Okay, COJ, I need some help.  I realize it's only Friday morning but I am already thinking of tonight!  I am in a wine rut!  Every time I go to the wine store, I end up coming out with the old standby white and red I always buy.  I want to try something different!  What are some of your favorite wines?  (if it matters, my favorite white is a Riesling and red is Pinot Noir)

Oh, if you like Pinot, go for Shiraz. Yum. My mom is a huge fan of Cab, especially with dark chocolate. She spent months (years?) finding the perfect wine to go with her chocolate. It was arduous, or so I'm told. For white, why not try the Pinot Grigio, a fav of mine. There's also Gewurztraminer (oh good GOD how do you spell that???), another one I go for occasionally.

Go in and ask the people there. Especially if you go to a wine shop, but even if you go to a liquor store, they should be able to help. Well worth taking some risks - you spend what, $12?, and might find something you love. Yes, you might find something you hate, so have a backup, but it's a fun process!

I was going to say Shiraz or Syrah.  Also, try different wines from different countries.  There was a coffee shop near Tampa that had a wine tasting every Friday night that featured a different region every week.

Try a Vidal Blanc for your sweeter white.  One of the best "drinking" wines I ever had was a Vidal/Riesling blend from Chateau Morrisette in VA called "Our Dog Blue".  Very easy to drink on a warm day in the sun.

Try a vouvray instead of a reisling, (its a chenin blanc grape) and try a lighter style Italian like a Montepulchiano d'abrruzo (masciarelli makes a good inexpensive one). Or try a lighter stlye Red Zinfandel from sonoma ca

ETA:  FWIW my wife and I own a wine shop and she hand sells a lot wine by getting the same amount of info you posted.  For full disclosure, the info was provided by my wife, she's really good at picking wines.

Living in Southern IL there are  a ton of local wineries.  That is what we have the most so I can't  be of much help, sorry.    I guess we tend to lean towards reds more so than whites.  A good port after dinner on a cold night is hard to beat.

I don't think the op wants to spend $45 on a bottle. Plus 2005 is sold out.

If you were a little further south or if I was further north, I'd drive up and see ya.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys.  Keep them coming!  Time to build up the wine supply again!

If you're ever diving up 91 on your way to Vermont look us up, Our Shop is in Greenfield and only 2 miles off exit 26.  It's called the Wine Rack.  Good luck, have fun exploring wines.

There's also a good tri the first Sunday in August in Greenfield too.  http://www.greenfield-triathlon.com//>

Rosenblum Vinters Curvee Syrah, California.   I get it for $10.

A full-bodied wine with incredible depth and layers of black fruit, smoke, lavender, herbes de Provence, and a silky touch of vanilla bean that adds to the beautiful finish.

This is a great food wine; equally at home with pizza and burgers as it is with steak or veal chops

i love red wine. but for some reason it makes me super emotional.. all of the times i've cried while drunk its because of red wine..

But I love its sweet nectar

And starts belting out a little Neil Diamond, then tries to impersonate UB40.

BEST value right now is Francis Ford Copolla's wine. There's a red simply called "rosso" and it's got a picture of a theater proscenium arch on the label. The cap foil is blue speckled. I love this wine. NOT the one with big, gold lettering, but it's actually 1 step lower in his line.

The Blanco OTOH isn't as remarkable. Kind of meh...

A&P and Grand Spirit both have it.

Also, the Nouveaux Beujolais should be out next week!!!

In light of my bday yesterday I decided to pick up a bottle of wine to enjoy.  BTW, Total Wine & More is like heaven and I should not be allowed in there alone.

But, I decided to try something new and I love Riesling's so I found this one:

Encyclopedia by Coppola Mosel Riesling

Awesome!  And if you hate the wine, the bottle is pretty cool looking.

What about old vine Zinfindel? Raveswood, Clos du Bois, Kunde Estates and many others standard names should be available at a reasonable price. The taste generally carries a berry flavor and some pepper and anise notes.

OOhh darn too slow...somebody already said Malbec....well anyways you have to try one!

I really like Bogle wines. Try the Merlot or Cabernet - its readonably priced at 10 - 15 a bottle (that is actually the max I spend on wine) and its is very buttery, rich, but not to overpowering.
