Come on Bruce, don't be a square! All the cool kids are signing up for Oliver (how much of her? OLIVER!!!) I think Jonathon is doing it again next year as well as Derek...possibly... |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Haha Oh God... I'm conflicted. I shouldn't be so bloody superstitious but I really am! After my bike broke down at the Squamish tri I decided to spend my bike savings (+ a little extra) for a P2C. I'm actually in love with this bike so I think that makes me a YES for Oliver next year!!! |

No I won't....come on sign up! EDIT - Got some pics of the new ride? EDIT #2 - Everyone go read Derek's Squamish RR....brutal....must have been bad in a previous life...it's the only explanation! Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kelownagirl - 2008-08-04 2:46 PM What's the difference between the Desert Half Iron and the Oliver Half Iron? Is one 'better' than the other? I did the Oliver this year, have never done the Desert. Oliver is pretty flat for the bike course, the only real hill takes about 2 minutes to climb, 50% of the roads are rough asphalt but not a big deal, just a bit jittery. I really enjoyed it and I think that since it sells out each year, it speaks for it's self. |

Hah, not quite...just found that opening my own business is twice as much work as I thought it'd be (if not more). A couple of months of work has helped me start to find my way, though. S'all good! |

Best get to work! DUDE you're ALIVE!! I am SO happy that you have committed to this race!! WHOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO good TIMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looking forward to it! I better start swimming if I want to be able to swim 2 kms by next June, though.
My biggest reason for doing this race is that it still lets me do a tri while I'm 30. I wanted to do one this year (while I'm 30) but this race is a week before my 31st birthday, so I'm down with the O-Town! |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'd like to do the Oliver HIM but it's so early in the season and I was hoping to do an Olympic distance early in the year and a HIM later in the season. Do you think it's possible to make the jump from sprint tri to HIM and skip the Oly? I can do the bike no problem, and I can do the swim distance. If I make my goal of running a half marathon in the fall and themntrain hard next spring, it would be doable wouldn't it? |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kelownagirl - 2008-08-05 6:01 PM That sounds like a pretty good plan. If you just go out there to have a good time and not worry too much about times, you'll do fine - just listen to your body. I'd like to do the Oliver HIM but it's so early in the season and I was hoping to do an Olympic distance early in the year and a HIM later in the season. If I make my goal of running a half marathon in the fall and themntrain hard next spring, it would be doable wouldn't it? As for the Oliver vs. Desert debate, I've done both (Desert in Osoyoos twice) and I like the Desert better for the following reasons: - Better weather - I love the heat and Oliver has been so unpredictable - Better course/roads (bike) -I love the bike over Richter out to Cawston, I love to push myself, plus the Oliver course had a few really bumpy sections that I couldn't stand! - Better course (run) - I enjoy running along the lake and I found that it was really good for spectators (you pass the start/finish like 4 times) - Championships - well can't count on this every year but the last 2 years had the Desert as the National and Provincial long course championships - Timing - I like having the extra month to train Any other specific questions, let me know or PM me! |

Thanks for all the advice! Maybe I should just wait until I get that first sprint under my belt before I start planning a HIM. LOL... |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kelownagirl - 2008-08-06 8:42 AM Thanks for all the advice! Maybe I should just wait until I get that first sprint under my belt before I start planning a HIM. LOL... Noooo...always dream big! Myself I would recommend the Oliver 1/2 over Osoyoos. The Oliver bike and run course is about as flat as you could hope for in a race that distance. The bike course has one short (7%) hill to contend with and that's about the worst of it. Yes weather definitely is quite unpredictable. 35+ deg. one year and then 17 deg. the next with heavy down pour. How ever Osoyoos has been lucky so far as far as temperatures go. It's not unusual for temps to get into the high 30's and if you are a 6+ hr. finisher you're going to suffer out there on the run. Also the bike course does not leave much for the legs to run on. We often see more potential in others than we do in ourselves. I know without a doubt that you could do a 1/2 and enjoy it as well.....just another |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was out on Black Sage Rd. the other day and noticed a sign announcing major road construction for a 10k stretch on Black Sage. Completion is not till fall of 2009 so I don't know how that is going to affect the bike course for next years race. We'll have to keep an eye out on the web site for updates.

Well get on those guys Paul...get that new asphalt laid down BEFORE i get up there for next year, not during! How nice will it be to have that road all soft and flat eh? |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It occurred to me that it'd be a good idea to start looking at accommodations for that weekend. Is anyone interested in sharing? Maybe seeing if there's a house for rent or something like that nearby? Just a thought. |
