I'm putting the finishing touches on sending workout information via Twitter.

Here's my testing account with some examples of what the updates will look like. For you regular Twitterers, do the messages look ok? Any suggestions?

This will only send new workouts. Edits/updates to existing workouts don't get sent.

Looks great and totally cool.

Run update needs a pace though.

I'd also recommend formatting them to something like

just ran 2 miles in 15 mins (7:30 pace).
just biked 10 miles in 30 mins (20 mph).
just swam 1500 yards in 30 mins (2:00/100 yards).

Many twitter users have facebook updated from their twitter updates. If you format them per above, it will look right in facebook too.

I just started using twitter. I constantly edit and update my BT blog. What happens in twitter if I edit my blog? I wouldn't want too much stuff going to twitter.

Just workout data and the comments associated with the workout (up to the twitter 140 character max).  Blog activity would be too much I think.

I just successfully tested the "from Beginnertriathlete.com" signature doodad that Twitter so generously provides so this should be going live in 24-48 hours barring any major bugs.

I don't think you need the time the workout was done in the post.  Nice to have the info, but too many numbers make it hard to read.

I like the way it looks from Daily Mile, although I haven't been updating Daily Mile now that I'm on BT!  Logged today to give you an example of what that looks like: http://twitter.com/running4beer

"Ran 3.62 miles in 37 minutes and felt good. A little knee and low back pain, but good late night riverrun testing out the new headlamp."

So, it gives you the sport, the distance and time in a sentence, which makes it easier to read and sound more like an actual post.  The 'and felt good' comes from the smiley face rating you give each workout you log-- not necessary since you add comments.

I've been debating using Twitter anyway, so this helped make my decision finally.  I'll let you know if I have any feedback.

Just noticed something: the Twitter password gets stored as text in the control panel settings.  Is there anyway to change this to a password field so people can't see the password?

 Hi Carol. It's Collin! Fancy meeting you here!

Ok, BT peeps. I saw your tweet on Twitter today that said "New Training Log feature: send workout information as a Tweet!" but I can't figure out how to make it work. Can you help?

I screwed up my first post - I entered my comments in the general field and not the running field, so all it showed was that I 'ran Xmi in Xmin (pace)' without my note. Oh, well-- now I know for next time.

I still think I would prefer not to have the pace there, though.  Too many numbers makes it hard to read, it's something that you could figure out if you wanted to, and with the character cap on the posts for Twitter and Facebook it'd be good to have a little more room for your comments.  I do want to post what I did for my workout, certainly, but for social networks it's possibly more important to include that story behind the stats and provide something more personal than just the facts.

That's my 2 cents - what do others think?

I agree with running4beer that you can leave the pace/mi out. Every character counts.

Mike, I also agree with the poster who suggested a separate Tweet when just the blog is updated. Check out my twitter for an example (link in sig). I use twitterfeed, which posts "New blog post" plus the title of the post and a tinyurl every time I update my blogger blog. You seem to have a pretty good grasp of the Twitter API, so you could probably do this too.

  • Pace information has been removed.
  • Passwords are now masked.

Collin, as to sending general blog comments, I believe the other post you're referring to is by keyone and she's in favor of not including general comments in the Twitter messages.

I suppose a second checkbox labeled something like "send Blog updates too?" could be added.  If it's checked see we could check to see if the Comments section being saved is different from what was there previously.

The problem with that is, we don't store discreet blog entries for one day. It's one big block of text, so we'd have to compare the old entry with the new one and start a new Tweet at the point where they differ. Not an inexpensive operation and simple edits would be sent as Tweets.

A compromise could be just sending a message that a new blog entry is available and including the url to your training blog for that day. Alternatively, I suppose we could timestamp each entry, and send a Twitter message with the first 140 characters after the new timestamp, but now we're getting pretty complex. Does the phrase "feature creep" sound familiar?

Nevermind....I figured it out.

I can't believe I didn't see it the 10 times I looked in the control panel. Once I did, I was set up in 3 seconds!

For those that are overlooking it like I was, Go to your training log. Control Panel. Privacy Settings. You will see it at the bottom, check the box and apply.

You're doing great work here, Mike. Know that we appreciate it. The blog thing was just a thought, and I really have no need for it since I actually do my blogging separately. I'm just happy that my logs post to Twitter now, which is the only reason I was using DailyMile, requiring a duplication of my effort here.

It's still not an "official" feature yet. We'll be shouting it from the rooftops in a couple of days.

Thank you. Something else we have to do along these lines is come up with a widget or three for people to be able to display their training data in Blogger/Wordpress etc. Pretty much anything on the left column of the training log is a candidate for that.

I hope to start running regularly again and this might just be the thing to nudge me. However, when I "test" is says Nope.  I know the password is right.  What am I missing?

Can you post the actual message you're getting? It shouldn't be just "Nope". There are different ones based on what value Twitter returns or if it returns anything at all.

At the moment when testing my login, I'm getting "There was a problem contacting Twitter." which isn't that surprising as it's Twitter. Workout updates are working though, I just ran a test to confirm it.

I'll keep an eye on the login stuff. For now, if you're sure that your login information is correct, I'd add it and see if your workout info is sent.
