Subject: Overcrowded Gym - here's a new one on me!

Let me start by saying that I hope people stick to their New Year's resolutions because if they do our population will be in fantastic physical condition.  If you've seen my logs at all you know I've been commenting on how crowded the place is in the mornings.  Here's how crowded it is at night.

Last night, for the first time this year, I took the kids to the health club for family swim night.  I pulled up and noticed the lot was extremely packed.  At this point, if you have kids, you already know there was no way I could back out of it now.  As I made my way close to the front of the lot I noticed they had  COMPLIMENTARY VALET CAR PARKING set up.  At a gym!!!  I was flabbergasted (and that's not a word I use lightly, or often).

I drove around a bit but since there was not a single space in the lot and I would have had to park about 1/4 mile away, and it was raining, and (being the uber-dad that I am) I didn't bring hats for the kids I sucked it up and used the valet service.  And yes, if you are wondering, I did tip.

It was so ridiculously packed inside.  I was really glad I wasn't there to work out because it would have been a nightmare.

On a side note, a guy inside asked me (he must have pegged me as a regular) if you are supposed to tip the car parkers.  My rule of thumb is if you are ever in a situation where you wonder if you should tip, you should tip.  If nothing else it's good for your karma.

Another side note, I don't want this to be a "bashing the newcomers" thread because I still consider myself one in many ways.  It's more a case of amazement at the difference in numbers over the last few months compared to now.

I stop going to the gym that is closer to work/home due to overcrowding. So instead, I had to drive 9-10 miles to another one. This other one is pretty crowded too. Fortunately, the clientele is a bit different. People there are a little older and not the hardcore fitness type. I never had to wait for a treadmill.

Must say though. It was pretty gross when the dude/dudette in the 'mill next to you start to pass wind while he/she runs. eww...

valet parking?  nuts.  do they have champagne coming out of the drinking fountains!?

Hangloose, you are more generous than I-- last night  when I couldn't find a treadmill I was cursing the Resoluters. Our gym is HUGE, there are easily 30 treadmills. And stepprs, elliptical several kinds of bikes, rowes, we have it all, and they were ALL full except some ole stupid Schwinn exerbike circa 1970. I really hope everyone in this country stays focused on health and fitness and meeting goals blah blah blah, but I am pissed at my club for taking all these new members, grrrr.

wow. that was an uncharacteristic and mean outburst.  I  NEED   SUNSHINE!

Yeah. Wow. Gee, Hollis, I've never seen that side of you.

FWIW...don't be hatin' the "resoluters". They're trying to make a positive change in their lifestyles, and maybe for some of them it'll stick. That's good, right? Runnergirl calls them "resolosers." I've had a similar conversation with her...don't hate the playa, hate the game (your comment about the gym taking on more members than they can handle is valid).

I don't hate the resolo-losers.  Just the ones who don't even stick with it more than a month and make my workouts miserable.  Kudos to those who really will make a lifestyle change.  Those who don't stick with it- don't even bother.  Just my opinion.

I am trying to ban my gym for awhile...no I'm not bitter they started taking the saddles off the spin bikes so we can't use them outside of class.  I'm not bitter that I can hardly get a lap line.  I'm not bitter that it takes me DOUBLE the time to workout because all the machines/dumbells are taken and I have to wait.  No I'm not bitter that I can't find an empty locker in the locker room, and have to circle the lot waiting for someone to leave to get a spot.  And lastly, I'm not bitter that most of the New Year's Resoll-Losers don't have gym ediquette. Bitter and irritated?  Hardly

I will say that I think the Family Y here has taken on too many members.  I mean it was already crowded to begin with after they remodeled, and now it's just a fire hazard!!

Yeah, but maybe by taking a bike in a Spin class or a spot in a lane, *you're* interferring with
*their* resolutions. The gym is a cimmunal place...it doesn't exist for the benefit of a single person. There's no sense in getting worked up about it being crowded, it'll only get you tense and raise your blood pressure. Go with the flow...be flexible.

Another plus to working out at the azzcrack of dawn and working out outside in rain, sleet, snow, fire and brimstone, etc.  I have noticed the pool gets a bit more crowded these days, but most of em are better swimmers than I am so probably tri folk getting ready for the season (though I doubt that is the case with some of the doggie paddlers in there)

Simple fact is that the folks who sign up and stop coming are, in essence, subsidising the memberships of those who are hardcore year-rounders. They crowd the place for a month and a half or so, then disappear. Some few of them manage to stick it out and replace the few hardcores who move on.

It's a cycle, like the seasons on the farm. Or gnat blooms.

I hear you about the gym. I live about 150 yards from a big one here. Now MY place where I live has become an alternate parking place for the gym people. It makes me crazy to see some top heavy gel head with a skin tight tank top walking out of my complex towards the gym.
I of coarse go to the YMCA that is a 10 minute drive away (the place next door has no pool, not my kind of people, and I like where my money goes when I belong to the Y)

jszat's right...get to your club when it opens at dark o'clock in the morning. You will have AT LEAST a half hour to get whatever you want done before the rest of the unwashed masses start lumbering in.
