Regular 60![]() ![]() New Orleans | Subject: Kicking around this idea....any feedback?I am sitting here at work in the middle of the night doing some thinking about next year. I will give you a little background info and am looking for any feedback. I am 36, just started exercising about 2 months ago. I worked up my swim to about a mile now (55 minutes or so) which is slow but I can complete it. I recently did an 11 mile bike ride and ran 5.5 miles (1 hour 10 minutes) after my tire exploded. LOL Last weekend rode in a group ride for 50 miles in 3 hours. My running is limited but I can run 3 miles in about 30 minutes. Probably that 5.5 mile run was my max distance so far but am working on the mileage. I will be completing my 1st tri this Oct 10th Ok, now this is the thing. I live in New Orleans and am considering a HIM April 17th, 2010. I think if I start training now I will be able to complete it. The race does not have leg cutoffs but has an 8 hour after the last wave starts. I will have to see where I would fall into the time. I am hoping to get 9 hours to complete. This is the problem I am facing. I love training and have no problem putting the time in. I do work in a refinery which I work shift work. day/nights. Ummm...Feb 20 - March 20th or maybe a week more I will have to work everyday or everynight for a turnaround. This will be 12 hour shifts which I am not sure would let me train hard enough for the race during that month. I know there is a taper period but am not sure if this month lies in a critical time period. I mean I can train now till Feb 20th, some throughout the month of the turnaround and whatever needs to be done after I think I can be ready for that race but am concerned about the time I will not be able to train as hard. not sure if i should pick a later race in the year or go for this one. I wanted to try this one out since I swim and ride the same path as the HIM so it is very familiar. any feedback as if I am nuts or whatever is appreciated thanks in advance |

Expert 2180![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Boise, Idaho | Subject: RE: Kicking around this idea....any feedback?JOIN A 24 HR GYM w/pool! I work 12s, too. 7PM-7AM although I get days off (4 on-3 off). If you're single-then your time off is yours; if your married/kids/SO, then you have responibilities to them, too. Bike commute to work (or run if possible), swim after work (it's a shorter workout and you won't be so amped up you can't sleep). The key is to do alot of QUALITY work; shorter, faster paced efforts. Then do you long runs/bikes/swims whenever you can. Hang in there-It's hard to 'have a life' and do this crazy sport but it's possible. |

Master 1927![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Guilford, CT | Subject: RE: Kicking around this idea....any feedback? If you want to do it, then absolutely do it. You have time to improve. Find a good gym with a spin bike and pool that has everything you need for indoor training (get a trainer for the bike too for home). When I started in January, I had the same type of thoughts, "that I wanted to do it, but was just really unsure of myself", so I only signed up for a sprint to see how it went. Then of course I became addicted and signed up for a half shortly after. The swim will naturally get better and maybe take a lesson or two to get the basic form. As your volume gets higher and you get faster, you'll start shedding some weight and in turns into a flywheel gaining momentum. I say as long as you have the dedication and mental toughness, than you can do it and absolutely hit that goal. For what it's worth, I work alot too and sleep a little over 5 hours a day about 6 days a week. It isn't good, but it can be done. Just take a rest when you need to. You'll be fine. |

Master 4119![]() ![]() ![]() Toronto | Subject: RE: Kicking around this idea....any feedback? How about planning some shorter distance races between now and then? You can definitely work toward the HIM with dedicated training. Shorter races are a great way to know that you'll be comfortable with the swim/bike/run and transitions. I see that you're doing some OWS but it is different at a race - so if you can manage to get a sprint or something in it would probably boost your confidence alot and/or identify areas where you need to focus. The other thing that's different from training is getting the nutrition right. Make sure to read up on it and get practicing. There were lots of NOLA 70.3 race reports so you can get an idea of what other people did to keep them through the day. Best of luck!! |

Member 190![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Panama City Beach | Subject: RE: Kicking around this idea....any feedback? That's a toughie. That time period is about when you start hitting your peak mileage before the race, so your are probably going to miss some important training sessions. However, if this is the race you want to do, and this is what motivates you then go for it. It might not be the ideal way to go into your first big race, but we all don't get to do everything the 'ideal' way. P.S. If you want to wait and do a HIM a month later, you can come over to Panama City Beach and do our Gulf Coast. |
