Pro  4206   Los Angeles, CA |  Subject: Gas price per gallon threshhold pollJust curious as to what's peoples threshhold is for gas prices per gallon. I just got gas this morning and paid $2.49 for 87. It's getting pretty crazy out here in Cali. Collins, it's difficult to choose an alternative. There's a bus system, but it would take about 1.5 hrs to get to work. I bike to work a few times a week in the summers, but that's limited by my courage threshold. I have to wake up feeling brave to be ready for that commute! :-P |

I use this as an excuse to ride my bike more, specifically for riding to and from work. I live in a suburb of Sacramento that is approximately 20 miles from the office (downtown Sac). So I take advantage of my distance from work by commuting by bike on the American River Trail. Great way to get some mileage in. Now if it would only stop raining! But when it rains, like today, I take light rail. A nice short 2-mile run in the rain beats driving, IMO. Anything that gets me away from driving my Jeep in an urban setting I consider a good thing. |

Veteran 152 Central Connecticut | Subject: RE: Gas price per gallon threshhold poll I was looking into getting one of the Turbo Diesel VW's (either the Bug, Jetta, or Golf). Close to 50 MPG Highway. But there is a 3.5 hour gap for trains when I want to commute, so I would either get to work at 6AM (I would have to be up at 4:30am just to catch that train), or be at work at close to 9AM which is unaccaptable. |

Well, unless I lived in a big city with good mass transportation, but that's not likely to happen anytime soon! However, there are a lot of ways to scale back one's driving without throwing out the car entirely. So I don't know what my vote is... When I'm in the market for a car again, I'll definitely be looking hard at hybrids and hopefully other alternative fuels will be more developed by then. |

The thing that annoys me most is that the price up here does not make sense - cost of oil goes up - so does the gas by up to eight cents a litre. Cost of oil goes down - gas stays the same or may drop a cent or two. In January we were paying .749/litre - that's more than a 20% increase in a quarter. It's also rather off putting that we ship gas refined in Nova Scotia to Prince Edward Island where it sells for less. We also ship it to Maine and it sells for less there as well. And, to top it all off, I just read the other day that of the tax that we pay on gas that is supposed to go towards maintaining roads - only about 8% is reinvested - the worst in the G8! The US is in second last with something like 40%! Grrr! Shane Can't wait until I live close enough to work to bike/run on a regular basis - right now the round trip is 150km. |

Taxes on gas, cigarettes, and liquor are much higher in Canada than the US, as is true for most of the world. This does not seem to have a significant effect on consumption. I suspect that the threshold, if it exists, is much higher. |

Our city is so isolated, the closest we are to anything is either Minneapolis or Winnipeg, and both are 7 to 7-1/2 hr drive. But around town I bike when I can (Not in winter) or walk. There are a few people that carpool and use alternative means but almost every car you see has a single (1) person in it. We love our freedom and cars are a part of that. We will pay whatever we have to in an effort to maintain that freedom of movement. I'll pay what I have to, to fill up my gas guzzling truck. I don't like it, but I do carpool and will hopefully be able to ride to work 1 - 2 times a week soon (if I can find a good route). Unless we have a load of something to move or pickup, the truck stays parked alot more than it used to. |

Plus 50 bucks a month for parking. At a 27 mile commute...its about 210 bucks a month to sit in traffic. So I traded in my parking for a free bus pass..and am mixing up riding to the park and ride then riding the bike home...or other alternatives...I can get some good rides in, and help save money and the environment. Golly...I'm such a good person!!!!! (today is my first day) |

(its been around the dollar mark for the last couple of months) If someone else can do the maths or tell me the conversions. I ride my bike to work when I can. But our public transport system isn't teh best here so driving is pretty much the only option most of the time. |

I realize many people by an SUV as a status symbol; particularly those Hummer H2s with street tires, what is up with that? But people buy what people want. If people want to drive a genormous SUV, let them. As for me, I am happy riding my bike to work and driving my Jeep on the weekends to save on gas. And I get a workout too! |

But our public transport system isn't teh best here so driving is pretty much the only option most of the time. $0.90 - $1.10 = $0.69 - $0.85 U.S. dollars / litre 1 litre = 0.264 gallons (U.S. liquid) 1 / 0.264 = 3.79 litres per gallon 3.79 x $0.69 - $0.85 = $2.61 - $3.22 U.S. dollars per gallon I think that is correct. It is still early here, and Friday. That price is little higher than what I have seen here in Sacramento with the cheapest being $2.27 per gallon. |

I drive a 1998 Honda Civic which gets 32 MPG. My commute is 28 miles one way. Weekly expense for gas is approx $18.00 My threshold would be double that amount. I use to have a Yamaha XT350. It got 40-45 miles per gallon, so that purchase could happen again... |
