Alright, I'm gonna vent a bit here.  Why are companies allowed to manufacture towels that don't properly absorb moisture???
Does anybody else know what I'm talking about here?  My wife says she just likes big, fluffy towels...is anybody else crazy enough to prefer "big and fluffy" over absorbent???
Example, I wet my glasses and then proceed to dry them...but they don't dry!  They just get beaded water spread over the lenses!

Honestly, I'd prefer an absorbent dishrag to a "big, fluffy" towel that doesn't dry me!  Anybody else with me?

...and instead of start a whole new thread to vent...decorative pillows?  Seriously??  How ridiculous is the concept of laying out pillows that perform no function, have to get chucked off the bed when I'm ready to sleep, and then have to be picked up in the morning?  How inefficient is that?  Grrr.  Anybody else angry about these things????????????????????????

There should definitely be a law about towels that don't dry. They shouldn't be allowed to call them towels at all.

I like the pictures in the magazines of the pretty pillows. The reality is that they get chucked on the floor, and the dog chews a hole in the corner. Somehow toss pillows with the corners chewed off and covered in dog fur just don't make for the same decorating statement. We gave up. Beware though. There is one decorative pillow in the guest bedroom. If you come to visit I'll remove it. I'm a giver.

The problem with your towels may lie in using fabric softeners and dryer sheets.  They leave a film on the towel that can prevent absorption.

I'm neutral on the pillow issue - they are handy for throwing at the cat in the middle of the night when she is being annoying.  But mrs gearboy absolutely HATES candles.  Smelly fire hazards.

Gearboy, that would have been my 3rd rant!  Do people even wonder what "fabric softener" is?  So no, trust me, it isn't fabric softener or dryer sheets.

I swear to God, I've got a towel that's over 20 years old that I put on my rack when I'm in need of sanity.  It's a bit tattered, but the thing absorbs water!  How novel is that for a...TOWEL!!!
Mrs. ChineseDemocracy isn't crazy about it, but she knows it makes me happy in a "Linus from Charlie Brown" kind of way.

I have no decorative towels, no decorative pillows, no bed skirt sham or whatever it's called, no over-size extra area of curtains that folds into pleats.
Everything is practical, practical and practical.
I do have glass doors to my bookshelf.  It is to prevent dust from accumulating so that I don't have to dust them often.
My home is like bachelor's home.

Decorative pillows on couches, yes; beds, no.  Because of the whole throw-them-on-the-floor-and-then-put-them-back issue.

NEXT:   The decorative hand towels in the kitchen.  You're not suppose to use them as an ACTUAL towel, they just look good.  I still catch and earful now and then from the wife (or mother in law when at her house) when I dry my hands on them.

If there is a towel there it's being used at one....don't care if it's decorative.

While we're at it, what's the point of making the bed in the first place? I quote Jim Gaffigan here

"My wife is always like, 'Why don't you ever make the bed?' For the same reason I don't tie my shoes after I take them off: It doesn't make sense"

Did any of you see the Modern Family when the dad gets mad at the Columbian wife because she has so many decorative pillows on their bed?

Yes.  I laughed a lot.  We have one decorative pillow that sits on my chair in the living room, but it also doubles as a head rest, back support, etc.  I hate them.

I like fluffy, absorbent towels.  I will take absorbent over fluffy if I have to pick.

My wife wanted big fluffy towels, I wanted absorbant ones. So when we went shopping I asked one of the store employees if I could check to make sure the towels were absorbant. (Finally had to ask a manager who did not want to loose a sale) so we went to the drinking fountain, with a couple of different towels my wife liked, I spilled water from the fountain onto the floor and mopped it up. The one that worked best we got. Probably not something I would do again but now we have a large set of big fluffly absorbant towels.

As for the pillows, I cant argue with having them. I put them back on the bed at night and then when the dogs and cat sleep on the bed during the day they make the decorative pillows all furry and smelly instead of my pillow, which is nice and fresh when uncovered each night. The stack of pillows in the corner also makes a good target as a place to gently toss the cat when he tries to wake me up to feed him at 4:00 am

I just want the government to get out of my washer and dryer! I am so tired of them sticking their noses into my business. If I want to have a non-fluffy absorbent towel, that is my right!

If I encounter a decorative towel, I use it.  If it's there, it gets used.

Now what about the soap that looks like sea shells that you're not suppose to use.  Yep...I use those too.  You've been warned!

A few decorative pillows on a made up bed, with a correspondingly clean house etc. gives me internal peace...not sure I'd want to live in a sterile/solely functional bachelor pad...I kinda like a few feminine/decorative touches around the house. Don't get me started on clutter, though...

I only use one towel and it's absorbent, so I got no life experience on which to base an opinion - back to that "clutter" issue..

So does this mean you know how to use the three sea shells?

I too hate decorative towels and soaps, and I too use them if they're there (particularly if they're there AND THERE'S NO REAL TOWEL OR REAL SOAP, which is just -poor hospitality). And IMO decorative pillows are for throwing at things, not for decorating.

I also fail to understand the purpose of either dryer sheets or fabric softener. For static, I have these things called "my hands," sometimes I use them to pull apart things that are stuck together. And how friggin soft does your fabric need to be? Maybe if all your clothes are made out of burlap...

I disagree on the fabric softener rant by the few last posters. It makes such an enourmous (spelling) difference!
Eg you put stuff out on the line after watshing it, it will feel soft and bendy as opposed to stiff and crispy. Also it means you can typically get away without ironing a shirt after removing it from the tumble drier . And makes towels feel fluffier!

My sister has the decorative hand towels in the kitchen.  She also has "for show only" napkins in a special holder on the kitchen table.  She yelled at me one time for using the "special" napkins.  All I wanted was to use a napkin.  I didn't know that I had to use the cheap ones in the cabinet.  I figured if a napkin is on the table and I need to use a napkin, then I use the napkin that is on the table.

As for fabric softener/dryer sheets, I will continue to use them.  After growing up with no dryer and the freshly washed clothing hanging on lines in the basement for days to dry and becoming very stiff, I will always make sure my clothing/towels are soft!

Can anyone please explain how it's possible that my 20 year-old, 100% cotton, tattered, but absorbent towel can be so great...and my wife's big, fluffy towels (also 100% cotton) can't absorb fluid at all!???

Are there any scientists in the house???  Is it inferior cotton?  Is the pattern of the cotton threads to blame?  Is it a thread-count issue??
