Buttercup 14334 | Subject: CoJ invades my real life - I'm going to hell but he'll date me anyway So I have been dabbling with dating again. And at the end of my my first conversation with a gentleman he asks me oh yeah - are you a Christian. No, I'm Buddhist (just like it says in my profile). slight pause The conversation winded all over the place (including trying to convince me why the Old and New Testament was the word of God and it was scientifically proven to be correct) but basically what came out of it is that we would be unequally yoked and the Bible says you can’t be unequally yoked. I agreed that we would be unequally yoked and basically said “so have a nice life.” Then he resumed witnessing to me (to take a charitable view of the conversation) and told me he would worry for me that I was going to hell when I died since I wasn’t saved – but that his friend who didn’t believe was now a believer so maybe I might change my mind too. I told him that if he entered into a relationship with me with the hope that I would re-convert to Christianity that he would be setting himself up for disappointment as well as being very unfair to me. He should accept me as I am, not as he wants me to be. Then he tried to create a very bizarro *ahem* logical reason why I should believe - what about the babies who die in the birth canal - are they going to hell? I said I didn't believe in hell and so, no, I didn't believe babies who die in the birth canal are going to hell. Besides which, I always understood that you didn't arrive at faith through scientific proofs or logic. And I said he should talk to his pastor about our differences and then come to a decision about what he can live with. He said he already knew what he'd say - we're unequally yoked, the Bible says so. Exactly! Soo... have a ni- Then he started telling me the ways in which the Catholic faith has it all wrong (told him I was a fallen Catholic) and I told him I didn’t have a problem with the Catholic faith – I just could not utter the Mystery of Faith in good conscience and this is why I cannot call myself a Christian (or Catholic). He seemed to think it was some strange Catholic ritual so I explained that the mystery of faith was simply this: Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again. And that I just didn’t believe and that I was not comfortable debating his faith; it felt disrespectful it’s like trying to tell someone their mother is ugly. He'd still like to take me to dinner. Out of his freaking mind! |

Champion 5345 Carlsbad, California | Subject: RE: CoJ invades my real life - I'm going to hell but he'll date me anyway Pretty interesting to see what happens when an Evangelical Christian meets up with someone who is very comfortable spiritually speaking. (But not of the same faith) So much energy is put into "Saving the Soul" of the non-believer. Effort that will ultimately go nowhere. Sounds like he is not done trying to "Save You" in spite of the fact that you don't need to be "saved" |

Pro 4292 Evanston, | Subject: RE: CoJ invades my real life - I'm going to hell but he'll date me anyway Oh no Renee, COJ is way more sensible than that guy. Though I stayed out of the "Satan" thread, I do in general notice that we discuss things with the understanding that our beliefs do differ from one anothers'. And we're definitely smarter about catching a clue. If we're looking for someone who SHARES our beliefs (as that guy thought he was?), savvy COJ'ers don't do it by walking around with a cudgel for use in the conversion of our prospective mates. I personally don't go trolling for other Christians outside of (drumroll please...) CHURCH! Yeah, we tend to "congregate" in obvious locations. Ba-dum bum.
Better luck next time, babe. |

Buttercup 14334 | Subject: RE: CoJ invades my real life - I'm going to hell but he'll date me anyway Dave! I'm trying to take the high road here! (but that was damn funny) Mary, to channel my high school self: Girl, you must be high! I'm not doing a WWBTDAMND (WWBTD about my non dating) thread! Yes, I had a profile. It lasted about a week before I deleted it. I did get one interesting response from it and that is ongoing. And that's all I have to say about that (now channelling Forest Gump). As for this prospect, I cut him loose - without insulting his mother.

Subject: RE: CoJ invades my real life - I'm going to hell but he'll date me anyway running2far - 2007-08-09 10:34 AM wow....first time I meet someone I ask about their hobbies and their friends....I think I'll stick to that approach and avoid the whole " you know you're going to hell " talk for the next time we meet..... Yeah, discussing religion on the very first date, esp. to that depth is kind of a no-no, I feel, even if it's important to you. In the dude's "defense" though, it is a generally held belief that Christians should not be "unequally yoked" - and many Christians are adamant about this (since it's in the Bible). Not all (my ex dated me before a I became a believer), but many. So for some, it's a deal-breaker. HOWEVER, it is inappropriate to proselytize to your date and tell her that she's going to burn because she doesn't believe in Jesus! It's one thing to discuss religious differences with friends, etc, but not a date who you may never see again! I get that Christians are supposed to witness and all, but I sort of feel like a date is not an appropriate setting, ya know? |

Buttercup 14334 | Subject: RE: CoJ invades my real life - I'm going to hell but he'll date me anyway I have no problem with him telling/showing me that we are incompatible during the first conversation. Why waste time? I kept agreeing that we were at an impasse since he needed me to be a Christian and I'm not Christian and have no intention of changing and that we would be unequally yoked and there was no fudging around it. It's the part where he was angling for me to CHANGE so that I would be compatible (or 'equally yoked') with his beliefs that I take issue with. If you can't accept me as I am, move on! |

Expert 1195 Shelby Twp | Subject: RE: CoJ invades my real life - I'm going to hell but he'll date me anyway Haha, now thats good stuff. i had taht happen once on a first meet. Except it was the other way in the sense that he asked me if I was a christian and believed in god. I said yes, but I wasnt really practicing for years now and I quickly changed the subject becasue I wasnt sure where he was going with this. Well it turns out he was athiest and he went on for the rest of dinner how he doesnt believe in anything and that he tried to fake it with the last girl he dated and he wont do that again for the families sake, and then starts in on me about my beliefs and my reasoning. DUDE I JUST TOLD YOU I WASNT PRACTICING, so is this really necessary. I didnt rip you a new one for being a a**hole. Wow did i eat fast after that and told him i had to be to work early the next day. |
