Last night, I helped my 16-year-old son fill out job applications (he needs gas money!) That got me to thinking about my first job. Other than babysitting, my first job was working for Pioneer Seed Company de-tassling corn. They would take a busload of teenagers out to different corn fields and we'd walk down the rows, pulling the tassle off of the top of each corn stalk. Don't ask me why, I'm a townie! I think it has something to do with cross pollenation. But even though it was hot and dirty work, it was kind of fun to work with a large crew like that.

What was your first job?

First job was as a Caddy at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, CO. Great job. Had to get there by 4:00 A.M. to get signed up, but could help people get their clubs into the club house from their car, and could make $100/ hour doing that until you went out on the course by about 10 or 11. Needless to say for a 13 year old in the early 80's I made a ton of cash.

That summer, bought a computer, waterbed, drum set, and my first good bike. I guess the computer and bike stuck since I am a programmer who does Tris.... And I'm not a bad golfer either..

I was delivering papers and washing dishes at the age of 10.  I worked on construction at the age of 15.  Worked part-time at night for two years and then started working full-time for the Canadian Government at the age of 17 .... that was over 37 years ago!!!!!  Wow, time to retire.

A part time job, working for a Finnish newspaper, wrapping them up for mailing to different parts of the US. Made $1 per hour and I thought I was J. Paul Getty! The down side of the job was I couldn't read the paper.

But I was working there the day JFK was assasinated and they stopped the presses and re-printed the first page.

My first job was a work-study job my freshman year in college. Guarding at the school pool. But that wasn't a real job, as there was absolutely no work involved...

Interesting jobs you all had.  My first job was an office clerk for the summer of grade 10.  Just finished a public exam equivalent to the British O-level and decided to go make some real money. Found it really boring and told myself to study hard so that I could go to college and get a more interesting job in the future.

Besides the typical basketball camp stuff, my first job was at a hospital. I a diener, which means someone who assists with autopsies (at a MORGUE, not the same as a MORTUARY) and cleans up the blood, organ bits, moves the bodies into coolers, sews them back up, etc. AWESOME job!! The pay was $4.25 (sucky min wage back in the day) but I would have done it for free. Man are there some stories with that!

Besides the babysitting and the filing at my dad's office, my first job was at an upscale clothing store. Unfortunately I didn't make commission, but I did get some tips.

I am now on my 4th job and I will soon be on my 5th!

Now that sounds like the best first job so far.  Mine was working as a gas jockey at a full service gas station.  Not fun at all, and hot work in the summer.

In about 1966, I was a bellboy in motel on I-75 about halfway between Detroit and Tampa.  Lots of autoworkers on vacation stopped for the night.  A lot of them were black.  The black guys were just delighted to have a white kid in the South call them, "Sir".  I made great tips.

Burger King when I was at home, and a candy shop when I was away at school. The candy shop rocked, I volunteered to clean dishes (which I hate) just because all the stuff they used to make candy was so cool -- gigantic mixer blades and huge copper kettles. Worked there at Easter one year, my hands cramped up so bad from decorating all those bunnies. I got paid in some cash and a lot of candy...to this day I don't overindulge in sweets because I got so sick so often. My dormmates loved me tho when I'd come home on a Saturday night with a paper bag full of candy.

Ahhh!  I remember those days of filling out job apps.

Besides the standard-issue babysitting, my first "real" job was at an upscale children's boutique in West Bloomfield, Mi.  This was back in the mid-80s, so I'm sure my pay was something like $4.00/hr.  I was only 15.

I also spent some time in an OB/GYN office, an ACE Hardware, Linens'n'Things, etc.

Actually, I made pretty good money as a babysitter and kept myself pretty busy with that during college.  I had a regular schedule and managed to pay my car payment and tuition and books off that -- I lived at home so rent was free.

Sounds familiar. I started delivering papers in grade 5 and kept right on delivering them (5 routes by the end of my paperboy career) until grade 11. After that my first job was in the construction trade roughing out store interiors.

Man I love the smell of gas! Although thinking of a gas jockey is conjuring up images of the gas fight in Zoolander

At 13 I delivered papers - and I did it the "old fashioned way" where you get up at 4:30 in the morning, ride your bike to the paper office, fold your own papers and ride your bike around town throwing them on peoples porches.  Not  the way they do it now, where the spoiled brat's parent drives them everywhere.

At 14 I picked apples in an orchard.  By hand. Just for the one picking season, but it just about killed me, even at that young and resilient age.

At 15 I babysat.  For 5 kids for $2 bucks an hour.  Kids who babysit now make more than I do.

On my 16th birthday (in November, in Iowa) I walked 5 miles across town to fill out an application at Tommy Tucker burger place - I got a job there at the counter for $1.10 an hour.  Sometimes people who knew me would give me rides (town of 5000 people), most of the time, I walked.

At 17 I got a better, closer to home waitressing job at Gus and Tony's Pizza place.  One of those coveted jobs that all the girls want because there were TIPS.  I worked there until I graduated from high school.  Funny side note - this July while I was on RAGBRAI we went through one of the small towns and I saw a sign for Gus and Tony's restaurant.  I thought to myself, there is NO way there could be a different Gus and Tony in Iowa - so I stopped in and sure enough, it was MY Gus! (Tony had gone back to Greece many years ago).  We had the nicest visit - it was really fun.

Other than staying home 1 year when each of my two kids were born, I've been working for 29 years!  Wow, I need to retire soon!

I pierced ears for Claire's. At 14. Would you trust a 14 year old to pierce your ears? You shouldn't!

And then I made coffee. For both Starbucks and Caribou. I was an excellent barrista

The best retail job I ever had was Barnes and Noble. I would go work there again anytime. You got paid to talk about books all day. It was awesome. And the other people who worked there were really well read, so at the very least, you had interesting people to talk to. Yeah, it was all part time work and everyone was kind of a drifter, but they enjoyed reading, and so there was always semi intelligent conversation going on. It was awesome.

Cutting weeds out of a Soybean field. $1.25 hr.  Hot, Humid, gnats, skeeters and muddy shoes.  Fields were a half mile long (back then it was forever-now I would run it and consider it a speed workout)

And since I grew up on a farm, did a lot of jobs that were really not paying jobs.  Just roll up the sleeve work.

LOL...actually it was here in Mass. Big Finnish population in the area, they had their own local newspaper. Was like living in downtown Helsinki.
