with what Stef is saying about race size, but I actually prefer somewhat larger races. If I'm going to do a half I like the idea of a little more hoopla. With a small half it gets awfully lonely out there at the BOP

BOP lol, yeah right.

I agree, Muskoka is a beautiful place for the race and brining the family.
The only reason I am not doing it is the craziness of sending a kid off to Ottawa the week before and the little ones starting school at the same time. Sandusky is a good over nighter.
Think of all the rides for the kids at cedar point too

It is one of the funnest things to do in the off-season is plan for the next season!

I am definitely in for:

Victoria's Du in May

Would like to do:

Guelph Lake Sprint
Toronto Island Sprint

Haven't fully thought through:

Muskoka - eek! I am still a newb but my fiance has done this one twice and is registered and we have a room booked at Deerhurst so all I have to do is decide to do it and register! Surprised

Anyway, it'll be that or Milton Women's Tri - olympic ... we'll see

There's a whack of running races as well. I am getting dragged into Around the Bay by well-meaning friends, we did a fun 10k where they raffle off a car so we'll probably do that again and then there's A Midsummer Night's Run which I've done the 30k for the last four years. If I do the 15k it could fit in well with HIM training.  But I WILL NOT do a marathon next year!

I have not seen today's Star, but I just noticed this:

http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=2583778;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread

If anyone can win all 3 of the REV3 races (Oly, half and full) they would win $183,000. I'd better start training

Cedar Point might be a much larger race and flashier than we were thinking.

Juniperjen - How did you book the room at Deerhurst? I went to their web site and they are only taking bookings 9 months in advance (up to July)...

There is a 70.3 in Wisconsin that a few of us are looking at. It looks like the run is flat, and the bike is rolling. It's only roughly a 6 hour drive, if anyone is interested, and it is a sanctioned race. We are also thinking about Cedar Point.

Actually I am not 100% sure we did because i didn't book myself. but i think my fiance said he booked a sport suite again. I would call them! because even last year he booked the room at the same time as registering ... we did have to book 3 nights though (at least for this year and i think he said it was the same next year) i haven't looked after the logistics for this at all ...  sorry to be of no help. :S

If you call them you could book the room for Sept. (but can't do it online that far out) but they may be booked up already by now.

Thanks Kats, I had not heard that the Spirit of Racine was now a 70.3. I used to live in WI so I have been thinking about going back for a race. It's too bad that it is the week before Steelhead. I would think that they could spread out races in the midwest a little better than that.

We tried to book a sport suite early last year and everything with a kitchen was already booked. You definately want to book early. We did eventually get a sport suite off the waiting list just before the race.

Why are you thinking about Calgary Matt? We were considering combining Calgary with visiting family in Alberta, but we have other vacation plans now so we are back to thinking about races close to home for this year. I think I'm going to book rooms for Steelhead and Cedar Point before they fill.

I will be joining you guys on stealhead!

I have martian marathon BelleRiver, BelleIsle OYL, Windsor Tri, Steelhead, Muskoka, Cedar Point 1/2 and Detroit FreeP in my book so far.  I won't do all of them (some of them are overlapping!) but still in planning stage...

When will you guys register for steelhead? (or muskoka, or Cedar Point?)

Holy crap, Elvin, that is a lot for a guy who only did short races last year! Is this part of a suicide-by-triathlon plan of yours??

Registration for these races should stay open until almost race day, but you should book accomodations early. The nice places fill early and you can always cancel if you don't do the race.
